Exactly. Not usual for college teams to be on the field for the anthem. NFL only started doing it 7-8 years as part of a marketing deal.

Ok, I'm definitely waffling. I thought he decided to do it because of the protesting.

Between Lamar always sucking at football and NFL players taking the knee, I'm pretty much done with football at all levels.

I've dumped the NFL last year. Was done with LU too but from what others are saying I think I misunderstood why they weren't out for the anthem.

Schulz says to “trust the process”. I am not sure what that means. I don’t see anything that looks promising. No quick strike offense. No gassing the opponents defense. We can’t run the ball. We can’t throw. We can’t catch. We aren’t showing any promise with our offense. I’m not seeing anything that tells me in another year or two and we are going to be good. Our defense, well the obvious last night was no outside containment. Third down, hand off to number 30 and watch him run outside for at least 10 yards before he is even addressed by the defense. Again, nothing on defense that says when these guys are juniors or seniors our defense is going to be good. Nichols did whatever they wanted on offense and laughed at us while they did it. I’ll bet that at least a couple times, a Nichols RB got the ball and said to himself...Hey where did everybody go as he rounded the corner.

Defensive problems started a few years ago. Then Woodard brilliantly hired a new defensive coordinator from.....Texas Tech....LOL. Let's go get a defensive coach from a school who historically has the worst defense in FBS. Unfortunately Schulz likes the same gimmick scheme. Isn't it the 3-3-5 or something? Since we are undersized to start with, and three w in the 3-3 part of this scheme...well I don't think there's a chance in hell we will stop the run. And the offense...it makes me want to vomit! I'm with you, what exactly is the process???!!?!

It looked to me like the containment is player execution related as opposed to the defensive scheme. I saw the LB on the right side where it seemed several big runs happened, his first move was to the middle when he should be holding the edge and forcing the play back to the middle. Also I don't believe the ends are big enough and maybe not talented enough. I think there are more cases of players not executing than it is the scheme. With five DBs I would expect it to be rare that a WR wood get past all the defenders.

The worst team I've ever seen at Lamar...from coaching to the twirlers.

And BORING...zzzzzzzz:flush:

Finally, said out loud what I'd been thinking--"We fired Woodard for THIS!"

I'm not sure if they're making promises they shouldn't be keeping to these FBS transfers or what but the QB play is greatly lacking. They made up their mind quick on White and rightly so. Not sure what's taking so long at QB unless they're dead set on redshirting Morse. At least he can chunk it and get it out of there timely. Too much holding the ball and too much last second tuck it and run from them both. They have playmakers on offense but just can't get it to them besides handoffs, or 3 yard passes. At this point no team in conference will even worry about defending the pass. Our defense has no size compared to the rest of the conference. They had 2 big Juco kids coming that obviously didn't qualify. They desperately need to get a win at Incarnate Word, or this team will hit rock bottom. They're close now

In Spring training it sounded like the kid Schulz chose to play at QB was playing the worst of the 3. And maybe it is what you said, made some promises. I can't remember if it was NWSU or SE La where I decided that he wasn't the answer. He checked down on a couple of plays where we had open receivers further down field, he missed too many throws, and he didn't seem like he could get a feel/had the right instincts in the pocket. Sometimes it looked like he'd bail on a play way too soon, and on other plays he would hold the ball too long. He seems to be a very good athlete but I'm not sure he's fast enough for wide receiver...move him to running back or maybe slot.

However, as bad as our defense is I almost hope they redshirt morse and dallas. Like you said, we have no size, we cannot stop the run. If you can't stop the run you are pretty much doomed...only hope is turnovers. Also, Morse needs to get in better shape, imho. He's looking more like a linebacker than a QB, and if he keeps it up, he'll end up being an offensive lineman.

What confuses me is Coach came to Lamar knowing he wanted a dual threat QB( haven't seen Dual yet) why wasn't Morse told this in Camp. Morse won the Job last year. Bringing in the new kid is fine, how does he end up behind Allen?? I don't know what was promised to the new QB, but it's a shame how horrible the offense is performing. The Defense isn't much better, but the constant 3 & out is hurting their effectiveness. Special Teams needs to step up & Defense must find ways to score until the offensive gets it together. Our DB's are Toast. SMH

Yep, they have to help each other. 3 and outs are killers. I've always wondered how one-sided teams are able to hold it together (ok, we haven't really been one sided); but if you finally get a stop and then the offense goes 3 and out...has to do something to you mentally. Hopefully the kids somehow keep their attitude good and keep battling. There's a lot of things that look baffling...I don't know if it's poor execution or poor schemes (on defense). Offense, damn, where's the no doze.... Most teams either use the run to set up the pass or the pass to set up the run. I don't know that we are good enough at either to set the other up (if that makes any sense).

It's funny you say that about defense scoring; I recall, i think, some Baltimore teams and maybe Seahawks defenses? basically saying "ok, no problem, we'll score". And special teams is going to have to help out.

I hear ya brother, my entire Family is All In. We must keep in mind the kids & staff don't take the field to practice or on game day to Lose. I truly believe there is a game on the schedule they think they can win. I'm concerned because our Dual QB has only proved to be one sided, our biggest plays are gimmicks( spells trouble if you must resort to that) and we continue to give carries to a WR, he gets as many carries as some of our RB's. I'm a Basketball guy; if my Center has more 3pt attempts than my guards, there's a problem. Fix this Horrible play calling please. SMH

I usually never chime in on message boards, but I've covered Lamar a lot this season, beginning in December during the announcement of Schultz.

