lcm2007ms Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 27-7. We need a big comeback like last week. They better figure it out at halftime. Quote
Mike Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Secondary continues to get torched and the wind is causing havoc on lu's offense in the second qtr. Blowing hard out here tonight. 27-7 nw st. Quote
Mike Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 27-7 at the half. Lamar can move the ball through the air but the defense has to wake up. Quote
Austin Card Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Whats the deal with the attendence tonight. I thought that there were a lot of seats sold to this. Quote
Mike Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Lu takes opening drive sown the field but stall in the red zone. Settle for fg.27-10 nw st. Now defe:pinch: nse turn. Quote
coachacola Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Like the USA game Lamar gives up 20 in the 2nd quarter. Time for a big comeback. Quote
coachacola Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 And like the USA game, almost the identical score. 30-10 with about 5 minutes left. Quote
coachacola Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 37-17. Lamar still giving up the big play on defense. Quote

geezer Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Overall Lamar defense is improving but still gives up too many big plays. The weakest part of the team right now is defensive secondary. They give way too much cushion and are poor tacklers. The d-line couldn't get enough pressure on the Nwst qb but overall controlled the middle. Nwst made most of their early rushing yards on the outside all though there were a couple of good Nwst runs up the middle on draw type plays. Offensively could not run the ball and Bevil played as he did last year making poor descisions that his receivers could not bail him out of. Jackson hurt an ankle in the second half. Hope it is not serious. Quote
Guest CardinalClaw Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 I am disappointed we lost but I am really disappointed that we were not as competitive as I thought we were going to be. Quote

Hope it is not serious. I'm not going to get into all the negatives about this game as it starts with coaching and ends with execution on the field by the players. It was terrible, however I only blame Bevil for the first INT he under threw the receiver on that play. As for the 2nd and 3rd both times the receivers had their hands on the ball and the DB's on Northwestern just wanted the ball more. I'm tired as it's after 1:30AM and I'll make a post tomorrow that goes from A to Z. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 The defense started off well and the offense came in and turned the ball over. If there is a story line to this game it's not capitalizing on chances (especially in the Red Zone) and inconsistency. I felt like the offensive play calling in the first half just wasn't getting the ball anywhere, Northwestern States defense was big and fast, yet we kept trying to move the ball up the middle, especially with Venson. I like Venson but I fell like he's the type of guy you want taking it around the tackles instead of straight through them. How many plays did we utilize play action on? It seems like with the amount of run attempts play action could have really helped at certain points especially in the first half. The defense from the first half to the second were completely different animals, we never really took over in the second half on defense but we forced numerous 3 and outs, the second half defense did enough for us to have won that game if the offense could have finished drives. All and all this game was partially how I envisioned it, I thought we would have to score 30 or more points to win. But our offense just didn't get anything done on field last night. I knew our defense would bend, although I wish they would have tightened up before the second half. Allowing that many points in the second quarter didn't help us any and then failing to score TD's on several big drives in the second half hurt us too. The offense in the second half did start to roll a little bit although we had to rely on the big pass to JJ more than you want to. I'm upset we didn't hang with them but it's over now on to Texas State. P.S. the most disappointing part of this game was not the team, it was the fans. Where was everyone at? There is no excuse for that game not being a sell out. Quote

