Dangerous Week Ahead for Cardinal Basketball

This coming week is a crucial week for the men as they are currently tied with SFA for fourth place in the conference. The Cards are sitting at 4-3 with losses to the top two teams and the last place team. The conference is very much an anybody can beat anybody on any night whether it is at home or away, although the weaker teams are more likely to beat a stronger team at home. The Cards are home to AMCC on Wednesday in a tv broadcast game and follow that with a game against Northwestern St on Saturday. Both of these opponents are currently at or near the bottom of the conference standings but have played the leaders to relatively close games. If the Cards think that these two games are ones that they should win and don't come prepared to really play hard then both of these games could easily end up as losses. I know that is true for most every game but when I look at what the Cards have done year to date both in the non-conference and conference it seems like the games as a fan I thought Lamar had a good chance of winning turned out to be losses. I believe the Cards have improved as the season has progressed but so have the opponents and this coming week Lamar is playing two teams who were really expected to have a better record at this stage of the season than they have. It seems like quite often Lamar is able to contain the other teams expected top performer but allows someone else to have a near career game or a team that is very beatable to stay in the game until the Cards fail to execute down the stretch. I'm hoping for good fan support this week and for the team to come out focused and take control of games.

Have business in Houston tomorrow so I was actually able to attend this game. Pretty much saw what I expected. Lamar plays hard, but still doesn't do the fundamentals well. Double team their big man 25 feet from the basket and leave the three point shooter wide open on the other side of the court. As Coach said, can't make free throws at HOME, there might be some excuse on the road. Weisbrod rarely kicks the ball back out when he receives it in the post. The guards take too many three point shots stepping back or to the side as opposed to stepping into the shot. Guards aren't ready to shoot when they receive the ball so the defense has time to put a hand in their face. Lamar didn't deserve to win this game, but still should have as with less than 30 seconds to play Lamar misses the second of two free throws which would have given LU a one point lead. There are a lot of excuses for poor free throw shooting but most of it revolves around lack of concentration. When players get tired it's the mental part that goes first. Here's hoping for a better performance on Saturday. AMCC really is one of the better teams in the conference even if the record doesn't show it at this point.

Does anyone have something positive to say about the team? They are much better than last year, and every starter returns for next season.

Yes, they are playing much better than I expected. Have played hard in most games, but as Price said after the game there was a lack of hustle/intensity in the second half and free throw shooting was atrocious as a team. Thomas, TX-A&M CC big man, killed us inside & outside.

Definition of Failure: "When your best is not good enough". Harsh but true.

On an individual basis the player play hard. Yes the team is better than last years and yes none of the starters are seniors. Unfortunately that right now that is the bulk of the positives after a loss like last night. To be honest I have more of an issue with the coaching performance than I do with the players. Until I moved out of state I was a faithful in the seat fan for Lamar for most of the past twenty years. I have watched them under one unsuccessful coach after another over that time period and I still made every home game that I could and usually made it to at least one road game. I will admit to having pretty high standards when defining success which to me in the SLC should be playing no more than two non-D1 schools a year and winning twenty games. Ask yourself this, when was the last time a Lamar coach in any sport left for a better job. To my knowledge it was the golf coach about eight years ago maybe longer. I guess you could say Gilligan went to retirement on his terms, but I don't think you can qualify the baseball program as a success over the past multiple years either. If you base success on a comparison to recent history, this years team is doing better than last years. Questions for the coaches, have you ever thought about playing Nzeakor, Weisbrod and Chatman together? Why didn't Albright get any playing time until the last minute of the game last night? Why are we out sized in virtually every game we play? At this point in the conference season most teams have figured out how to control Weisbrod, do you as coaches have any adjustments that will counter what the opponents have done? I'm a frustrated fan and I'm tired of seeing performances like Wednesdays. Ten games left in the regular season and LU needs to win eight of them to get to twenty. Probably need six wins to get to the SLC Tourney, anything less than making the SLC Tourney can't really be seen as an improvement over last year in my opinion.

Cards finish the week on a positive note, winning by 21 over Northwestern St. As stated earlier this years team and performance to date is better than last years but is it where it should be given the history of the program. My opinion of the progress is that it is not where I think it should be if Lamar is to move to the success level that I believe Lamar fans should expect. My opinion is the quality of Lamar's non-conference opponents must be better and Lamar needs to maintain or improve the non-conference record against better opponents. In conference Lamar needs to win the more meaningful games (at minimum split with the games with the top three conference finishers) and all conference home games. Need to see crowd size begin to climb significantly. The lower level of the Montagne should be full every home game. Student sections should be full. I hope Price and staff will deliver but again if you look back at his records at his previous stops I believe you would have to agree his coaching and recruiting has to have improved over what it was at McNeese. With a full week to get ready McNeese at home a win next Saturday should be expected not hoped for.
