LU Basketball

My guess is none of those caliber schools will come here. Nothing for them to gain by doing that.

And to clarify what I mean, with the exception of Tech (if they are still good) we could very well beat them. And you know we can’t be paying them much to come here.

The dynamics of college basketball has changed too much since the 80s for LU to average 6K+ a game and bring in good opponents like Wichita State, Villanova and LSU. LU let the program fall apart and it will never return to being a good mid-major like it was briefly during the Tubbs and Foster years. Instead of taking the path of TCU or Louisiana Tech to slowly climb to better conferences, LU instead cancelled it's football team and slithered back into the SLC.

We even beat Villanova when they were coming off a national championship. I still remember beating USC in the Montagne--they were really unhappy--didn't give us the respect I thought we'd earned. Now we have goals of reaching the Southland Conference Tournament! Nonetheless, I was part of 6K+ and I'm part of the 1K or 2K we get these days. You can't build it up if people don't come and people won't come unless you're successful.

It will be a long time until Lamar can get those kinds of schools to come to Beaumont but there shouldn't be a reason why the non-conference home dates are filled with lower division schools. With all the ranking systems in play today it only hurts the chances for better post season opportunities. Of course you still have to win. Should be able to get teams from the WAC, Mid-America and other lower tier conferences for home and home series. Knight was a bad recruiter but he managed to bring better teams to the Montagne. Get USL, Ark State and more of that level of schools.

Again the odds of those schools (USL, Arkansas State, or any Sunbelt school that is legitimately hoping for a post season bid) is slim to none. Possibly we could trade a 1 home for 2 or 3 on the road but I don't see why they'd come here. They have nothing to gain. I'd love to see USL vs Lamar again but they were like 28-5 last year and I think maybe top 25 part of last year. A loss to us almost ensures no at large bid. Either we'd have to be really crappy or semi relevant again for them to come here. It sucks but I think that's just the way it is. Of course, I could be totally wrong, maybe Price didn't try to get that level of teams to come play here, idk. That said, yes there are a bunch of better opponents that likely would come here (rice, utsa, utep, lower tier sunbelt schools; ohio valley conference teams, or patriot league, pioneer, southern league, bottom tier Missouri valley, etc)

Don't forget, Arkansas State and USL.

Cancelling the football program was by far the worst decision ever made for LU. It set us behind 30+ years....and can't be undone.

USL plays at Mcneese, Sela and Uno. maybe it takes picking up a phone and calling

Look at last year. Playing 4 non-division 1 teams means almost winning 20 games (19-14) against barely being above .500 (15-14). With attendance less than 2000 it's easier on the budget too I assume. Looks like an easy way to pad the win column without actually putting a better team on the court.

so , how exactly does basketball scheduling work? you gotta pay? or switch off 1 home 2 away?

sfa has bama and la tech at home....( bama game is a coaching connection game)

I checked to make sure that Bama at SFA was a true home game. Seems like I remember SFA playing some power conference teams in Houston in the past and calling it a home game. Gonzaga has done this for several years playing games in Seattle (nearlyT 300 miles from campus) to get top teams to come play them. They have a strong enough reputation now that they can get some of those games on campus. I think they will always play one or two games in Seattle for recruiting purposes and I'm sure they have a significant alumni base there.

Crow tastes like shit. But I’ll take it. Maybe I’m just a woosie. But, if I were La Tech or Bama or USL I’d NEVER play any of those games. Maybe with SFA you could argue they’ve been good and have had success in the tournament. Why USL would play at McNeese and SE La??? I guess Marlin is 100% sure of the outcome. But kudos to those schools for doing that

Tournaments at “neutral” sites are different. Gonzaga is definitely MAJOR basketball. But, good lord, it’s not 1980. We aren’t in the same hemisphere as Gonzaga.

Not saying Lamar is currently anywhere near the program Gonzaga is today but pointing out what they did to get major schools to come west to play them. Also as I stated I think in the past SFA has played games in Houston. I hate playing multiple lower division programs at home.

Practice started yesterday so what will this group be like? 2 SR. 2 SO. 2 FR. 7 JR. Interesting mix as four of the juniors practiced with the team last year so there is a core of eight players that know the system and the expectations of the coaching staff. Pre-conference schedule has seven road games five of which are definitely against teams from stronger conferences so anything more than two wins will be a good showing in my opinion. The home pre-conference schedule has four sub D-1 games and two games against SWAC opponents. The Cards need to win five of those games at a minimum and should win all six to be considered a potential top four team in conference. Will either of the two seniors, Garth or Nzeakor be the mvp of this team or will it be one the transfers that were with the program last year? Granted this season hasn't even started yet but will the coaching staff focus on finding two freshman to replace the seniors or will they be focused on the positions and find the best talent period?

It's game time and I'm excited but at the same time I'm glad football is still relevent. Looking forward to see what this years team looks like. As a long distance fan the internet broadcasts are important to me. Enjoy listening to KLVI but the radio can't supplant the video, no matter how bad the announcers are.
