Waited to reply to this thread until I calmed down. I have to believe Schultz gives complete autonomy to his OC and DC. I hope so anyway. It's dumb to continue to do so at this point, but it's the only way I can feel good about a turn around next year. I CAN NOT see how the coaches can watch the film and continue putting this game plan out there week after week on both sides of the ball. We're getting pushed around on the line on both sides of the ball. Paid coaches are supposed to game plan to their strengths AND weaknesses. They aren't changing anything. They are being hard headed and then some. The talent evaluation isn't the best either. Hard headed here too. There's no adjustments being made. I could go on and on but won't. There's enough talent on this team to win 3, 4, or with luck 5 games this year but it isn't being utilized to the strengths we do have. It's awesome we have another "dual threat" QB committed. That's going amazingly this year. Dual threat usually means can't throw the football very good but athletic at the FCS division. Otherwise they'd be at Alabama, Louisville, etc. Recruit a real QB and sling it. WTH. They have one true QB but he doesn't get a sniff after trying to pull their bacon out of the searing pan last year due to injuries. Did decent actually. Best arm on the team. Try teaching wrapping up on defense jeez. My last request is to please, please sign 8 Juco offense and defense lineman. This is embarrassing.

I believe we have the talent to win a few SLC games. I am not convinced we have enough to win the conference, but we should beat UIW and we didn’t. I also think we have enough talent to win more than one game this season. Last year we went through 5 or 6 QB’s and lost our great RB. I could swallow that. What we have this season is a coach forcing this crap down our throat and it’s not working. UIW was slashing our defense the way Clemson would be if we were playing them, but we weren’t. This was a winless UIW team. I feel sorry for the seniors and even the juniors. They are not going to win. Last year, I felt that we had a chance to win or at least be competitive against everyone except maybe UH. I understood this. This year, I feel like are offense and defense are gimmicks. It’s like running trick plays and counting on them to win our games. I am a season ticket holder and I do not like this.

There is enough talent on the team, they should not be cellar dwellers in the SLC. If players aren't executing & taking wrong angles after 4-5 games, where does the blame lie? Coaches get little credit for the Wins & All the blame for the losses. My question is, when does the Scholarship money starts to decline? Evidently too many on full Scholarship, I would be cutting percentages based on performance. Produce or take a pay cut. Same goes for the Staff

Woah...BigCam, lol, this post...it almost sounds like some "crazy" thing I'd say! I'm actually mad at myself for never really looking at it that way.

Offensively, I don't like it. I thought Allen gave us a spark in the 3rd quarter. I missed the first half but it must have been pretty ugly. Defensively, I'm at a loss...looked like we blitzed quite a bit, which I like but it seemed like they picked them up almost every time?!? I wasn't paying close enough attention to see if we were running the exact same blitz every time or what but to give up another 245 yards rushing to a winless team who was averaging 72 yards per game. Ouch.

Ditto on all fronts. I would love to have the luxury of having a legitimate dual threat QB but like you said, the ones that can actually run AND throw are going to the big schools. So why not focus on recruiting someone who can throw? If he has a little mobility fine, but a QB HAS to be able to throw. Our passing game looked a little better with Allen. Looks like he locks onto one receiver too much but he looks like he throws better than Colbert. On the "dual threat" QB that committed. I watched his huddle videos, he may be dual threat in high school but from what I see he's "zero" threat at the FCS level. Looks like he has below average arm strength and it looks like he might run a 4.8...maybe.

I agree. Hudl film didn't impress me. Lefty with a loopy windup and doesn't look to have the speed of Allen or Colbert. Allen should be the starter this week imho, better of the two.

Lol, man this is hard to watch. I didn't make it to the game, but my Wife says it was much worse being in attendance. She hasn't missed a game in our Son's 3 yrs on the Team.

I never allowed my Son as a young kid to play any sport for the so called "Best" Teams in Beaumont. The reasoning behind that was because I wanted him to experience the highs & the lows that come with competing, but at no time when the lows come do we ever quit competing, so later if he's ever on a great team he would appreciate it. I said that to say this, everyone is good in HS, many of these kids have played on winning programs their entire lives or have been some of the best in their sport most of their lives. Now they aren't in that environment they don't know how to keep fighting. The guy on the other Team is just as strong, fast, bigger etc

What are you going to do now?? That stacked Team, nor stellar Coaching Staff can help you now. I want to know what criteria these recruiters are looking for when they offer these kids. We certainly have some talent, but some are head scratchers. Lastly, if you can't get the Best talent, you certainly need a Staff that can Coach the kids up. I know it's the first year with this staff, I just hope the kids haven't given up.

