AggiesAreWe
Spoke with Avi recently, heard this column was coming. Interesting piece.
BSFwins
Wow, that is calling it straight! LOL Sadly, I'm not sure the alumni with money or the administration cares what is said. Do they not realize when a article has the title, "Lamar, you sink" people think of the school not just the athletic department or men's basketball team? LAZEEK
Wow. That is really all I can say. I had the pleasure of speaking a very influential person who has HUGE ties to Lamar, SE Texas and SW Louisiana today for about 30 minutes. He really opened my eyes as to why smaller conferences like the SLC have trouble recruiting against bigger conference's. He mentioned some big time players that played their high school ball in the SE Texas/SW Louisiana area that went to Sunbelt or Southland schools. Mentioning that because of AAU, ESPN and academic standards those players back in the day were not recognized as much nationally as they are now. An example was Joe Dumars who was from Lake Charles. One of the top players in the country, and only had offers from 3 schools total. He ultimately chose McNeese St. since it was in his hometown. Another was Karl Malone playing at La. Tech. In todays recruiting world those players would have had much bigger schools offering. Back then players were paid for summer jobs to help offset the scholarships. And were paid well for their services. That is now a NCAA Violation. Academic standards are much tougher now, and yes that is the case even at Lamar. He gave examples of players that LU recruited in the last 2-3 years that were high school kids, and JUCO kids that LU had a huge interest in. The players however were not qualified academically to get into Lamar. It was a great conversation with this person, that has made me realize how tough recruiting is. As far as the column in the Beaumont Enterprise goes........these writers may have some valid points, but by publishing these columns only hurts schools ability to recruit. Do you think if a player does some research on LU and see's a column like this that they would want to come to Lamar? Most likely not. geezer
Remember a newspaper writers job includes selling newspapers and perceived bad new sells. As far the tone of the article it really is not much different than what several posters on this site say.
LAZEEK
And potential recruits will likely read this forums as well, if they search for it. I'm just saying right now LU needs all the positives and help in recruiting, not the negatives.
BSFwins
Agree, I doubt we spoke to the same person but about 10 to 15 years ago a HUGE name and Lamar alumnus mentioned cable TV mainly ESPN, AAU basketball, academic standards as to why in his opinion Lamar would never again make a deep run in the NCAA tournament (Sweet Sixteen). Don't know if I agree but it's proven true so far...
Cplatt
The column is correct though. Look, most of us are LU fans and want more than anything for them to win in all sports, but that crap we watch each week is not acceptable. If I was that bad at my job, id be out. I hope this team atleast upsets a few teams and we win more than last yr which is not exactly raising the bar. I do not know where we go from here but it has to be up. Lamar Pride
While I understand message boards are venues designed for passionate fans to cuss and discuss their team, it is my opinion that the column was uninformed and somewhat irresponsible for a hometown paper. Southland teams are judged upon their conference performance. Some of Lamar's better teams have had dismal pre conference records if you remove the non div 1 teams. I think Roc's best team only won 2 pre conference div 1 games and none on the road. The next few weeks will tell us where the program stands in the Knight era. I agree with many of you that the recruiting class that brought us Webb, Hancock, Minton and Blanks was disappointing. However, I think the coaches did a much better job with this group. Only time will tell, but it is premature to throw this team or coach under the bus.

QB 22
Put the reporter in the room with Knight, shut door and lock it, go back in 10 minutes then let reporter report!!
CoachPace
Players and coaches do not read the media at all. You just go about your business as usual. Even when we were winning we never paid attention to the news or newspaper. All that is a distraction. KingSnake
Why would any legitimate recruit want to come here with this coach? They don't have to read that article...they can see the record. Knight is a joke. Probably the worst hire in school history. He should resign and return the last 1 1/2 years salary. But even that won't undo the damage.
