Central Arkansas wins their first round game 31-24 over Illinois State after trailing by up to 10 points through the first three quarters. I know the FCS rankings have been favorable to the Missouri Valley Conference all year there are several 7 & 4 teams that got overlooked to pick Illinois State at 6 & 5. But to make an argument against the pick UCA should have beaten them soundly. Nest up is Eastern Washington next Saturday at 3 PM Central Time. Sam Houston will play at 2 PM Central Time against Chattanooga who won easily today.

tried to watch UCA, but their damn red field and tv dont mix. watched sam kick ass in the 1st qtr. figured blowout, so i turned it off. turned back on, it was tied. Fricking moron of a coach for Chatt. they tied it up, early 3rd, ball on own 25 ish. ran fake punt..... didnt work, sam scored td

Chatt was big, but nothing special. sams def let spazoid qb look like heisman candidate. Briscoe didnt have a real good game, but still ...kids good. end of game , hurt his arm. dont know how bad. he coulda won a soccer award for the way he was acting..couldnt lift it, couldnt use it...comes back in and throws a pass... fu@k Sam

Chattanooga was to have a very good defense and played Alabama tough a few weeks ago. Thought Bristol had some sort of stinger in his shoulder/arm the way he was acting. Sam should be favored in their next game.

Sam Houston's quarterfinal game against James Madison will be aired on ESPN tonight at 6:00. Only loss between the 2 teams this season is a 56-28 loss by James Madison to North Carolina week 3.

When you add UCA's loss in the first round and Sam Houston's performance in the first half of this quarterfinal game you can see why the SLC only got two teams in.

We should be supporting our fellow Southland schools. Who am I kidding? The only way this could be better is if it was McNeese getting their butt kicked 42-zip.

That game was hard to watch...I really don't think Briscoe was healthy though. Way too many off target throws especially on 3rd down that normal from him. But JMU flat punches them in the mouth in all 3 phases.

As someone said earlier, this shows where the SLC is nationally.

Worse it shows how far LU has to go. Personally from what I see $200k isn't enough money to get and keep a quality head coach. The OC and DC at some of the Power 5 FBS schools are making up to $1m. I don't have any idea of what is average.

What does the Sam HC and OC make? Then we can compare apples to apples.

What Sam's coach makes isn't the test to me. I looked up North Dakota State and the base salary according to a Jan 2015 article is $262k with incentives that could take it to $366k. With five straight FCS titles and the number 1 seed for the 2016 playoffs they are the comparison that LU needs to look at. If LU were winning championships then their might be some interest from FBS conferences in the future, but as a middle of the pack team in a slightly above middle of the pack conference the possibilities to move to FBS is probably pretty much of a pipe dream. If LU wants to be the best then they have to match and beat the best.

I understand your reasoning and there is nothing wrong with it. My take is that there is only so much money available for LU football expenses and each student's slice of that amount is near the gagging point. With the money already allocated, Lamar should be able to get a coach capable of taking the program to the next level, which to me, is consistent winning seasons, more bang in the Southland, and more fans at the games.

I was happy for SAM to make the FCS quarterfinals. It's too bad they didn't play better. I share the concerns about the next coach at LU. I just want a guy who can take the program up a few levels.

I agree that the students are paying about all they can afford, and the point is really what it will take to be at the top and stay there, even for a smaller school. Don't know how athletics is funded in other schools and other states but that is an example of what the cream of the crop is doing. Also I can tell you on the basketball side Wichita State's big money backers ponied up around $3m a year to keep Gregg Marshall. That's what it took to keep him from leaving for a Power 5 conference in basketball. Maybe Lamar gets lucky and finds a coach that just loves Southeast Texas, has the talent to coach where ever he wants and just wants to be in Beaumont and win, but it is highly unlikely.

NDSU came back with 10 third quarter points to tie the game, then JMU gets a field goal early in the fourth quarter to give NDSU their first fourth quarter deficit since the 2014 championship final. Should be a good end to this game. Edited by geezer

JMU gets another touchdown midway through the fourth quarter and put an end to the NDSU streak of FCS Championships. Good luck to JMU in the championship game. They will play the winner of Eastern Washington and Youngstown St.
