Freshman walk-on Case Robinson to Freshman WR Kendrick King. Fans need to learn King's name and learn it fast...Robinson is a name to stow away but could make some noise in a couple years...bright future at QB with him and fellow Freshman Adam Morse.

Re: 2016 Lamar Football Recruiting Board, 6-11-2016

Case Robinson might be a steal. At 6' 2, a little better than 200 lbs, runs in the 4.6 range, and just makes plays. I don't know where but I think that he will be on the field a lot next year.

Who predicted this? Anyone, anyone, Bueller. I should get a 1-800 number and start a psychic hotline.

Cards Close Week With Scrimmage

The thunderstorms avoided Beaumont long enough for the Lamar University football team to complete its second scrimmage of preseason camp Sunday evening at Provost Umphrey Stadium. It was the final workout for the team before starting classes Monday morning.

"Tonight wasn't good enough in my opinion," said LU head coach Ray Woodard. "I wanted us to look a little sharper. We are really playing hard and getting after it, and it's not easy for both sides to look good at the same time when you're playing against yourself. I was a little disappointed we didn't put a few more of these scoring opportunities in the end zone for touchdowns. On the other side, I'm very proud of our defense for holding them out."

The LU offense found the end zone twice during the scrimmage but both scores came late. Big Red's defense was making it tough on the offense almost from the start. The defense picked off senior Carson Earp's second pass of the scrimmage. The second team defense came onto the field and took advantage of a high snap. The ball got away from transfer Andrew Allen which was recovered in the end zone for six points.

Youthful Receiving Corps Take Center Stage

Mark Roberts, Reggie Begelton, Devonn Brown and Jordan Edwards are just some of the names that Lamar University football fans have grown accustomed to in the short time that Big Red has returned to the football field. During the first six years of the program's restart, the Cardinals have produced several all-conference players, an All-American and had one rewrite the school record books in only two years – just to have a teammate erase those records the following season.

It is those big names at the position the Cardinals are missing this season, and that seems to have some concerned about the Cards in 2016. Instead of being a reason of concern it could be a cause for excitement. Prior to Begelton becoming the school's all-time leading receiver, he entered his sophomore season with little fanfare having caught a total of 21 passes for 172 yards. It's doubtful that anyone looked at Begelton in 2012 and thought he would go on to become the school's benchmark of success for receivers.

Seniors Return to Lead Strengthened D-Line

For most the thought of putting on a helmet and pads and working out in the heat and humidity of Southeast Texas during August is something to avoid at all costs. Fortunately for Lamar University football fans, Big Red's defensive linemen view things a little differently. The reason for their excitement has more to do with the fact that during spring camp LU's defensive front was left in a unique situation.

The Cardinals opened spring believing that former Oklahoma head coach John Blake would be the defensive line coach. Shortly after spring ball got underway Blake left the Golden Triangle to take on a similar position in the NFL which left LU's line not only learning a new scheme under a new defensive coordinator, but also without a position coach.

"Spring camp was unique for the defensive line because we didn't have a coach," said senior Omar Tebo. "It was tough at the beginning because you didn't have that coach to just work with you, and get you where you need to be. We all felt like the other coaches were doing a great job helping where they could but they had their responsibilities to their athletes as well. It was a great feeling when Coach (Eric) Roark got here."

Unconventional method yields results for Lamar linebackers coach

The blue painter's tape on the Lamar linebackers' helmets isn't a fashion statement.

It clashes with the red and white of the Cardinals' helmets, but linebackers coach Ben Beasley doesn't care.

Beasley introduced the tape at the start of fall camp as a way to track where linebackers are looking on plays while he reviews video of practice sessions.

"Where linebackers' eyes are looking is very important," Beasley said. "The tape keeps our guys accountable and lets them learn from their mistakes."

Beasley, in his first year as linebackers coach after spending the past two seasons over the defensive backs, leads an important unit in first-year defensive coordinator Trey Haverty's 4-2-5 defense.

If I recall correctly, this actually started last season when Coach Criner put the red metallic stripes used on the black helments on the white ones...the players and coaches liked the look enough to permanently add the stipe to all of the white helments. Don't expect so see the Cards run out Sept. 3rd with painters tape on their helments though lol.

Secondary Has Strong Mix of Talent and Youth

It has been noted how young the Lamar University receivers will be in 2016, but the players they face in the secondary every day in practice would be at the exact opposite end of the spectrum. The LU secondary returns names like seniors Xavier Bethany and Brendan Langley and sophomores Rodney Randle and Davon Jernigan which has some believing the Cardinals' secondary could be one of the best in Southland Conference.

Three of the four previously listed names are returning starters, while the fourth – Jernigan – played in eight games last season. Bethany has been one of the league's top safeties each of the past two seasons and has been recognized on the postseason all-conference squads during that stretch. Both Randle and Langley are preseason All-SLC picks (Randle was named as a return specialist), while Jernigan was one of the top recruits from the 2015 signing class.

While the Cards return some key players in the secondary, they all enter preseason camp looking to earn a starting role.

"We have to build depth," said first-year defensive coordinator Trey Haverty. "We've been telling the defense that you win championships with twos and threes because things are going to happen throughout the year. I don't know if we're there yet, but we've got to continue to fight and get better. For these young guys they will get in the game if we trust them, and that trust is earned in practice."

Lamar Kicker Ball Regains His Form

The final seconds of a close football game is usually the favorite time of a placekicker. It’s his opportunity to win.

For Alex Ball, it was his chance to save Lamar’s homecoming from being spoiled.

“It’s pressure. It’s pressure as always,” the psychology major said. “It just so happened it’s the game-winning field goal. Everything’s playing in my mind, the rain, the wind. Am I warmed up? Am I confident in my abilities?”

His 23-yard field goal attempt went right into the wind on a drizzly Saturday night in November and pushed wide right. Nicholls State won 30-28.

Ball was 0 for 2 that game after going into the homecoming contest 10 for 11. He also missed from 46 yards out at the end of the first half.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t happen for me,” Ball said. “It has happened for me. In this case, it didn’t.”

Yes, it has happened for Ball. In 2013, his redshirt sophomore year, the Californian booted a 41-yard game winner against Stephen F. Austin as time expired. He was 7 for that season, but did not kick a field goal the next year because of injuries.

Lamar Wide Receivers Vie For Top Spot

Lamar football has dealt with issues of inconsistency since the program returned, but the wide receiver position has never been one of them.

In fact, Lamar has been a school where receivers thrive as a focal point of the offense.

First it was J.J. Hayes, then Mark Roberts and most recently Reggie Begelton, the school's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards.

However, Lamar enters this season without an obvious top receiver.

Senior Michael Handy is Lamar's leading returning receiver with 181 receiving yards last season, but he will miss the first five games because of a suspension.

Past Handy, redshirt sophomore Martell Hawthrone is the only receiver to have a catch at Lamar.

Lamar's history with receivers brings promise that a receiver - or two - will step up and take the top role.

We let five Lamar receivers - Hawthorne, Marcus Daggs, Zae Giles, Trenton Swinton and DeWan Thompson - make their case for why they can be the school's next top receiver.
