geezer Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Half time and LU is up 44-42. After a very strong first eight minutes of the second quarter to go up ten, the ladies let Sam end the half on an eight -0 run. Quote
geezer Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Solid third quarter and LU extends the lead to 68-61. Quote
geezer Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Ladies win by a final of 81-76. Crump led Lamar with 22 points. Barrs set a new career record for assists and Kinard ties the career three point made record. Quote
geezer Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Mens game at the first half under eight minute time out Sam Houston is up by one at 12-11. Generally a pretty even game to this point with neither team shooting very good and turnovers even at seven which is still too many. Sam is making some three pointers but LU is shooting good again from the free throw line. Quote
geezer Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Lamar closes the first half with a strong scoring performance from freshman Davian Buster to finish the half with 12 points to lead the Cards followed by Barrett with nine points and nine rebounds, to take a 41-26 half time lead. Quote
Skinny1 Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 Sam is making a run at the Cards to cut the lead to 10. Both coaches are upset with the inconsistent officiating. Quote
Skinny1 Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 Lamar retired James Gulley’s jersey at halftime. Quote
geezer Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 At the twelve minute mark of the second half Lamar's lead has fallen to eight points. Nzeakor is on the bench with three fouls and Lamar has taken several bad shots and aren't controlling the rebounds. Quote
geezer Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 1:44 left in the game and after letting the lead slip to two points Lamar has traded baskets and are up four points at 68-64. Cards will have the ball coming out of a time out. Quote
geezer Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 (edited) Lamar holds on for a 75-72 win. Garth finishes the game with six straight free throws and 21 points total. Freshman Davian Buster scores 16 points with Barrett getting another double-double with fourteen points and thirteen rebounds. Nzeakor had 11 points to round out the Cardinal double digit scoring. geezer Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 Cards have two games on the road next week and even though they beat both of the up coming opponents at home will need to really play well to get at least a split next week. With the win today and an SFA loss the Cards have moved all the way up to fifth place. Five games left with two on the road and three at home to finish. All five games should be very competitive but games the Cards can win. Quote
Skinny1 Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 This win is the 1000th win in school history. Pretty cool on the basketball alumni night. Quote
coachacola Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Lamar retired James Gulley’s jersey at halftime. I remember watching him play. He had a smooth shooting touch for a big man. I think he around 50 offers but chose LU. Those were the days! Quote
Skinny1 Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 My best memories of Gulley was going head to head with Karl Malone (LaTech) and holding his own. I think Gulley was one of the few players Malone couldn’t push around or intimidate. Quote
WildCard Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 I remember watching him play. He had a smooth shooting touch for a big man. I think he around 50 offers but chose LU. Those were the days! Pat Foster set up camp in Newton--wouldn't let him out of his sight. Gulley not only held his own against Malone (who was 2 years older) but he also did so against Duke in a preseason NIT game in Houston. As for retiring his jersey, it was about time! Quote
