When the Lamar University men's basketball team steps on the court Saturday to tipoff against Delaware State it will be a small piece of history. Saturday's game against the Hornets will be the first meeting between the two teams on the court.

The Cardinals enter the contest looking to move back above the .500 mark, while the Delaware State is still searching for its first victory of the season. LU is 1-1 overall after an eight-point setback at Fresno State, which was a competitive game right down to the end. Big Red opened the season with a 101-58 victory over Austin College in its season opener.

The Hornets come into the non-conference matchup wondering when their fortunes will change. DSU is 0-3, and all three games have been heartbreakers. Delaware State opened the season with tough home losses to Delaware and Penn, then went on the road to face Nebraska. The Hornets fell behind by 25 points only to rally to within four before the Huskers pulled away late.

This was a good win for the Cards in several ways. First of all it was a road win. Second according to the ranking system I looked at they were ten spots higher than Lamar. Third the cards got out to an early lead and kept the lead until the end. I was not able to listen to all of the game as I was out doing other things, but from what I heard Lamar was a little slow coming out for the second half and Delaware St made an early run to tighten the score up before Lamar got back on track. I keep telling myself to remember this is a young team so look for the positives.

Good team effort. Lincoln Davis had 18 points. Booze was in foul trouble early, but freshman Nick Garth came in and scored 18. The bench scored 38 points (10 from senior Dontavious Sears).

The good: We finally have a team that can shoot 3s, they made 8 of 19. 44 of LU's 77 points came from either freshmen or sophomores. Dorian Chatman had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, 1 steal, 1 assist, but 6 turnovers and 4 personal fouls. Freshman starter Josh Nzeakor had a solid but quiet 8 points and 5 rebounds in only 16 minutes of play.

The bad: 20 turnovers but it's a young team. Big men Kennedy and Gregory combined only played 14 minutes, getting 0 points and 6 rebounds. Kennedy had 2 blocks but he's more of a shot blocker/rebounder than a scorer so maybe he'll progress as the season goes along.

Nice win on the road. The next game on Wednesday is on the road but Houston isn't all that far and then we get 3 at home. Lamar is showing promise and it should be an exciting holiday time at the Montagne for LU basketball. BTW, shouldn't we be favored to win at least 3 of these games? I'm just saying.
