Looks like the majority of the officially signed players are for positions that were weaknesses this past season and I am glad than none of them are listed as Athletes. While I recognize that sometimes players change positions once they get into college, I think it is important that they are recruited and signed to play a position that they have demonstrated excellence at in high school. Seemed like Woodard always signed several players listed as athletes and while high school excellence doesn't necessarily translate to college excellence, expecting a player to come in and provide excellence when he isn't listed at a position always seemed questionable to me. Again, all in all this looks like a good start for next year.

I was honestly surprised that we signed as many as we did. I figured most of the JC guys would sign and knew that Norman had been in on an official visit very recently so there was a good shot he would sign even though he hadn’t publically committed. I really didn’t expect all of our known HS commits to sign thinking they might hold out for a potential FBS offer. The only known commit to not sign was Tyler JC Running Back JT Smith but he is a May graduate so he should sign in Feb. The Beaumont Enterprise posted the live stream of the press conference which can still be seen on Facebook and Schultz address the later signing period and said to expect very few signees. He withheld the approximate number but said he knew exactly how many scholarships are left and having all of these guys sign now gives the staff a more defined picture of what needs to be addressed in the next 6 weeks. One thing is for sure about Schultz is he keeps everything close to the vest and doesn’t divulge very much information.

Glad to see the big DL signees. We also signed 1 center and we need at least 1 more as we lost both from 2017 season- Oubre thru graduation, and Vongor has left the program from what I understand to play at a NAIA college in his hometown. Looking forward to seeing these Juco kids and the Redshirt Freshmen in the spring game.

Lamar football tweeted out tonight that Tyler JC running back JT Smith has signed. Per his Hudl he is a May grad and by my interpretation of the signing rules, the early period for JC guys is only for those that will be enrolling mid year. Not sure if that means Smith got his classes in order to be able to transfer mid year or if there is something else I’m missing here. Either way he has signed.

Hate to see Vongor go, he got some good playing time this year. But business is business.

In regards to Mann, it appeared in his video he was always kicking with a strong wind at his back. I would like to see him kicking with and against the the wind... Just to put things in perspective.

Burriss signed with Florida Atlantic in 2017 but needed to complete some JUCO course work. According to him, a dropped class ended up affecting his GPA and he was denied admission. He used his redshirt season to get everything right and still planned to enroll at FAU. However, his relationship with FAU recently soured and he opened his recruitment back up.

so who is signing next week?we should have some kids locked up by now.

Kicker Jospeh Mann is the only commit I know of at this point. 2-Star WR Levar Gumms will be a name to watch...he was in town for an official visit last weekend. Coach Schultz said at the press conference of the early signing day that the remainder of the class would be a small group.
