BRI Staff Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Lamar football plans to have a No. 1 quarterback named before practices begin again in August, coach Ray Woodard said. This would be a change from last season, when multiple quarterbacks contended for the starting job before coaches finally settled on Andre Bevil, a senior last year. But Bevil is gone, and none of the three quarterbacks Lamar used during spring practices has started a game for Lamar. That could make naming a projected starter before practices begin in August all the more important when preparing for the Sept. 1 opener at Louisiana-Lafayette. "I think that's what we'll do this year," Woodard said of picking a No. 1 quarterback among junior college transfer Ryan Mossakowski, and sophomores Jeremy Johnson (Silsbee) and Caleb Berry, before August practices. "I'm not going to tell you who that's going to be yet." LINK: http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/lamar/article/Lamar-plans-to-pick-starting-quarterback-soon-3491482.php?cmpid=twitter Quote
Mr.KnowItAll Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 IMO, Berry had the best spring and spring game with Mossakowski second and JJ third. However, JJ can do so much with his feet that you don't really get to see in practice. It is still neck and neck. Quote
puddin tane Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Berry will get the "prewitt"---he will be the holder Quote
Guest McneeseKilla Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Hopefully nobody gets the prewitt treatment and the best man wins. Do y'all think berry can be the guy though based on what's been seen or can jj pull it out this year? Id like to see jj get a shot just because he can make plays. Quote
puddin tane Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 i think berry can..but i dont see ray playing him...be moss/jj for gadget plays/berry if they get hurt Quote
coachacola Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Supposedly Woodard is taking a more "hands off" approach to the defense and is letting Bill Bradly run the defense. Is he doing the same with Fueck and the offense? I'm thinking (hoping) we'll see things run a little differently now. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 i think berry can..but i dont see ray playing him...be moss/jj for gadget plays/berry if they get hurt I like Berry, I said it right after the McNeese game that I thought he would contend for the starting spot. Puddin' so your saying you think both Moss and JJ are inferior? How many practices did you go to? Also the only QB who won games for us last year was Bevil, he was better than he got credit for, while Prewitt fans kept calling for him because of what he did in 2010, when he had chances in 2011 he did not 'game change' Quote

I'm thinking (hoping) we'll see things run a little differently now. when I was reading your post out loud I laughed at your misspelling of Kuecks name but as for the QB's I think Jeremy Johnson is going to surprise everyone and be named the starter and do well. They'll need his legs to make plays when the offense struggles early on. That's just my thought on the subject. Quote

For some reason I thought his name began with a F! Anyway, I agree with you on JJ starting next year. Since Moss hasn't blown people away and with a young group of wide receivers they don't need a great pocket passer. Quote
Guest mendelj Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Bevil is the only one that won games because he is the only one that really got to play. Quote
Guest mendelj Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 They needed JJ's legs last year and I don't remember him producing much with them when he was in. Quote
coachacola Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 They needed JJ's legs last year and I don't remember him producing much with them when he was in. He had some real good runs in the Texas State game. He came into the game in the second half and ignited the offense. There were a few other games that he came into and had some nice runs, but he really didn't play that much. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Bevil is the only one that won games because he is the only one that really got to play. I seem to remember 3 different QB's playing multiple games last year. Why is it so hard to give Bevil the nod. For what he had to work with and how much criticism he received from literally every direction he did fine. I was very critical of Bevil after the 2010 campaign, I really though that someone else could take that job from him, when given their opportunities no one did. He had some a few good games and series, but was never really given credit for them. Whoever the QB is I hope everyone gets behind them after they're named, it's a young team we don't need fans and parents dividing the team by making the QB race into a popularity contest. Quote
Who Dat Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 They needed JJ's legs last year and I don't remember him producing much with them when he was in. Jeremy Johnson was a redshirt freshman last season seeing his first action in College. It's my theory that he's worked hard and improved over the offseason and will be much better next season. At least thats what I'm hoping for because I think we're gonna need him to play well for the team to succeed. Quote
Guest mendelj Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 I agree. Bevel did much better 2011. I was skeptical after 2010. But I have to say he had a great receiving core and JJ made some very tough athletic catches. I too hope for the best. As Cardinal fans we need to get behind them 110 %. After watching some of the practice scrimmages and practices and hearing how excited the boys sounded to be out there is was very encouraging. Practices actually sounded like a true football practice and the boys were made accountable when they made some mistakes over and over. It definitely looks like the discipline of the team is much better. And, the boys seem to really like the new coaches after reading some of their newspaper interviews. Quote
Guest McneeseKilla Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Bevil didn't win shiznits..he won two games imo opinion and they were both southeasterns games over in the swamp. The rest were all won by the defense and special teams, prewitt or jj or berry shoulda been playin. I'm gna just give a prediction jj wins the job. Quote
Guest mendelj Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Why do you predict Jeremy winning the job? Quote
Guest McneeseKilla Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Why do you predict Jeremy winning the job?. Because the kid is a playmaker, why not predict him to be the guy when he's the most electrifying guy on the field. Quote
geezer Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Since none of the three current qbs did anything to really distance themselves from the rest, at least from a fans perspective how about the incoming true freshman as the starter. Quote
puddin tane Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 I'd plan redshirting him...at least till you see if the line can block Quote
Mike Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Since none of the three current qbs did anything to really distance themselves from the rest, at least from a fans perspective how about the incoming true freshman as the starter. It's a big jump from high school to college. The QB that Woodard picks will be ready after a full summer and then two-a-day workouts to learn the new playbook. We've spoken to Bergeron and he's ready to compete but even he expects to redshirt his freshman season. Everyone needs to remember that Mossakowski wasnt with the program last season and JJ and Berry are both learning an entirely new system. Coach Kueck didn't arrive on campus that much before Spring Drills began so they've had a crash coarse trying to learn this offense. Quote
puddin tane Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 inferior? where did i write inferior? but you want to rag on me..I'll take it and spell it out ...jj is not a college passer..of the 3 he is the least talented when it comes to chunking the ball...yes he can run....i think he had what? 20-30 runs before he was out for the season? ..moss---aint setting the world on fire ...berry..also didnt set the world on fire, but i think he had the best spring of the 3 so..you got a team that is going to have to pass to win..you want a running qb..who SORRY, cant take a hit...I think berry has done the best..but he's not THE PRETTY pick..so i see him being the holder now--WHY HAVE A THREAD ASKING OPINIONS? so You can bitch if YOU dont agree? Guest mendelj Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 The most electrifying player on the field is VanLawrance Franks. He's a little ball of fire. Quote
