Knightman Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 A great read!!!!!!!! Go Cards!!!!!!! Knightman Quote
geezer Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I think that makes two interviews that PK has basically said that unless you are a D1 coach you don't have a clue what it takes to build a program. He may be right but putting down your fan base is a sure way to loose support and quickly run out of time. Abetamarco is a prime example of loosing your fan base from stupid talk. Quote
lamar1 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Small school, small school! I'm tired of hearing him say that. So whatt if you're a "small school", be the best "small school" you can be! Quit making being a "small school" as an excuse. Great story about Ali. I guy came up to him and said "If I were as big as you I'd be heavyweight champion of the world" Ali's response "then why aren't you the light weight champion of the world?"" Do you think for a second that Coach Tubbs or Coach Foster thought of themselves or Lamar as a "small school" or "small time" in any way. Hardly. Quote

Hearing him keep saying that has bugged me too. I think he's using that as an excuse for losing. Quote
LUSportsFan Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Just a quick look comparing us with programs that have had recent success in basketball, we're gigantic (per Wikipedia): Admittedly, Coach Knight does have challenges, but others face the same challenges with success. We were the Gonzaga and Butler at one time with the same challenges we currently have. We accepted the challenge then and used it as some way to motivate the teams and the fan base. I liked Coach Knight's comments when he first came here of shooting to build the program to a Butler type program. I just hope he finds a way to do it. I want him to succeed. Lamar: Undergraduate Enrollment - 9,672 Post Graduate - 5,384 Montagne Center - 10,080 Butler: Undergraduate Enrollment - 4,034 Post Graduate - 633 Hinkle Fieldhouse - 10,000 Gonzaga: Undergraduate Enrollment - 4,865 Post Graduate - 2,899 McCarthey Athletic Center - 6,000 Valparaiso: Undergraduate Enrollment - 2,865 Post Graduate - 1,186 Athletics - Recreation Center: 5,000 Quote
lamar1 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Interesting LU sport fan. We know that PK means budget, finances when he talks "small school" Our budget is not close to those programs. My question is what is our BB budget within the SLC? When Foster was winning big our budget was not close to USL, La Tech, Ark. State, North Texas and still beat them reguarly Quote

I'll see if I can get an SLC basketball budget comparison when I get on a "real computer". I think both the OPE database Coachacola linked in a recent post and the USA Today database have drilldowns by sport. I think there is still value in comparing our program with the ones I listed. I see several advantages that we have over the listed programs in building a successful program. The key is to make use of them. I see it as "If other programs can do it, why can't we?" Reading Coach Knight's comments in the article, I get the impression he is accepting the challenge. He needs support. Part of building the program is instilling a positive attitude. It has to make it harder when the fan base is negative. I understand the frustrations of lack of success, but I think we as fans need to help. Sent from my Android device using Tapatalk 2 Quote
