Guest CardinalClaw Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Also how about Peydon McVey? He's a true freshmen having a big impact for the Cardinals. Really good game for McVey, he could be a great player for us. Quote

Guest CardAmbassador Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Remember we could have scored in those last few minutes if we werent burning the clock. Woodard even skipped out on a field goal. Quote

After this big win today I bet the rest of the tickets go fast. Quote
lu cards Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 awesome game by the cardinals.they really steppd up in the 2nd half and took this game over.ill only mention one negative and thats the special teams.weve got to get this fixed.cant let teams start drives at mid field.very proud of the card fan tonight. Quote
05BigRed Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 fantastic 2nd half showing for the cards...offense looked really good...bevil definately showed why he is the starter...just has to keep it up unlike last year...he seems to be making much better decisions with his passing...the 1 INT was kind of a botched play/miscommunication with reciever...defense played great at times but gave up several big plays...the definately improved in the 2nd half...they just have to be more consistent to keep winning ball games...with offense scoring that many points, defense has got to step up to give us chances to win in the future... special teams are really killing us...our punts with the exception of 1 were not that great...we give up WAY to much yardage on kick offs...you can definately tell the team is improving and firing on more cylinders...lets hope they can clean up a few things and bring home another win next weekend...great way to start off conference play! Guest bigred360 Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Where are those Kat fans who said they couldn't decide who to take? I've given SHSU, now let's hear it for the Cardinals. Quote
Guest bigredfan2 Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 I like Coach....was apprehensive of the 2nd half. But we took care of business and took it to them. I was pleasantly surprised withe the young receiver. A very weak point with this team is the special teams. There were too many short kicks, but when they were not they let the runner get the yardage anyway. We had a extra point blocked, which I had a sick feeling it was, because a punt of ours earlier was almost blocked by TWO that got in too easy. In all a great win and the game next week should be a great game too. Quote
BigRedTrack Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Special teams needs major work this week. That said, I loved the running game. Especially those gainers around the left side. The big guys on that side dominated their defensive line - Campbell is a horse and a force to reckon with. Great win Cards! Quote
Bearkat 41 Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 I didn't weigh in on pregame predictions, but I was not at all surprised by an LU win today. The Cards are better than they were last year. A year of experience goes a long way. A running game goes a long way. As for SLU, I don't know anything about them this year. I like their coach as a person bt my gut tells be he won't be there after this season. Lamar went on the road against an opponent, who in my opinion they should beat, and they got it done. Continuing to get better from week to week is what every program wants to do and fans should be excited about the win. Congrats on the first SLC victory! Quote
geezer Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 No doubt kick off coverage is our number 1 weakness, I would say the pooch kicks were an attempt to control their returns by not letting the ball get to their primary returners. Didn't sound like it worked out very good though. Still have a ways to go with defensive secondary but there is definate improvement there. Quote
Guest bigred360 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I totally agree about the secondary but they have 3 studs at the WR position including the transfer from UT. Quote
Bruce Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Some good-tasting crow last night :). I was not optimistic coming into this game, despite our win in Hammond last year. The unimpressive performance against Incarnate Word just scared the living bejeezus out of me in terms of what a real offense was going to do against our defense. I'm very happy with the win, and in particular I hope those who tuned in from home who haven't been to a game at P-U Stadium will decide to come out to a game now. Yesterday's game was certainly an entertaining one. The defense obviously is still not a strong point of the team--if we had not gotten those two turnovers down by our goal line, the game's quite a bit different. But the fact is that they still came up with a bunch of turnovers and made that huge stop on 4th down that turned the game, despite allowing a lot of yardage. And, to be fair, those receivers the Lions had were quality players. However, the offense was terrific--getting Jackson back made an enormous difference, Venson did a solid job, McVey was a very pleasant surprise, and they way we basically imposed our will on them in the 4th quarter was a joy to behold. All that having been said, what in God's green earth is going on with the special teams, especially on kickoffs? This game probably ends up very lopsided in our favor if we didn't insist on giving them the ball at midfield every possession. We played well enough yesterday to spot SE Louisiana 30 yards every possession. We're not good enough to be spotting 30 yards a possession to Northwestern and SFA, much less McNeese or Sam. Please, Coach, fix this. I don't know if Sanchez can do a better job on kickoffs, but can he at least get the ball down the field further? I mean, at this point, have some open tryouts looking for a walk-on a la Texas Tech a few years ago, with the only prerequisite being that you can kick the damn football to the goal line. Stout's been fine when we ask him to kick a FG (the extra point miss yesterday wasn't his fault, IMHO), but he's just not good at kickoffs. This *will* cost us a Southland win this year if we don't improve. Quote
Guest CardinalClaw Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Yeah Woodard has to get the special teams problems fix, it is really sad that we can't kick it deep. Quote
Guest LU4LIFE Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I don't think its Stout not being able to kick it further down the field IMO the coach's don't feel the coverage can make it down the field fast enough to make the tackle. Quote

Wow. I admit I didn't consider that possibility. While I hate putting more starters out there on STs given our lack of depth, I'm not sure what other choice we have (and I'm not sure even that would work). I just think we've got to try something to keep teams from taking possession near midfield every possession. Quote

I agree 100% we have to do something to fix the ST we are not going to win games against good team giving them the ball near mid field every kickoff. I also agree with you that I wouldn't like to see more starters out there but I guess you got to do what you got to do to get the job done. Quote
Guest CardinalClaw Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Maybe we should try kicking deep line drives that bounce down field, those are tough to field an could buy our guys some time to get down field an make a tackle. Quote
Guest bigred360 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Agree I'd rather that than a dang pouch kick that is caught about the 35 before the runner starts up field. We had this same problem last year. Is it the special teams coach? I don't know. Quote
geezer Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Lack of depth hurts, especially if you don't use starters for special teams. I know around here it is uncommon even in high schools for starters to play on kick offs or go both offense and defense but it used to be normal at small schools for a starter to play the entire game and never come off the field at a small school so it can be done. Quote
Austin Card Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Offensive Line is making the difference, they seem to be melding now after a couple of games together and are starting to live up to the hype. We are finally allowed to run the ball which sets up everything. The running backs had some really nice holes to run through Saturday and looked great! Bevil seems to have matured. He appeared to be in charge, like a good QB has to be. I was really happy to see him staying in the pocket and throwing the ball away when he had no receiver. The defense looked great at times but allowed a couple of untouched runs. We have got to do something about special teams, this is going to be the difference between us making a playoff run or being a .500 team this year. You cannot give a good team half the field to play on and expect to win very often. Hopefully they get it fixed this week. All and all a great game. I was happy to get the win especially with the low expectations after the last three games. A couple of small tweaks and we may have a really good team to cheer for. I really believe that they are going to surprise a lot of people this year. Expectations are high again. PECK EM!! Quote
LU1991 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I did not give a pregame prediction since my expectations were not in the win column. I'm glad they proved me wrong and look forward to this Saturdays contest but I agree with the other posts; we have to do something with special teams if we are going to continue to win. GO LU!!!!
