Lamar versus Central Arkansas

Ladies and men take on Central Arkansas this afternoon with the ladies in Arkansas and the men at home at 4:30 PM. Currently the ladies are midway through the second quarter and are down by fifteen.

Half time for the ladies and they are down by twelve at 27 - 15 in favor of Central Arkansas. Ladies have had a terrible shooting performance so far today at 19% from the field overall, 21% from three point range and 25% from the free throw line. According to the stats the ladies are loosing in all phases. Hopefully the shooting will pick up in the second half and the ladies can regroup and pull out a win although it will be a tough task as UCA has the best overall record in the conference.

Ladies shooting improved in the second half, but not enough to overcome the first half hole. Ladies drop their first conference game 51 - 39. Worst part of this loss is that their is not a rematch this year and the next time the ladies will see UCA is in the conference tourney assuming they both get there and depending on the brackets and outcomes.

Much better start for the LU men as at the first time out UCA is leading 13-12 but UCA has made three three pointers to none for LU.

At the under four minute timeout on the first half the game is tied at 36.

Half time and Lamar is up by two at 41 -39. LU played the last 15 minutes of the half win Nzeakor on the bench with two fouls and over came their usual first half turnover issues by out rebounding UCA 29 - 20 and committing three less personal fouls. Cards have done a good job in the first half of holding the league leading scorer "Howard" to five points but UCA has hit a total of seven three pointers to one for LU. Good tight game. Key to the second half will be if Nzeakor can get into the flow of the game and stay out of second half foul trouble. Also can Lamar continue to control Howard.

At the under eight minute timeout and UCA is up by one point at 63-62. Nzeakor picked up another early foul and has been on the bench most of the half, Howard has gotten hot for UCA and is up to nineteen points four away from his average.

Going to overtime. Game tied at 80. UCA goes to the free throw line trailing by one with .4 seconds left and makes one of two. Edited January 7, 2018 by geezer

Going to a second over time with the score tied at 89. UCA got the ball off of a LU turnover with thirty seconds left but missed the potential game winner and Frenchwood got the rebound. Nzeakor has fouled out so we'll see who steps up. Lamar missed four free throws in the first overtime.

It took two overtimes but LU manages to loose a home game. LU missed thirteen free throws and had fourteen turnovers and shot a miserable 13% from three point range.

And this is a preseason bottom tier team we lost to at home. Out played and out coached! Good news? We had less than 10 turnovers (8) in the first half.

UCA was a team Lamar should have beaten if they are to live up to the preseason expectations, but UCA may have played a tougher pre-conference schedule than Lamar did and they faired pretty well overall, so I think the preseason conference pick was off base. They are young but with the seven footer getting better each game UCA can probably compete night in night out with anyone in the conference.

Central Arkansas played well in road games routing Cal and playing UCLA to overtime.They have one of the best closers in the conference in Howard so I expect them to have a good chance to make the conference tournament.Still that last second call in regulation that did not effect a shot is rarely made and did cost us the game.
