LU Faces Demons, Looking for Third-Straight W

The Lamar University football team returned from its longest road trip of the season riding a two-game win streak. The Cardinals (2-3/2-1 Southland) will look to make it three wins in a row for the first time since the 1989 season Saturday when it steps on the field against Northwestern State. The Demons (1-4/0-3 SLC) are making their first trip to Beaumont since 2011.

The Demons found themselves in similar territory to the Red and White prior to last week. The Cardinals opened the season dropping three straight – all against nationally ranked opponents – but have bounced back by winning their last two contests. Northwestern State opened the season with four consecutive losses before getting in the win column last week against Kentucky Wesleyan.

"We have another big game this week," said LU head coach Ray Woodard. "Northwestern State is coming off their first win of the season, and we know how good that felt when we got ours. It made for a good week of practice, and it will be the same for them.

Milestones at hand for Lamar as they face Northwestern State

The Lamar football team has a chance to reach two program milestones today against Northwestern State.

The Cardinals haven't beat the Demons or started 3-1 in conference play since the program's return in 2010 and fell 48-35 in Natchitoches a season ago.

If Lamar beats Northwestern State, winless in Southland Conference play so far this season, the team will be on its way to knocking out more program milestones.

"We've had winning records," Woodard said. "We've beaten Top 25 teams, and we've done some things I'm very proud of, but we want to take that next step and be a contender.

Cards haven't been able to stop Northwestern State's running game. Between power running up the middle and cut backs Lamar defense is doing nothing to stop them. Lamar offense that I have seen so far is back to the run Kade up the middle, run Kade outside, incomplete pass and give the ball back. Edited by geezer

8:44 left in the first half and Lamar gets on the board with a field goal to get back to a seven point deficit. Can't really tell if the pass game problem is inconsistent throws from Earp or receivers dropping the ball, but LU has to get the pass game going.

Lamar gets the ball back on an interception by one of the linebackers with a really good effort and drive down inside the ten yard line with a 4th and one and the ball goes through Earp's hands on the snap and Northwestern St gets it and returns it to about the Lamar 38 yard line. Big mistake. I'm not sold on Earp, thought the Freshman looked decent a couple of weeks ago.

Northwestern St gets the 2nd half kickoff and goes about 77 yards in three plays to open up a 24-9 lead. Alex Ball got injured in the ACU game I believe. Harrington is out for the remainder of the game. He came out in street clothes with an air cast and crutches. Edited by geezer

Lamar gets a field goal after a good drive, but mistakes near the goal line cost them a probable touchdown again. Another bad snap, and two illegal procedure penalties. Score NWST 24 - LU 18 with about nine minutes to go. Edited by geezer