Regardings the Nicholls game, they are really good. Don't let the Sam score from last week fool you. Nicholls should have beaten A&M. LU dropped a pick 6 when down 14-0, Colbert had a bad game, and defense just cant tackle especially Nicholls converting on 3rd & long multiple times. Dropped balls by WRs.

Should have beaten Northwestern St, last week had PLENTY of opportunities to score TDs and just ran into a juggernaut this week with Nicholls.

There isn't a ton of EXPERIENCED talent on either side of the ball.

Nicholls was the same way as the Woodard door-matted Lamar FB. Coach Rebowe took over Nicholls in 2014 and has built them into a respectable program.

To see practices from this year last year, off-season from this year last year, you would be amazed what these kids have to do and how much more professional this program is.

I'm not defending Schultz, be he isn't a miracle worker especially with what he inherited in late December. This program, believe it or not, was in shambles. Some of these kids spent minutes, not days or hours in the weight room.

Yes, I agree. They need to find a way to beat UIW.

As far as the protest goes? What protest? Not many colleges are on the field during the Anthem. Actually, NFL needs to adopt what CFB does and stay inside.

Remember when Woodard brought them out last year at Abilene Christian? 3-4 players took a knee during the Anthem and the following week, Lamar stayed in the dressing room.

That questioned should have never been even asked.

I read an article the other day but can’t remember where...I think it was the Beaumont Enterprise write up on TE Duncan McVey needing to stop playing due to concussions but in the article Schultz mentioned that a way the team has worked to help prevent concussions was to limit tackling in practice. I can’t help but speculate if that is a major issue with game execution.

Watching Lamar defense tackle looks like they have never been taught to wrap up. Too many of the attempted tackles are just players launching themselves trying to knock the defender off balance hoping they fall over as opposed to wrapping up and taking them to the ground. A college player shouldn't have to be taught this, they should have learned to tackle in youth football, junior or senior high school. I know I was. I see players imitating what NFL players get away with at times and frankly most college players aren't good enough to get away with that kind of tackle. Same thing happens with basketball as too many players appear to be imitating NBA super stars rather than learning good fundamentals. I think a lot of concussion injuries could be avoided if they would eliminate the targeting rule as called today and simply implement a personal foul penalty anytime a defender leaves his feet when hitting a player other than when trying to try to dive to catch someone from behind.

Well, for starters I appreciate your optimism and hope that Schultz works out. However I think Rebowes first year was in 2015, they won 3 games after going 0 fer in 2014. So there was immediate improvement. Not to mention, they beat us his first year and I believe they were very competitive in every game with maybe the exception being mcneese which they lost 37-7. I see no improvement on this team vs last year, they actually look worse.

The things that are so discouraging are the awful play on offense, the play calling, and the scheme. It looks like we can't run or pass and it looks like we continue to do the same unsuccessful stuff. Like previously mentioned, almost our only successful plays are trick plays. We have no mid/deep passing game. We rarely throw to the tight ends, etc

On defense we run the same scheme we did the last two years. I don't see how you can be successful vs the run with that scheme. I haven't looked, and I probably should, but are there any teams in the country that run that and have successful defenses?

As for the locker room/anthem, that was my bad. I was used to our team being on the field for the anthem under Woodard. I don't recall Woodard ever leaving the team in. They had 2-4 players pulling some crap during the anthem for 2 or 3 games and then it stopped (from what I recall). I THOUGHT Schulz had them out there the first couple of games and then changed. Again, that was my mistake. I now realize that most all college teams don't come out and never have. (And it's a shame that these NFL athletes can't go on the field and show a little respect/appreciation for 2 or 3 minutes but they are me me me, look at me personalities so ur probably right. You have to treat them like little kids and leave them in their room since they don't know how to act; so just stay in the locker room.)

I hope something changes for the better...and sooner rather than later.

The constant lateral runs and passes aren't fooling anyone. Put Allen in if they're gonna redshirt Morse.. At least he has a halfway good arm and get the ball down the field. It's like the coaches don't know the opposing teams watch our film.

Ditto. And I guess Dallas is getting redshirted? Did anyone see him play in high school? What kind of arm does he have?

It would take a rash of injuries similar to last year for Dallas to see the field this year. He has a very strong arm btw. He throws mid 90s heat as a pitcher.

Danny, my apologies. If I thought the question was good or bad, I never should have posted it on a message board. No harm intended. With a 1-3 team, i thought there were bigger things to talk about. But no ill-will towards you as a reporter/person.

How come that question shouldn't have been asked? Pretty ridiculous claim from someone else who works in newspapers.

I'm not a reporter or anything else but a Lamar fan and I wish the question had not been asked because asking it just continued to stir up controversy. If I don't like what I see on the sidelines or on the field and it continues then I personally should either contact the athletic department or quit following Lamar. I understand that as a reporter it is part of your job to continue to follow what is going on but I believe some of the controversy going on across the country today is because of reporters making an issue out of things that will just go away if it was ignored. How many copy cat protesters do you think there would be right now if ESPN had made Kapernicks' not standing for the anthem no big deal. The sad part is that the NFL has a policy that they have failed to enforce yet they think they should be able to suspend a player for a potential criminal issue that was not deemed worthy of an indictment by the judiciary system. Are you going to ask Tic the same question? I can't tell you what his answer might be or what his personal opinion about the protest at the NFL level is, but I can tell you that the anthem is always done while the teams are in the locker room before the basketball games and on days that are double headers with the ladies the anthem is done prior to the ladies game only.
