Lamar went into the weekend series with Abilene Christian on a 7 game winning streak. Make that a 10 game winning streak after the Cards swept the Wildcats in a 3 game series this past weekend. In a double header on Saturday Lamar won the opener 8-5. Will Hibbs (5-1) got the W for Lamar going 6 allowing 5 hits and 4 runs with 2 BB's and 10 K's. Jake Nash and Jacoby Middleton combined for 5 RBI's to lead the Cards offense. Russell Reid, Robin Adames and Brendan Satran also had nice games for Lamar.

The Cards won the 2nd game by a score of 16-6. Billy Love (2-1) got the win as he went 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 7 hits with 2 BB's and 8 K's. Brett Brown took the Cards the rest of the way allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with a walk and 5 K's. Every single man in the Cards lineup got at least one hit including pinch hitter Ryan Erickson who went 1-1 with an RBI and 8 players had a multi-hit game. It was just an all out assault as Lamar banged out 22 hits including 6 batters with doubles and 3 with HR's. Game 2 was just an old fashioned smack down of a helpless ACU team.

Game 3 yesterday saw Lamar close out the sweep with a 7-5 win. Jayson McKinley (2-0) got the win going 6.2 innings allowing just one run on 5 hits with a walk and 5 K's. Jimmy Johnson got the save in 9th after reliever Enrique Oquendo struggled in the 9th in his 2nd inning of work allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and a walk with 2 K's making the game much closer than it should have been. The Cards scored 3 in the first and 2 more in the 5th to take a 5 zip lead. The Wildcats scored one in the bottom of the 7th to make it 5-1 but Lamar came right back in the top of the 8th with 2 more runs to go up 7-1. ACU didn't give up as they engineered a 4 run rally in the bottom of the 9th before Johnson shut the door getting the final out of the game to complete the sweep of the Wildcats. The top 3 in the Cards lineup yesterday Stijn van der Meer, Jake Nash and Bryndan Arredondo combined for 8 hits, 4 RBI's and 3 runs scored as van der Meer went 4-5 by himself has he had his best game of the weekend at the plate. Trey Silvers and Gavin Tristan knocked in the Cards other two runs. Lamar got an unearned run in the first inning accounting for all 7 Lamar runs.

Lamar is 20-7 on the season and it's too bad the ACU series weren't conference games. Lamar returns home for 2 games. The face Nichols on Wednesday and Thursday. The series against Nichols are not conference games according to the LU schedule. Their next conference games will be next weekend in Corpus Christi against TAMU-CC for a 3 game series.

I plan to be in the stands Tuesday when we take on Nichols. Hope to see a lot of people there.

the cards are playing good ball right now.hopefully this is just a taste of the will davis era!!

I was wondering if he was having a positive effect on the team. This team didn't even make the conference tournament last year.

The conference schedule stinks as LU swept ACU and beat Nichols tonight in part of an eleven game win streak including the past four against two of the three worst teams in the conference and they don't count for conference games. Southeastern La and Sam on the other hand get both of these teams as conference games. Sam does not play Southeastern or McNeese and Southeastern doesn't play SFA in addition to Sam. Sam should have the inside track for the regulars season as the teams they're not playing are currently the conference leader and one of the teams tied for fourth. Southeastern is sitting in first right now but their four weeks of conference play has been against the four of the five at the bottom of the conference standings. Edited by geezer

Hopefully this team continues their success, but everyone internally knows that Jim Gilligan quit on the team halfway through the season last year. That's why they didn't make the tournament. Same team same talent. Being Jim Gilligan's last season, he should be Johnny positive and cradle the young Will Davis to do the same.

Time will tell with the Will Davis ERA! Hopefully he can recruit the same talent that this team has now......

Go Cards. Keep Winning!

I'm curious as to why all games against schools in our conference don't count as conference games. As Geezer pointed out the official conference schedule favors some teams while it penalizes others. I'd be curious to learn the rules or limitations in conference play that fosters a situation like this.

As for grousing about the Cards 11 game winning streak being against bad teams I would point out that is what good teams do, the dominate bad teams. The real shame is the ACU and Nichols series are non-conference.

BTW congrats to the Cards on the win last night on their 7-2 win.

My only reason for mentioning the quality of the opponents was in regards to the unbalanced conference schedule and its possible effect on where the Cards wind up in the regular season standings. Lamar will play six more games against potentially higher quality opponents than Sam or Southeastern. Long winning streaks are always a positive.
