BSFwins Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 That is why I said I doubt they would be interested in a home and home with Lamar? Are you really comparing the football programs at SFA and Lamar? Lamar has never made the FCS playoffs. Montana State does regularly and SFA has been very good. In a few years of winning, yes Lamar could schedule them. Just not right now! I love Lamar and I hate stating something negative to show why it would not benefit Montana State to schedule Lamar currently. You know you have to look at it from their point of view too. What would they get out of a game coming to Beaumont? Besides a victory? Quote
LU1991 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Good artcle about Saturday's game: http://blog.beaumontenterprise.com/inthecards/2013/09/23/the-cutting-room-floor-lamar-vs-bacone/ Kade Harrington is gonna be fun to watch this season and sounds like he is a good guy off the field as well. geezer Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Yes I am comparing Lamar to SFA. Size of facility, overall quality of facilities, ease of travel to destination. I think in these areas LU and SFA are very similar and with the regional airport LU may have the plus. Fan support and past performance level may go to SFA but that is subject to more rapid change than facilities. Quote
BSFwins Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Okay...I'm not going to argue as you have your mind made up. But, if you were Montana State's AD and you were gonna take a game (1-4 OOC) with a SLC school one being a fairly new program or the one who in recent memory beat Lamar 73-0? I know the game I will take to better my team that is in the FCS almost every year... Quote

Further, I don't know if I would give SFA the nod in fan support. This year with Montana State and McMurry at home SFA is averaging 8,844. We are averaging 8,245 with OPSU and Bacone. I would hope we would have sold more tickets with the #2 rated FCS team in town replacing one of our opponents, but I don't know. There was a little bump for SFA 8,254 vs McMurray and 9,433 vs Montana St. Ours was 8,433 vs OPSU and 8,056 vs Bacone. Here's the attendance comparison for the years since we started back. Year Lamar Record SFA Record 2012 11,119 4-8 6,709 5-6 2011 14,443 4-8 8,747 6-5 2010 16,079 5-6 9,410 9-3 Quote
geezer Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 My statements only support the reasonable hypothesis that Lamar should be able to schedule good quality FCS schools for home games in the future. I used Montana State as an example since they did travel to SFA. As for the quality of Montana States opponents this year you might want to check their complete ooc schedule. To get one of these games LU will probably have to go there first. Quote
BSFwins Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Oh my Lord, we are averaging about 8,000 in a 16,000 stadium? Wow!! http://www.lamarcardinals.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2011-2012/lu11.html http://www.lamarcardinals.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2011-2012/lu09.html Based on these two SLC home games against rival schools I see who we play as far as FCS opponents matter as far as attendance. Points well made based on facts! You are totally correct here..... Quote
LUSportsFan Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Oh my Lord, we are averaging about 8,000 in a 16,000 stadium? Wow!! We could be like Eastern Michigan (FBS) averaging 6,535 in a 30,200 capacity stadium (5,405 vs FBS team Ball State). :) Seriously, I think attendance impact is part of the scheduling discussion. My brother-in-law dropped his season tickets in one of the premium sections because he was getting tired of the home game OOC competition. Hopefully, he will pick up one of the three game mini-packages now that we're moving into conference play. I was sorry to hear about his decision, but to each his own. We're still going to the games and keeping our season tickets up. I think part of the drop Saturday was the threat of inclement weather. We just brought our rain gear and jackets and had a great time. We were ready to get rained on. It turned out to be great weather to watch a football game. We usually go into the stadium about 1 1/2 hours before the game, watch the teams warm up, and leave when the game is over. Thinking long term, now that the newness of bringing football back is wearing off, I think the Cardinals need to be more agressive in marketing the team. We'll get the fans who will support a winner as the team improves. We just need to find some more people who will support a team while it is on its way to becoming a winner. Quote
coachacola Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 Woodard needs to start winning conference games to get attendance up. Watching no name D2 and NAIA teams won't draw the crowds when the team is losing 7 or 8 games a year. As others have repeated here often, they just have to win and the fans will come. Quote

lu cards Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 lamar will sell out the central ark game(homecoming). Quote
dirtybird Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Lamar needs to be more clear on ticket prices. A lot of people are thinking single game General admission tickets are 40 dollars. I have tried to get people to come to games, and I keep getting this response, We cant afford 40 dollar tickets. I wonder how many more people out there are thinking this ? Quote

I wonder how many more people out there are thinking this ? Athletic Administration for the most part has been a terrible weakness at Lamar over its history, at least since I started going there in 1977. It for the most part has been a patronage postition for favored sons who necessarily didn't understand the position or its importance to the success of the sports teams. There have been a few really good hires (Gilligan I think in the early 70's, Kennan in 1978, Foster in 1980, Tidwell in 2006?to name the most obvious), and one great hire (Tubbs in 1976). But look at the rest of the hires over the years. And that is only addressing coaches. What about the rest of what it takes to run a good or great athletic dept.? The overall body of work over the last 40 years isn't screaming greatness. Having said all that, I am not surprised that people are confused about ticket prices!!! Quote
