Lamar football coach Ray Woodard has floated the idea of opening future seasons against McNeese State instead of playing a non-conference game. McNeese State coach Matt Viator said he likes the idea but is concerned about the difficulties that come with finding a non-conference opponent for the end of the regular season.

He probably want be around to see it happen.

Dang there are some Woodard haters on here...

Even after what I consider a VERY positive off-season.

I don't understand anyone who thinks he hasn't done a good job with what he had to deal with. He was a good hire to start the program and I think he will continue this season with improvement but coming from not having a team is tough for anyone.

I agree. I do not think that many realize how hard it is to build a program from scratch.

I think the decision makers understand.

Other schools like ODU and South Alabama took an extra year or two before competing in their conferences. Lamar basically had 1 year to get up to speed for conference play and they've still managed to win 9 games in 2 years and not finish last in the conference. I guess since Woodard didn't win the SLC title this past year he's a failure in some fans' eyes. ::)

Well for this being the programs third year back winning 6 games would be huge IMO but for the nay Sayers out there. Lamar has proven they will hire top notch coaches for our level so I'm not worried.

Back to subject title, maybe it is a hint that LU is looking to another conference. Then the McNeese coaches concern about a late season non-conference game doesn't matter and the old rivalry continues.

I think it's fine at the end of the season if LU starts getting better like we expect.

I'm with the McNeese coach though, if we just replace our end of season match with a DII team that would suck IMO.

After reading the WAC thread, this was my first thought also.

I was very vocal about my disappointment last year. I felt that the team was moving backward instead of forward. That being said, I completely agree with what you said Mike. I believe the right changes were made in coaching, and we have had a very good recruiting season. I'm not looking for us to win the SLC, or even make the playoffs. I just want to see us improve every year. I'm positive we will definitely improve over last year.
