Sweet T Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I hope the men can come away with a victory Quote
geezer Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Typical LU start down 21 -7 with just under 12 minutes left in the first half. Quote
geezer Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Another poor first half by LU. Down by ten at halftime. Lamar has 12 first half turnovers leading to 21 points for ACU. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 They need a true PG. Booze wouldn't see the floor again this year. He is out of control Quote
geezer Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Lamar looses again 80 to 71. Doesn't look like there will be a conference tourney trip this year either. I know there are enough games left to turn this around but this team hasn't taken care of the basketball all year. LU is probably committing double digit turnovers and digging a hole they climb out of in every first half. No one has stepped up to be an on court leader and there is not a consistent player. Chatman had a good scoring game today but has been missing the last several games. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 They are young, and they need a leader. Quote
geezer Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 I'll agree this team needs a leader, but at this point in the season good freshman aren't considered young anymore. I hope I'm wrong but without a true inside threat I don't see things getting better this year or next for that matter. If my memory is correct LU has three commits for next year and none of them or taller than 6-4. Going all the way back to Tubbs second run with the Cards LU has been touting that it has recruited guards that can score at six foot or under and the only one that panned out was Mike James. I just don't think you can win in the SLC or any conference that is stronger counting on small guards to score and no big man that can contribute consistently. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Tyran wasn't very tall, but he was successful. I don't know why he didn't recruit at least one big man. They should be better next year. It can't get worse. Geezer, what do you think is going on with Booth. Quote
geezer Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 I'm afraid Booze was successful in high school doing what he has been trying at LU for both years. Dribble drive penetration, except in high school he didn't have the help defenders that teams have in D1 college basketball contesting every shot and on average he was the same size as the guy defending him so his outside shot came easier. The problem he has at LU is when he gets to the basket the help defense is there because LU doesn't have a big man that commands the respect from the other team. Your right Tyran delivered that last year but even he was inconsistent. I think Nzeakor and Chatman could become consistent threats but at least one of them has to show he can knock down the ten footer consistently so when the help comes there is someone to pass off to that the other team has to guard. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Ok. Do you think he will ever realize that he is playing D1 ball and can't do the things he did in high school? Quote
geezer Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 (edited) No. I don't think he will change as long as he is getting playing time and quite frankly because of the youth on the team I'm not sure there is anyone that will force him to the bench. I think that Price is fed up with the turnovers but none of the current guards are taking care of the ball well enough to set Booze on the end of the bench. Of the four players playing point none of them have really shown they can limit the turnovers. Booze has the most at 48 year to date, followed by Garth with 43, Davis with 31 and Jones with 22 although Jones has half the playing time that Booze has so he really is right there with Booze and Garth. Note turnovers don't include poor shot selection that lead to the long droughts between baskets. I wonder what would happen if you put Mattingly or Owens out front. I know Mattingly probably couldn't defend most of the other point guards in the league but a different defensive scheme might hide that. Edited January 31, 2016 by geezer Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Sears could probably play the two. I don't think he is turnover prone. They desperately need a pg. Zjori can play the position, but he is not 100% and wouldn't be effective. Who was in the game when they made their comeback? Maybe, he should play them as a unit. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 The team is imploding. I don't think certain players are speaking to other players, because of poor shot selection and "ball hogging". I didn't hear this from a player, but from an adult who is privy to this type of information. I hope this isn't true. Quote
geezer Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 If I were in Price's shoes I would be trying different things to control the ball hogging, poor shot selection and turnover issues. If Bosha can play the point and not turn the ball over then it might be worth trying him there and protecting his rehabilitation by changing up defenses etc. Give him some opportunities to get a rest while on the floor. With as few of minutes that Bosha has played this year his stats aren't really accurate but his shooting percentages are bad across the board which while I don't believe the point guard needs to be a primary scorer, the pg needs to be a leader in free throw percentage as that is the player who is fouled most often in critical points during the game. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 His field goal percentage sucks, but that is to be expected if a person is hurt. I don't think he is a viable option. I would try Owens. Things can't get in worse. Quote
