Let's see how the SLC is doing this week...

#150 ACU (9-1, they have played a weak schedule)

#193 SFA (5-3, no longer the dominate team)

#228 LU (4-5, should be 6-3 but can't close games)

#236 Nicholls

#240 UNO

#250 Central Arkansas

#272 TAMU-CC

#270 HBU

#281 SELA

#295 SHSU (3-7, getting close to the dreaded 300 zone)

and finally McNeese, IWU and NW State are just plain awful!

Not sure those three schools are as bad as the rankings indicate. They have all played some teams from the mid ranked conferences, but just don't have a quality win. The overall ranking for the SLC is 29 out of 32. While none of them is likely to be a contender in conference I still expect them to potentially be competitive and a school that LU could loose to fairly easily especially if it's at their place.

Latest women's RPI rankings:

Lamar 57

SFA 67

SFA beats Lamar, but Lamar goes around them in the rankings. This is the highest Lamar has been ranked this season in the RPI Poll.

On the men's side, Lamar is now ranked 222. That is an improvement of 80 spots in 3 weeks. They also predict the conference tournament champion with Cards having 3rd best chance at 9%. ACU has a 38% chance and SHSU has a 35% chance.

Latest RPI rankings:

Women:

Lamar 59

SFA 78

What is hurting our rankings is the SLC teams play 3-4 non-div 1 teams. By far the highest average amount Div1 conferences and the RPI rankings do not recognize those wins. And the NCAA uses the RPI rankings in their tournament selection/ seeding. Lamar played 4 non-div1 schools, no one ranked ahead them played more than 1.

As far as the guys:

SHSU 147

ACU 186

Lamar 219

According to RPI, no matter who wins the conference tournament, that team will be ranked last in the field and play one of the 4 play in games. Same problem as the women, schedule is too weak.

Great observation, I hope Marco Born and other conference ADs recognize the problem and push to upgrade the schedules. Lamar can help itself but the whole conference needs to upgrade for it to do any good come NCAA selection time.

If the women win the conference and have an RPI better than 75 I believe they will not be in the play in game.Remember they hold a tier 1 win over a top 25 team Texas A&M on the road and currently have an RPI of 59 which is high for teams in the lower half of the conferences with automatic bids. The men will probably be in a play in game.

Here's the how the top SLC teams did against only D1 opponents:

ACU 21-6

SHSU 18-10

LU 15-12

SELA 14-15

UNO 13-12

TAMU-CC 10-17

HBU 10-17

UCA 10-18

Going into the SLC tourney LU is on a 8 game winning streak and have won 11 out of their last 13 games.

Massey give LU a 65% chance of beating HBU, 87-83.

If LU wins the tourney they'll be 18-12 against D1 opponents going into the NCAA play-in round and will have a 11 game winning streak.

In the Women’s Basketball RPI rankings Lamar is up to #48 this week. SFA moves up to #73. Rest of the conference is mired in the hinterlands.

Also the ESPN bracketology for the Women shows Lamar, if they win the SLC Tournament as a #13 seed playing Iowa State in the first round. The CBS prediction shows Lamar as a 14 seed playing Oregon State.
