Lamar has picked up a commitment today but the player has not made it public. For his sake I will not mention his name yet so he can announce it and it doesn't take away from him. I'm hearing a couple of interesting things about him that makes him commitment a big deal. Stay tuned.

I got the go ahead to announce the player who committed Monday. It was LB Tyris Williams out of Liberty HS. Here are the interesting things I mentioned

1.) Williams flipped his commitment from FBS UL-L to us. Very uncommon for a one time FBS commit to end up with an FCS school and I think the majority of those cases I've seen were from the FBS school having a coaching change and the new staff not honoring that commitment.

2.) I've been told Williams is attempting to graduate early and enroll at Lamar in January. For anyone that follows FBS recruiting this is nothing new...many schools will have 2-3 early enrollees. However, it's almost unheard of at the FCS level...the only one I've even heard of is a QB at Sam Houston last cycle. Just think, there is a lot of recruiting going on the last month leading up to NSD by lower level FBS schools filling out their class by raiding FCS commits. If Williams is enrolled for the spring semester it's the equivalent of signing a LOI and he is locked to Lamar. This shows the kid is serious about wanting to be here.

Offer out to Crockett HS ATH Lucky Daniels. HS teammate of Freshman QB Case Robinson. Looks like Lamar is recruiting him as a WR. Last season with Robinson, Daniels caught 53 passes for 1,266 yards and 16 TD. This year he had hauled in 16 passes for 419 yards and 3 scores. He has 6 more TDs when you combine his work rushing, playing DB and returning punts.

Also has an offer from Texas Southern as DB.

A name to keep an eye on as a potential FBS transfer is Texas Tech RB Corey Dauphine. We offered him early out of Port Authur Memorial before he ended up picking up offers from Texas Tech over some of the top programs in the country. He redshirted last season and had only received 2 carries for 25 yards and a TD this year before announcing his intention to transfer today. Since he has already used his RS, if he decides to transfer to another FBS school he'll have to sit out another season...he could still take that path but former Red Raider and Memorial Titan Jalen Barnes and Port Arthur native Coach Brian Morgan could potentially be a factor here.

He was suspended for the first 4 games of the season due to academic issues IIRC. Last 2 games he hasn't appeared so I don't know if there was an additional punishment or what. Mike Handy was suspended for the first 5 games and was back last week.

Just got word that Barnes tore his ACL in practice the week he was back eligible...and since he used his RS at Tech he'd have to apply for a 6th year

Could have some activity coming potentially upcoming.

Last week, Port Arthur Memorial HS WR DeAndre Angelle announce he was planning on committing this week. He currently has been offered by Texas Southern, Southeastern Louisiana, and FBS Akron.

Also an interesting tweet tonight from recently offered Crockett HS WR Lucky Daniels who said "Thinking about linking back up with my bro" then tagged freshman QB and former HS teammate Case Robinson followed by #PeckEm #GoCardinals

Both are similar WR so I'm not sure how much ones recruitment is dependent on the other.

Need to see some offers to D-line and O-line players. Great WR aren't worth a darn if the QB is running for his life and can't get the ball to them.

I think the staff is still evaluating their options on the D-Line. With the loss of so many seniors upcoming there I would expect to see quite a few JUCO guys there. We have 11 offers out to uncommitted HS guys at the moment but JUCO offers usually come later after the season so the staff has a better feel who is going to qualify academically out of JUCO.

On the OL we took 5 HS guys in the 2015 class and were able to RS 3 of them. In the 2016 class we took 2 HS and 1 FBS transfer who is just a Sopomore this season. Both of those HS guys appear to be RSing this season meaning we'll have 3 Jrs, 3 So & 2 R-Fr next year out of those 2 classes.

With the FCS scholarship limit at 63 you don't typically see a steady number of signees each year...the last 2 classes were quite large for an FCS team and I've been told this upcoming class will probabaly be smaller depending on any attrition with the current team. I would guess our 2017 class will be somewhere in the 15-18 range.

New offer out to Sydney Murray III a 6'2" 250 lbs DL from Cisco Junior College. He was a 2-Star by 247 and Rivals out of Richmond Foster HS last year. He is listed as a full qualifier so he could accept an offer for the 2017 cycle or play JC ball another year and come out in the 2018 class. Had HS offers from Appalachian St., Alcorn St. and Prairie View A&M. Alcorn St. has also offered him again for the 2017 cycle.

Daniels has informed me that he committed to Lamar last week. Very talented looking player and appears to be a good get for Lamar.

You've got 2 sitting on the bench.

Duncan Mcvey 6-4 227

Mason Sikes 6-4 249

Like you said all you need is a bulldozer, not a scatback.

They are both Tight Ends. Sikes is being redshirted this year as well.

You could convert one of them to a RB. They wouldn't be a break away threat but 4 yards straight forward three times equals a first and ten. If the coaching staff insists on running the ball run somebody that can get those yards consistently. Can't think of who it is off the top of my head but there is at least one power five conference team that uses a tight end as a blocking back in some situations. Edited by geezer

I'm with geezer. A RB in the 220 size and with some skills is probably not coming to Lamar. You would have better luck looking for senior TE's, with some speed, but not quite the height or the weight of a typical TE.