Come on LU!!

You play with what you got and it's not like Woodard left a lot. As for firing a couch, It's their first year; not gonna happen and shouldn't happen. Yeah, it seems that there are a lot of subpar areas of performance but the kids are playing hard. Defensively, we are just overwhelmed on the DL and I don't like the whole scheme. I suspect that the DC will be replaced for next year. Until then, hunker down and hang on.

Where did all those guys from one of the top recruiting classes in the nation (a year ago) go?

Quite a few left for various reasons. Homesick, grades, not happy with the coaches, change in staff, etc. A lot of them are redshirt freshman looking for playing time. Some are contributing.

Where did all those guys from one of the top recruiting classes in the nation (a year ago) go?

Here is a breakdown of that class. I have further broken it down into players still with the team and those that are not. I have also bolder the players who has some kind of star ranking that factors into the national team rankings

Still With Team:

QB - Adam Morse - played out of necessity last season. Taking a RS this season?

RB - Markell Hawthorne - RS’d last season. Has not seen the field this season.

2* RB - Kendrick King - played WR last season and moved to RB this season. Has been the starting RB every game so far.

2* WR - Marcus Daggs - JC transfer played in all 11 games in 2016 and had 24 catches for 256 yards and 1 TD. In 2017 he has 10 catches for 101 yards and 1 TD in 6 games.

WR - Caisen Sullivan - RS’d in 2016 and hasn’t recorded a reception in 2017.

TE - Mason Sikes - RS’s in 2016 and has seen action this season.

2* OL - Chase Bridgeman - RS’s in 2016 and is the #2 C behind Sr Matt Oubre.

2* DL - Daniel Crosley - played in all 11 games as a true freshman and had 3 starts. Record 42 tackles and 3 sacks in 2016. Has 20 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 6 games this season. #2 right DE

DL - James “Lucky” Jeffery - played in 10 games as a true freshman and had 11 tackles and 1 sack. Has 14 tackles in 6 games this year serving as the #2 NT. He really only comes in in passing situations as he’s not a gap filling NT type player.

2* LB - David Crosley - RS’d in 2016. Currently leading the team with 45 tackles in 6 games. #1 at Mike LB position

LB Tanner Kanteman - JC transfer was 3rd in the team with 62 tackles and 2 sacks in 2016. Was listed as the 2 deep starter for weeks 1 and 2 but did not even appear in either game. Injured maybe?

2* LB - Cameron Minger - played in 3 games in 2016 before going down with an injury. Has played in 5 games in 2017 with 2 tackles.

LB - Del’Chaun Rushing - played in all 11 games with 22 tackles in 2016. Has played in 5 games in 2017 with 6 tackles. #2 at Card LB position.

3* DB - Caleb Abrom - played in 8 games with 6 tackles in 2016. 18 tackles, 1 INT and 4 PBUs in 6 games this season as a starting CB.

3* DB Jaylon Bowden - played in all 11 games as a JC transfer and recorded 33 tackles and 1 FF. In 2017 he’s recorded 29 tackles, 1/2 sack, 1 PBU & 2 FF in 4 games. When healthy has been the starter at weak side safety.

2* DB - Shyler Staton - played in 10 games last season with 3 starts. Had 25 tackles and 3 PBUs as a true freshman. In 2017 has 28 tackles in 6 games as a starting CB

DS - Christian Langston - RS’d in 2016 and has served as the back-up DS this season.

No Longer With Team:

QB - Clayton Turner - transfer from Miami that was moved back to WR (where he played at Miami) after he didn’t challenge at the QB position. Left team in the offseason.

RB - Austin Krautz - became the starting RB after Kade went down last season. Left the team in the offseason.

2* WR - Shane Hudson - RS’s in 2016 and no longer listed on the roster

OL - Kanon Mackey - played some in 2016 but left the team in the offseason.

