KABrother88
Tonight the Lamar Cardinal baseball team will open up the 2017 season Milwaukee as part of the annual Cardinal Classic. This game also marks the beginning of the Will Davis era. This years Cards should have an explosive offense having 5 of the 9 expected regulars named to either 1st or 2nd team preseason All-SLC. This seasons team will be headlined by Sr. OF Ried Russell who lead the SLC and tied the school record with 18 HRs last year on his way to SLC Hitter Of The Year. He also finished 3rd in the TD Ameritrade Home Run Derby last summer against some of the top power hitters in the college game. Other All-SLC selections were Sr. C Bryndan Arredondo (1st), Sr. INF Trey Silvers (1st), Sr. OF Cutter McDowell (2nd) & So. INF/C Robin Adames. While the offense returns a good portion of last years key contributors, the pitching staff is a complete other story. There are only 2 pitchers returning who logged more than 12 innings last year (Jimmy Johnson and Brett Brown) and of their combined 38 apparences only 2 came as starts. First game of the Cardinal Classic was set to start at 2:00 today between Milwaukee and Illinois but has been delayed due to weather. KABrother88
According to the Beaumont Enterprise, transfers Tanner Driskell and Carson Lance will be the Friday and Saturday starters heading into the season. Also says Jimmy Johnson was initially going to transition from the bullpen to starting rotation this year but Coach Davis sees more value in him as the closer than a starter. http://m.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/lamar/article/Transfers-Tanner-Driskill-Carson-Lance-open-10940379.php
KABrother88
Cards get the shutout with a 6-0 win in the opener. Tanner Driskill went 6-2/3 innings allowing only 4 hits while striking out 4 and walking none. Offensively there were a lot of contributors as the team had 5 different players to knock in a run. Next game scheduled at 4:
