Cardinals Prep for Southland Opener

There is a different buzz in the air despite the fact it's just the third week of the season. Even though the Lamar University football program is still in the early stages of the 2017 season, the intensity has picked as the Cardinals prepare for the Southland Conference opener at Northwestern State Saturday.

For the Cardinals, the third week of the season has felt like a new beginning of sorts after a turbulent preseason and start to the year. Prior to Hurricane Harvey hitting the Texas coast, the Cardinals had the majority of their preseason workouts delayed, shortened or canceled due to thunderstorms. Despite Mother Nature's best attempts, the Cardinals continued to press forward and sit 1-1 on the season after the first two games.

The Cardinals will look to turn their 1-1 record into a modest two-game win streak Saturday when it steps on the field at Turpin Stadium. Big Red will face a Northwestern State squad whose record does not accurately reflect the talent level of the team. The Demons are winless after opening the season with games at Louisiana Tech and Grambling State, but the final outcome in those games doesn't tell the whole story.

Lamar gets a 48 yard run for a touchdown to tie the game at 7 with a little over five minutes left in the first quarter. Offense has looked decent so far. Edited by geezer

Following a dumb penalty on the Lamar bench after a stop that would have made NWST possibly have to punt, instead they get an automatic first down and two plays later score their 2nd touchdown with a little under two minutes left in the first quarter.

This is pathetic!!! So far we have sucked in all 3 aspects of the game. We have a 100 yard rusher in the first half and we only have 7 points. We can't throw the ball, therefore we can only run. The defense has had it moments, but I really think it has been NW st inability to execute that has bailed us out. We do not look prepared!!! I am frustrated watching this. Let's see if we can make the neede adjustments. Thank goodness NW st is on pace to set some kind of penalty record or this might be a blowout. The one bright spot has been King.

Penalties have been a key in this game both as NWST has had so many offensive penalties that have helped keep them from having more offense and possibly more points. On the other side the major penalties on the Cards have kept drives going for NWST and lead to scores for them. Lamar defense comes up with a big play to get a fumble, recovery and return for touchdown with ten seconds left in the first half to close the gap to a one score deficit. NWST 21 - Lamar 14.

I write to say the defense just scored a TD!!! As crappy as we have played, we are in this game. Coaching will be a key here!!! If we can make the adjustments we need we can pull this out. I think we have the talent, we just haven't been able to execute. I hope we can play to our talent level and win this game.

Been out of pocket for the first half but had been keeping up with it on my phone at dinner. I ended up putting my phone away because every update seemed worse than the previous. Hopefully the momentum from the defensive TD will carry on to the 2nd half and the coaches make the right adjustments.

Lamar offense gets a 1st down then has to punt and a low snap causes the punter to field the ball with his knee down. Northwestern St. takes over inside the 25. Edited by KABrother88

This has been disappointing through 3 quarters. We are undisciplined. That is something I felt the coaching staff would take care of. Some really dumb penalties. This is a team of similar talent. Our best offense seems to be defensive turnovers. We still can't throw. We can't stop the NW st offense. They have outplayed us thus far. This sucks because we can beat this team. They can execute and we can't.

Wont say it would make a difference but the game is in Nach. Agree that the Cards are hurting themselves with unforced errors and penalties that have are not part of contact during the play. Edited by geezer

The most important thing to do when you're using the uptempo offense is to avoid 3 and outs which Lamar can't do right now. Went for it on 4th and 1 near midfield but couldn't convert. Lamar defense comes up with an interception however

Defense holds again thanks to the Demons' 20th penalty of the game. Lamar takes over at their own 22 with 3:40 left down by 7.

OMG!!! Ugly football doesn't EVEN begin to describe this. I am SO DAMN PISSEDafter watching this I need to wait until tomorrow to go on my tirade! For now, I'll just say congrats to NWSU on their first conference win in over a year. They finally found an SLCteam they could beat, their 47 fans in the stands should be proud!

Uh oh, I hope we don't start missing the "good 'ol days" under Woodard! How do you lose to a team that starts the game with three straight false starts on offense? And what's the deal with the bad punts? Maybe Woodard is secretly coaching this team!
