coachacola
JMU doesn't want to get left behind when the FBS schools split from the rest of the NCAA: http://www.vuhoops.com/catholic-7-news-analysis/2013/10/1/4789334/fbs-board-produces-a-formal-proposal-to-split-division-i-down
NorthoftheBorder
The split will happen, but it will only involve 4 or 5 conference and Notre Dame. ULL, ULM, Tx State, JMU et al... are not going in the split!! ie....a move by LU to the SunBelt will not get them in what will become the "professional minor leagues" of Pro Football with paid players!! It will consume even more of the $$'s available leaving the LU's, UTSA's, SHSU's ULL's of this world with even less TV revenue!!!
geezer
Whether there is a split from the NCAA by the top tier conferences will depend on TV money. NBC secured Notre Dames football presence no matter how they play, CBS has backed the SEC and ESPN is backing everyone at this point. If the NCAA wants to hold things together they need to develop better relationship with the money sources and figure out additional compensation for the players. College scholarships just aren't enough anymore.