OL - Trevon Simpson - RS’s in 2016 and left team in the offseason.

2* DL Demontrai Lewis - did not qualify academically out of Kilgore JC

DL - Trey Towery - left the team like a week after arriving to Beaumont.

2* LB - Jarett Carpenter - played in 5 games mostly on special teams in 2016. Record 2 tackles. Left the team in the offseason.

LB - Mike Coats - was injured in 2016 and left the team in the offseason.

DB - Jalen Barnes - transfer from Texas Tech started the season in academic problems then was lost for the season with an injury. Left team in the offseason.

DB - Blake George - played in 9 games last season with 7 tackles and 1/2 sack. Left team in the offseason.

P - Mitchell Gray - was not academically eligible after moving from Australia in 2016. Left team during the offseason.

Overall breakdown:

Total Class = 29

Still With Team = 17

Listed In Latest 2-Deep = 11

Left Team After 1 Season or Less= 12

That last number is the big one...one thing it takes to build a successful program is lack of player turnover and that is something Lamar has struggled with since the return.

All this being said, majority of these guys are still Sophomore and RS-Freshman...yes they can be “counted on” to contribute but they shouldn’t be “depended on”. We are having to depend on these guys due to attrition in previous recruiting classes. I did some research last year I believe and if I remember correctly we were only retaining something like 40% of our HS recruiting classes for 3 seasons and like 25% for a full 4 years of eligibility. You can not build a winner if you are continually running underclassman and walk-ons out against upperclassman.

As always, excuse research KA

I wasn't aware of the turnover throughout the program. Unfortunately this isn't the reason we are one of the worst FCS programs in the Country. Play calling, suspect tackling & QB play are hurting the program more than anything IMO

Again, excellent data you provided. Can you go to team meetings & help breakdown important facets of the game?? LOL

Seriously though

Don’t get me wrong I know there is so much more to building a winning program than just minimizing attrition. If your entire signing class stays for the entirety of their eligibility doesn’t mean they will develop. That all starts with evaluation when the player is a prospect and seeing if he has the “potential” to develop further than he is now. That is to develop both physically and athletically. You might have a lineman that is undersized but can dominate in HS. However, if he doesn’t have the frame to grow in a college strength and conditioning program then he might not be successful at the next level due to sheer physics. If kid has all the athleticism and just lacks technique but is what is considered not “coachable” then he might not develop into his potential.

Next, the coaches have to be able to identify what each player’s strengths and weakness are. Once those are identified, the coaches have to be able to put the player in positions and situations to maximize the strengths and minimize the weakness. On the flip side of that, opposing coaches pick up on these strengths and weaknesses when they watch film and will game plan to attempt to exploit the weakness and avoid the strength. The coaches then have to make in game adjustments to flip the script so to speak.

I mentioned the attrition because it’s been an ongoing problem I’ve noticed. I have seen some good players come into the program only to leave within a year or 2. If they were to develop, they weren’t here long enough to reach their potential.

I would gladly do anything to help this program move forward in anyway I can. That’s what I try to do with the recruiting stuff I post. As bad as it sounds, the recruiting game now is a big show. A lot of kids like the attention and if we can have a fan forum that gives them that support and show that Lamar is a desirable destination then it could only help if they are on the fence.

Sorry for the long winded post lol

No apology needed. I hope LU brass are aware of the people that truly care about the program. There are a few of you on here & have been here some time that contribute tremendously. I've only been around 3 yrs, I plan on being around for yrs to come. I won't bite my tongue because I'm a fan & a father of a player on the Team. I've told him all Season he needs to step up. Not one player stinks, the entire program Sux right now. Can only go up from here. The rest of the SLC would love to see LU remain where they are. It's up to the guys in the Fieldhouse to change their current course. One play at a time(would say one game at a time, but we must take baby steps) Lol

With the way the team is doing, how is the players morale? Its got to be shot....

I'm sure there will be more transfers out unless something changes

Honestly, that turnover doesn't sound that horrible to me. Consider the time it takes to balance practice/games with school and a bit of "social" time. Then you throw in the fact that you may not get much playing time. Anyway, I wonder what other programs experience.

Very wise. It sucks to lose and often times it's too easy to quit/give up. But, to hang in there and keep busting your butt in spite of the losing, well that's real gut check.
