Good news is LU really has no where to go but up. This may be an interesting year for LU as I would expect considerable improvement over last years team. While by past performance SFA is still at the top I think the loss of Walkup will hurt them quite a bit unless they have gotten a good recruit to replace him. I think LU has the potential to beat any of the other SLC schools including SFA. We'll see how this year plays out and whether Tic remains the coach after this year. Edited by geezer

I provided input to Sagarin's model decades ago and rankings before games are played are misleading. It probably applies to Massey as well.Sam and Corpus are probably have a chance to beat out SFA and I believe some of the others are better and deeper this year including Lamar. The Cards also do not have as bad a conference schedule as last year so I see them finishing much better than last year.Weisbrod will be fun to watch and he will create good shots for our perimeter shooters.

It appears SFA is in a slight decline since losing their coach to Oklahoma State. LU keeps moving on up but not in the top group yet.

Whether LU can make the jump to the next tier of the SLC in the rankings will be decided over the next week. First LU must win at Idaho St who is ranked lower than Lamar and then how well they compete at San Francisco and DePaul will determine where they sit going into conference as the other five games are back to teams they should beat easily, even though UTRGV (Pan American) is on the road.

Lamar started out the year ranked at 332 in the Massey Composite, climbed to as high as 232 and now have slid back to 308 as of Sunday Dec 18th ranking. The current ranking is probably closer to reality than the 232 was. However tonight the Cards play Liberty who are currently ranked at 271, so why then should Lamar be slightly favored to win this game?

As of the Dec 25th rankings Lamar is 11th of the 13 SLC teams at 285 with Sam Houston the highest at 178. Only McNeese and Central Arkansas are ranked lower. Still a long way to go for the Cards.