baller Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 All right let's remember that three men's teams are ineligible for the conference tournament. After subtracting Incarnate Word,Abilene Christian and Central Arkansas, only 10 teams qualify.I project we will finish ahead of at least Nichols, beat them there, and one other. We are disadvantaged having to play conference leaders twice compared to Louisiana schools that only play the Lumberjacks,Corpus,HBU and Sam once.We are young and the teams on top like Corpus have 8 seniors and the Lumberjacks have 5.We have to win most of our home games against the likes of Abilene,ICW,Sam and McNeese as winning against the top tier of the conference on the road is tough even with upperclassmen for guards and beating Stephen F. Austin at home is unlikely. We could really help ourselves by beating the MSU twice. The scores and location of our comparable foes shows that's a realistic scenario and they play two freshmen guards and a junior. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Maybe, but it is also possible that they won't win another game. They are very unpredictable. They play TAMUCC and HBU two of the best teams in the conference and could've won those games yet UNO, SELA, and Central Arkansas blew them out. If the team is divided, that is going to make it more difficult to win. I do think they will be really good next year. Quote
geezer Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 I really want to be positive about the Cards, but I wouldn't count on them being really good next year, for the most part you have the same players you have and the improvement that I would have liked to see over the year hasn't shown up yet. If you want to be at the top of the SLC you have to beat the Texas teams whether you play them once or twice. Saying the record would be better if you played weaker opponents is giving the Cards an excuse. The record this year is not due to lack of talent like it was a couple of years ago it is lack of execution. Quote
Sweet T Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 You don't think a year of playing together will make them better? Are the guards really that bad. I think Booze has a low basketball IQ so he probably won't improve. I listened to some of the game yesterday. The play by play analyst said that the coaching staff stood and they were yelling a him, telling him to settle down. He still drove and lost the ball. He was immediately benched as was Davis. Garth had to play the point. Owens and Zjori played the two and Sears played the 3. They had some success with that line up. I think Davis and Garth can improve. I am beginning to think that Booze is a "lost cause". And to think, at one point of the season I thought he was improving . Quote
Sweet T Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Christian kennedy is listed as 6'11. He transferred from a juco, but has been injured. Quote
baller Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 There are lots of valid opinions here but let's remember UNO did not blow us out at home.We had three good looks at a three to win in the last seconds by three good shooters and came up empty and had to foul. Thus the loss was by four, hardly a blow out.We can beat McNeese who is playing a lot like us home and away and we will finish ahead of Nichols. Our second full recruiting class along with a year of maturity should go a long way to returning us to the top tier of the Southland. It would be unexpected if we beat a top team at home or an upper half team on the road. That could be said about the bottom half of many conferences. That being said McNeese beat Sam and ICW at home and we need to do likewise. We beat Northwestern St.at home by a bit more than them so for this reason and more I believe we will at least win at home. Skinny1 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 (edited) Want to realize how bad the Lamar BB team is? Of the D1 teams we have played, we have beaten only 6 and those teams have combined to beat 21 D1 schools this year. And SE La, has only won 1 D1 game - that was against us. A&M-CC has beaten 14 D1 schools, SFA has beaten 11 D1 schools, HBU has beaten 9 D1 schools. We will not make the conf. tourney this year and if not next year, it is so long Price. But I guess you get what you pay for and IMHO, there is no reason he should be successful if you look at his coaching record. Edited February 1, 2016 by Skinny1 Quote

Quote
baller Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 As I posted earlier the conference takes 8 teams to the tourney and Abilene,ICW and Central Ark are ineligible so only 10 of 13 are eligible to go to Katy. Also Tic Price has been coach of the year three times by the Louisiana Sports writers,4 times NABC District 8,won 2 Sun Belt championships and a Southland championship and was Southland coach of the year.He also led Memphis to a C-USA North Division title according to Wikipedia.Disappointing start to conference but let's be accurate about facts. The next three home games will tell a lot about our ability to beat out two eligible teams and get to Katy.We beat Nichols there and I believe we will finish ahead of them.
