It just makes you wonder why they can and why we don't

While at work, I was listening to the Central vs PNG game this past Friday night. Central had the ball and was running an empty backfield with 5 receivers. The QB was completing passes left, right, and in the middle. Makes you wonder, why them and not Lamar?

It is impossible, IMHO, to compare high school & college in any sport.

Skinny1 is correct because the number one difference is the talent of the entire team on the field or court. For every high school football team even at the largest schools only a fraction of the players move on to a college team. Very rarely do teams match up across the board and the good coaches know how to exploit the weaknesses of the other team. Particularly when a D-1 college team lines up the overall talent level is much closer to equal at all positions. That is not saying that there isn't a difference because the better programs still get the better players, but the difference between them is still less across all positions. For kids coming out of smaller high schools say 3A and less most of those players never lined up against their equal let alone someone who is better than them at their given position.

My point is, For most of the season, we've been chirping about the lack of a passing game and how the QB seems to lock on to one receiver and damn everyone else. A local high school is running the maximum passing formation but I can't recall Lamar ever going with a 5 receiver and empty backfield formation. Maybe they have so help an old memory out, anyone, anyone, Bueller.

ray wants to run come hell or high water. Probably only have have a few pass plays in the playbook.

I don't recall seeing an empty backfield this year but I know Lamar has run it in the past. They would set up with Harrington in the back field and then motion or shift him out. Problem is most of the time he was the receiver of the swing pass and had a defender on him almost immediately.

Its a lot things we wonder bout Lamar & the coaching. It wouldn't hurt to use empty backfield sometime with 5 wr. But as one stated the qb usually lock into one receiver instead of surveying field. I was eager to see how coach staff would use King given before kade got hurt most king plays was out of wildcat with kade but once kade got hurt king night on offense was mostly done. I still didn't get why kade ran wildcat cause it took pass option away. Now if they would reverse king & kade roll in wildcat it would put pass option on table given king played qb four yrs. ( but that's just my observation) Now I see they moved him to rb but all plays he ran as rb he was motioned out. If I can notice that by 2nd qt I know defensive coaches will notice it and key to it. Lu needs to do better job mixing it. I would love to see King actually take a handoff in backfield and see what he can do. Krautz & King taking handoff in backfield could be deadly & make up for lost of kade a lil bit more.

I am sure the reason for the back in motion is to help the QB read the secondary coverage, whether they are playing zone or man-to-man. The good teams will even try to mix the coverages on certain downs trying to disguise the possible mismatches. I really think King and Krautz could be more effective as slot receivers than running backs due to their size and speed. If they do release out of the backfield, they could be a tough coverage for linebackers, that works only if the QB has enough time to throw.

I think the same about King and Krautz. Put them in the slot and use them like Lamar's version of Cole Beasley. However, you would have to have a QB that is allowed to run through a few progressions and sometimes I feel that the QB isn't allowed to check down, just lock in or run.
