KingSnake Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 The special teams are horrendous. When the punt returner fails to catch the punt, he could at least throw a block to keep NW from downing it at the 2. And the secondary gives way too much cushion (as previously stated) and couldn't tackle my 88 yr old mother. They hit, but don't wrap up, and they aren't so big that they are going to blow up the opposing rb or receiver. I just didn't see the effort it would have taken to beat NW last night. Sure, I question some of the play-calling, but overall, I jsut didn't see enough desire on the field to win that game. Quote
geezer Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 We played like what we are which is a second year program with a lack of depth and many holes still to fill in. I don't have facts on speed but what I mean by holes to fill in is look at the size of the Nwst qb (listed at 220#) and rb (210#)compared to Bevil and Venson (190 and 160) and our biggest DB is listed at 195#. Any wonder why they could run over us? On one of the threads I read today someone mentioned what is JJ Hayes doing on kickoff coverage. My question is as bad as we are at covering kickoffs why don't we have more starters on the coverage? I know D-1 college ball is along way from 1, 2 or 3A high school ball but that was the size school I played at in high school and unless the game was out of reach I rarely came off the field for the entire game. JUCO ball was simalar as we were limited to 45 players at the time. Quote
lu cards Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 its all been said.time to move on to texas state.i have to remind myself every day were a second year team. Quote
Guest bigred360 Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 I made the statement of JJ Hayes on the Kickoff team. It is stupid to put your stud WR on kickoff coverage. I agree we may need more defensive starters on special teams like punts and kickoffs. Hicks is a stud. I'm sure he would shine on those teams. If Hayes is on kickoff return or punt return I have no problem with it. However, it is very possible since the coaches wanted Hayes on the kickoff team and he suffered a concussion we might be playing Texas State without our best two receivers. Not a way I'd like headed to San Marcos as they just beat McNeese in Lake Charles. Would these WR be put on the field on kickoff coverage. James Rodgers, Oregon State, Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma, Austin Pettis and Titus Young, Boise State, Jonathan Baldwin, Pitt or Michael Floyd, Notre Dame? No, it is not worth the risk of injury. BTW, Lamar's biggest DL is Adren Dorsey at 315 lbs. Quote
Bearkat 41 Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 From what I read and I could be wrong, it was on an onsides kick coverage correct? A lot of teams put their best "hands" guys on the field hoping their hands and leaping ability will give them the best shot at recovering the kick. I understand the frustration, but if it was an ondises kick then that probably why he was out there. Quote
LamarAlum Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Lamar has a long way to go, like the Beaumontenterprise stated "The power rushing game that appeared in the second half last week was nowhere to be found" Read more: http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/lamar/article/Lamar-falls-to-Northwestern-State-2209768.php#ixzz1aLcaBtQs We can't be serious about a running game if we continue to use players that are too light to even play in HS and get thrown around like rag dolls. I understand the frustration, but if it was an ondises kick then that probably why he was out there. Woodard was playing to win so he put his best hands on the field. I don't agree with it either though, I wish we would have used someone like Kye Hildreth, still good hands but not going to kill our offense if he misses a game. And for the record I'm not saying that I prefer Kye hurt but you do have to protect your star players. Anyways we would probably be talking about how awesome JJ is if he would have recovered that onside kick. more on the game: the fact that we had more offensive yards than the Demons says it all. They had the slow sustained drives and all we had was the home run ball. Work the middle with TE's and slot guys and we might not have stalled out so many times, also, I know we want to establish the run but we wasted too much time trying to run on a team with an incredible run defense. Use the run to set up the play action pass, that's about all it was good for last night. I agree we need more size at skill positions like RB, QB and in the secondary, did you see the size of NWST's defense? I agree with geezer they were huge. BUT, lets not get ahead of ourselves, this one loss doesn't spell doom for the program/season We could still finish where I originally predicted 5th. NWST is a good team. There are still teams in the conference we can beat. Remember Nicholls was shut out by NWST and McNeese by all accounts of the game was lucky to win. Quote

I still don't think Hayes should be out there with the collisions that take place on an onsides kick. He is too valuable to the team at WR to risk injury. But, that is my two cents. Time to move on to Texas State and hope Hayes can pass his concussion test. Quote
