Mike
Just got home from tonight's scrimmage and came away impressed with the effort tonight. Overall there were 12 total series with the offenses scoring 4 TD's and kicking 1 FG. The defenses had 7 stops which included four 3 & Outs, so both sides of the ball had their moments. I was asked about the QB's in the Q/A thread I posted (it pays to post questions) so I paid extra attention to the offense and the specifically the QB's to gather thoughts and I came away really surprised how far Caleb Berry has come in a year. In my opinion Rex Dausin is bigger, has the quicker release and stronger arm but Berry is clearly the guy under center starting in a few weeks. This offense just flowed while he was in the game whether they were facing the #1 or #2's on defense. The tempo of the offense is very fast and Berry makes super quick decisions getting rid of the football and his throws were on target. Ryan Mossakowski didn't get the opportunities tonight but played pretty well while out there. He did have a pretty TD pass to Kevin Johnson. Rex Dausin has the tools but is probably a year away from really competing for the starting job. Robert Mitchell is a great athlete and has probably the strongest arm of the bunch but I'd be shocked if he wasn't redshirted. Judge Wolfe didn't get a snap under center but I saw him getting snaps on offense at WR. He's a good athlete so we'll see where he ends up. Here were my very unofficial stats for the QB's tonight at the scrimmage: Caleb Berry: 19-25 ~200yds 2 TD's 0 INT's 1 rush for 40 yds and a TD Ryan Mossakowski: 3-6 ~43yds 1 TD 0 INT's Rex Dausin: 5-8 ~60yds 0 TD's 0 INT's Robert Mitchell: 1-2 ~50yds 0 TD's 0 INT's Other random thoughts: - It was nice to see ZERO turnovers by the offense. Unlike my Dallas Cowboys who played with butter on their gloves today the Cards didn't put the ball on the turf one time. The QB's also made good decisions and didn't have an interception.......nice work all around - I think there were only two maybe three penalties all night. For a team that killed themselves with penalties last season it was a welcome site. Here's to hoping they can keep it up. - The WR group has gone from inexperienced and probably one of the weaker units on the team last season to probably the most improved & deep units on the offense. Michael Handy, Reggie Begelton were guys that were injured last season and both are playing much better early on this Fall. Kevin Johnson has worked his way back and looks positive out there. Gee Gladney is quick and making plays from the slot position Mark Roberts has come in and adjusting well and Barry Ford and Jordan Edwards are both making catches and providing senior leadership. Check out my interview with Coach Barbay for more discussion about the WR's. - Freshman RB Kade Harrington continues to make play after play for the Cards offense. He had 4 grabs for around 45 yards tonight but his quickness and elusiveness catch me and many guys on the LU defense off guard. He had a couple highlight reel plays tonight and if you listen to Coach Woodard has likely played his way out of a redshirt. He's not a big guy but he plays tough you can tell his teammates like him. Consider me a Kade Harrington fan after watching the last few practices and tonight's scrimmage - I must apologize to the defensive fans here because tonight I really was paying close attention to the offense. the defense had their moments and I promise to dedicate more time to analyzing their efforts in the future. - Nice work tonight buy the OL as well. Gillam, Babin, Brock, Kelso and Treadway were the starters and Caleb Berry's jersey stayed clean. There were also numerous converted 3rd and shorts which stood out to me. Good job by all the big guys tonight. - This team IMO will have multiple freshmen that contribute this season. They are out there making plays and I don't think the staff will be able to keep them off the field. They've done a good job of recruiting the last couple of seasons. Overall I came away from the scrimmage impressed. I do have some more info but I'm totally burned out after a long day. I'll provide more thoughts and statistics in the morning. geezer
Thanks for the report. It seems very objective and encouraging. My caution is we are still playing against ourselves.
Mike
Thanks for the report. It seems very objective and encouraging. My caution is we are still playing against ourselves. You're Welcome. "Cautiously optimistic" comes to mind. I do remember this offensive unit struggling vs the defense in these same situations last year so I am encouraged by tonight's performance. I'd also be nervous about two freshmen having to contribute immediately at TB even if they are both playing extremely well in practice. dirtybird
I was impressed with pass protection. Berry had plenty of time in the pocket. The freshman running back can flat out play. Very much improved offense, from last years scrimmage.
Guest NorthoftheBorder
Most detailed report yet this fall and thanks for the info!! If Harrington is the real deal he will put fans in the stands!! No matter what, the offense will sink or swim on the OL so it is important how well they play. What is the average weight accross the front of who you are projecting as the OL starters?? KABrother88
I was excited about him in February when he signed...seeing what he was able to accomplish at the 5A level against the big boys caught my attention...that being said I didn't expect him to be an immediate impact...but that just makes it that much better

No matter what, the offense will sink or swim on the OL so it is important how well they play. What is the average weight accross the front of who you are projecting as the OL starters?? Here's the depth chart from the football prospectus a few months ago: Left Tackle 76 Justin Brock 6-5 280 So.-1L 71 Tramon Shead 6-6 305 Jr.-TR Left Guard 72 Brock Wempa 6-2 345 Sr.-1L 62 Ian Kelso 6-0 280 Jr.-2L Center 64 Kyle Gillam 6-1 270 Sr.-3L 62 Ian Kelso 6-0 280 Jr.-2L Right Guard 58 Bret Treadway 6-3 250 Fr.-HS 68 Chris Mayer 6-7 345 Jr.-TR Right Tackle 70 Stephen Babin 6-4 280 Sr.-3L 56 Chance McCormack 6-3 295 Jr.-TR With Wempa out for the season Kelso has taken his place. Looks like the starters for now are: Gillam, Babin, Brock, Kelso and Treadway. According the March Lift-A-Thon Treadway is the lightest at 271 lbs but he is the strongest lineman. Kelso was listed as backup behind both Wempa and Gillam, so if he's the starter then 1 or 2 new guys should make the 2-deep. I think a new 2-deep is going to be released this week. Should be interesting to see how that will look, especially at running back.

Treadway being over 270, hearing Gilliam is about 287, Brock is near 300 etc. so it would be good if "ACCURATE" weights would be published somewhere!! How damn hard is it to get it right?? That is not directed at you Coach but I wonder if our athletic media doesn't think it is important or want to put out this type of information accurately. I mean when a lineman is now 25lbs heavier than what is listed, then should you update the information, or maybe it is an effort to misinform our opponents!! ::)
