nickels Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 LOL except 50 times worse. I don't want SHSU in the FBS. The playoff experience is way too much fun to trade for some shitty non-bcs bowl game. You can't fill your stadium now (dont give me those bullshit attendance numbers either). What do you think is going to happen when your losing by 70? I'm all for it though, I would love to see Lamar in the FBS. :P Quote

Glass house. Look at the ESPN 3 replay and count. Embarrassing. And at least our team can beat high schools. You guys are an embarrassment to a mediocre FCS conference. At least you're good at basketball...oh wait....you're absolutely awful at that too. Quote

Guest LU 17 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Nickels, I was at the Sam Houston game. You are wrong about the attendance. As far as the LU basketball team, I don't remember seeing y'all(well not y'all because I know your not an athlete), them in the NCAA tourney. Quote
coachacola Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Not much new in this article. It discusses a little about the 15 schools contacted by Karl Benson about joining the Sun Belt, including Lamar and SHSU. http://fboutpost.blogspot.com/2013/02/15-teams-contacted-by-sun-belt-about.html cfoutpost @cfoutpost @WACJack Of the 15 teams the Sun Belt Conference has emailed, who would you see joining the conference? Jack @WACJack @cfoutpost Ga So, then App /NMSU /Lamar or dark horse of UTA football Quote
dacards Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 As a current student I think this would be awesome, but it'd be a while before they were relevant in football at least. Quote

Guest eagle eye Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 As a current student I think this would be awesome, but it'd be a while before they were relevant in football at least. Maybe this will motivate the movers and shakers at Lamar to try to get into the Sun Belt. Beaumont Enterprise @BmtEnterprise Big football moves could cost Lamar http://dlvr.it/2zrHDD #SETXNews I have mixed emotions about a move to the Sun Belt. It would make sense because Lamar would get a bigger payday being in the SBC but, like dacards said, it would be a while before Lamar's football, and basketball, teams would be relevant. Being in the SBC could mean it will be easier for Lamar to recruit in all sports but we would surely take our share of lumps as we grow. It's not like we can choose when we go to the Sun Belt. Opportunities don't happen every day. However, we are struggling so much in our marquee sports that it's hard to think how much worse it would be in the SBC. I think at the end of the day I have changed my mind about moving. I wasn't for it at first but after learning some things I would have to support the move. As a guy who was around for the first move to the Sun Belt and what a bad move it was I was leary but unlike then we don't have an established, successful program leading us into the new conference (basketball) that was all smoke at the time. Pat Foster was the coach and he built his success off Billy Tubbs' teams in the same way he ran the Houston Cougars into the ground living off Guy Lewis' players. We are building a new football program and in the second year of a new basketball regime. How better to build programs than go to a conference that is more conducive to recruiting better players? I'm in for the move. Onward and upward! Quote
LUSportsFan Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I think we should move if we get the chance. I hope some of our conference mates make a move also, but that's their business. Football will be a little rough. I'm hoping that this year is an aberration of Coach Knight's tenure at LU. Based on current and future SBC teams we were 3-1 last year with wins against ArkSt, the Ragin Cajuns, and TxState. We lost to UTA. In reference to Coach Foster... Had to look it up, but we were three coaches away from the Pat Foster years when we moved to the SBC. Coaches were Tom Abatemarco (2 years), Tony Branch (2) years, and Mike Newell. Newell's 2nd year was our first in the SBC. Coach Foster had led the Houston Cougars to two NCAA tournament and two NIT tournament appearances before LU moved to the SBC. Looks like he didn't start out with much at Houston. Guy Lewis's record his last two years at UH was 16-16 and 14-14. In Coach Foster's seven year stay at UH, his teams played in the post season every year except one, his third season there. The Coogs had 3 appearances each in the NCAA and NIT tournaments. Coach Foster's teams were 25-6 (NCAA) and 21-9 (NIT) his last two years at Houston. Quote

dacards Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 If I've learned anything it's that the media knows a lot less than they put off that they do especially regarding conference realignment. A few of the other schools I've followed have had the media come out and say things, with the athletic director to come out and say the exact opposite a little bit later. Obviously some of this is posturing and everyone just looking out for their best interest. Quote
jdcurran235 Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 the article is from a blogger and not an actual media person. I dont really buy anything he says except for the fact the sunbelt is having meeting on the 9th. Quote
coachacola Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Latest rumor has App State, Georgia So. and James Madison getting invited. The first two I understand, but James Madison? They are up in Virginia. I've read that West Virginia is complaining about the travel now that they are in the Big 12. I can't see how JMU would like the travel in the Sun Belt, and for a lot less money than what WVU gets from the Big 12. Quote
coachacola Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 And Deleware to the Sun Belt? Jack @WACJack Sun Belt with Delaware and JMU/App/GaSO could be fun. Lots of them's (Texans, Yankees, Cajuns, down staters and 2 doses of hill people) Quote

Coach Foster's teams were 25-6 (NCAA) and 21-9 (NIT) his last two years at Houston. I suppose I'm guilty of revisionist history in regard to Pat Foster. All I remember is the LU program started going downhill during his tenure. I know Foster's teams went to the NIT but they seemed to consistantly underachieve. I was personally glad to see him go. Little did we know it would be a long, long time before we did anything to speak of in basketball. We all though Mike Newell was going to be better but.... As you may have guessed I'm not a Foster fan but you are right the Cougars did go to the NCAAs three times and the NIT three times and they lost in the 1st round every time except his second season when they lost in the 2nd round of the NIT. His 21-9 record in his last year was only good enough for 3rd place in their conference. With this kind of success why did he leave Houston? Or why was he fired? And why did a presumably good coach like Foster end up at University of Nevada Reno? The last two NITs at Lamar were on reputation of the past decade more than excellence of the basketball being played. The last season, 1985/6 Lamar was 18-12, 6-6 in conference and 4th in the Southland Conference. That was a tribute to the Montagne Center and the support Lamar basketball enjoyed at the time more than the Lamar team's performance. Our team was decent but it was clear it was going downhill. I do miss seeing that sweet James Gulley jumper from the baseline though. Quote
geezer Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 1985/86 Don't mean this as an excuse for LU's less than adequate performance of the last 28 years but isn't that about the time that ESPN started the TV $$$$ flow that has since triggered much of the conference realignments at all levels. I think that's a valid point. +1. I'll agree to some point but Lamar has taken a long time to become relevant again. Last year was a nice start and this year is a rebuilding year as has been discussed in the "Above the Rim" forum. Lamar has not done a good job of hiring coaches. This includes football then and now. I think the jury is still very much out on Coach Ray and if you check out this forum for any length of time it ain't looking good. We need to see some noticeable improvement this year. I think that's fair. He's had five years now. We should be at or above .500 to have some sense that Lamar's football program is going in the right direction especially with paddy cakes like Oklahoma Panhandle State and Bacone (Who?) on the schedule. The road to relevancy is wins. Fans like 'em, alumni like 'em and potential recruits like 'em. Whether or not we go to the SBC we need to start winning. Start winning like the 70's and 80's basketball team and tickets will be hard to come by in all the sports and isn't that what we all want. Like Al Davis used to say, "Just Win, Baby!". Quote
Go Cards Go Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I feel LU administration has a long term goal to get there but the issue IMO is the door may shut and not be open when the powers that be think we may be ready. The AD should be doing whatever it takes to make this happen and it looks like he doesnt have any interest in doing so. I cant help but think if Tubbs were still here or if Tidwell had taken that job we'd be singing a different tune. Quote