If we could of just capitalized on those opportunities this game could of been total different. Quote
Guest CardinalClaw Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 What I just don't understand is how does our defense only give up 17 points in the 1st, 3rd an 4th quarters but gives up 20 in the 2nd. If the defense would of played better in the 2nd an the offense would of finished some of their drives this would of been a totally different game. But we didn't an we lost so congrats to NWST, an like CA said "it's over now on to Texas State". Quote
Guest CardinalClaw Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Enterprise Receiver J.J. Hayes suffered a concussion during an onside kick attempt after Lamar scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter Saturday. The concussion ended a night in which Hayes set a single-game school record with 212 receiving yards on 10 catches, including one touchdown. Also sidelined at the end was receiver Marcus Jackson, who had his left ankle wrapped in ice. Coach Ray Woodard guessed it was the same injury that caused Jackson to miss two of the first three games. Jackson returned from the injury last week against Southeastern Louisiana and caught five passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown pass in that game. The losses of Hayes and Jackson would leave Lamar without its two most productive receivers. Lamar plays a non-conference game next week at Texas State. The Cardinals return to Southland play in two weeks at home against Central Arkansas. Quote
Guest bigred360 Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 1. Total offense Lamar 460, the Demon's 443 2. Turnovers Lamar had 4 and NWST had 2 3. With Lamar down 27-7 and Lamar 4th and one Woodard decides to take a FG with 12:00 left in the 3th quarter. (even if the defense shuts out the Demons the rest of the way there isn't enough time or possessions for Lamar to tie or win the game)???? 4. The special team suck and I don't care if it's Woodard best friend, his brother or a relative he sucks and the special teams suck in all fazes of the game. Kickoff return, Kickoff coverage, FG's and extra points and punt returns. Examples: the punt returner not running and catching the ball in the air and the Demons downing the ball twice within the 5 yard line. Then the kickoff returner runs up to make a catch and the ball bounces off his chest (thank God it went out of bounds). 5. The kickoff coverage teams can't hold the opponents inside the 30 even when Lamar kicked the ball deep. That is terrible because this isn't the only game in which this happens. 6. What in the hell is JJ Hayes doing on kickoff coverage? 7. Why in the heck is their QB running for 50 yards minus the yardage for 3 sacks by the Cardinals? I mean the dude ran at least 4 QB draws. Our DC's did not adjust to that play all night. 8. Then again with the score 27-10 with 3:00 left in the 3rd quarter our kicker misses a 38 yard FG. (It was 4th and 11 but at that point in the game I think they should have gone for it) 9. Northwestern had a 4th and 2 went for it and had a 17 yard pass play in the 4th quarter. The Demon's got a FG out of that series. 10. Then the defense is playing pretty good and the Demon's have a 3 and 10 situation and the QB thows the ball out in the right flat and the running back takes it to the house from 54 yards for the final score of 37-17. Yes the Demons are good and they made plays but they aren't 20 points better. Edit: The punter for Lamar is pretty good as he had a 65 yarder this game and averaged 48.2 yards per punt attempt. Quote
Guest bigred360 Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Oh, and to top it off about the special teams is the coaching staff having to call timeouts to get the right people on the field. Heck, HS teams don't have this problem. What does Lamar work on Friday's as that is usually a walk through practice to make sure this stuff doesn't happen??!!! Finally, this is my last point what in the heck is wrong with our secondary? They are continuously getting beat. Heck, one play there was decent coverage but 2 Lamar players bounced off the WR and he ran in from about 15-20 yards. The tackling sucks! Then on a facegaurding penalty by our DB in the secondary was a stupid.. One he never turned to find the ball and it was over thrown so if he didn't throw his hands up it would have been an incomplete pass. The score was 13-7 Northwestern and the call was against Guillory. It was a 3rd down and 6 pass from the at LU 9 yard line. The penalty is called and the ball is placed on the two. Later that series the Demons score a touchdown to make it 20-7. Quote
coachacola Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Someone was saying that we all love Woodard but most of us here have been complaining about the coaching all season long. I've been cutting Woodard some slack because this is a startup program in it's second year, but he's reminding me a lot of Coach Roc. There were questions about his coaching from the very beginning and he didn't improve the five years he was here. We may be seeing the same thing with Woodard. Quote
coachacola Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Another thing, how come the defense sucks when Woodard specialty is defense? Did anyone check out the UTSA/South Alabama score from last night? UTSA lost in OT to South Alabama while Lamar gets blown out by them. If Lamar does get an invite to the WAC they'll need to hire a FBS caliber coach. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 I agree with 360 The Demons are clearly the better team here but we should have been in this game. I think the Cards realistically could have come up with at least 10 more points in this game. There were two stalled drives in the red zone. A interception that I still don't understand (the entire student section though JJ caught the ball and then the next thing you know NWST's safety is running the other way with the ball. Why can't we use the hurry up offense and pass over the middle more through out the game, at the end of the game we started moving the ball but it was too late. Tight Ends need to be utilized more in the passing game too. We need to aim more for 10-15 yard gains each play rather than 30 yards or 3 yard plays, right now those are our only options. Congrats to JJ on breaking the school record. Without him this game would have been bad. I agree with CC about the coaching I've made critical comments several times. I'm not pleased with the offensive play calling sometimes, I like the play calling at the end of this game and in the second half of the SELU game. The defense has to have suffered from Hinshaw's absence. Quote
