geezer Posted November 18, 2019 Posted November 18, 2019 (edited) Men travel to Utah Valley this coming Thursday at 8:00 PM Beaumont time. We can get a preview of what may be coming as Utah Valley plays Kentucky tonight on ESPN2. Utah Valley is a fairly experienced team with three seniors and five juniors. They have good size with a 7'0" senior center, a 6'11" sophomore and only two players under 6'3". Utah Valley is currently 3-1 going into their game at Kentucky. geezer Posted November 19, 2019 Author Posted November 19, 2019 Watched the first half and my take is that Utah Valley will be very tough to beat at home. Their point guard is a slasher that like to kick the ball out to the three point line, but might be subject to the defense making him attempt to finish instead of kicking it out. Their senior forward #24 is a good three point shooter even with a hand in his face. Defensively UV plays man or matchup zone with quite a bit of pressure on the ball. The big seems slow and subject to committing fouls when the other team attacks him at the basket. Likes to block shots. UV stayed close to Kentucky through out the first half. As far Lamar vs Kentucky, Kentucky is only playing seven players as they have several out with injuries so I'm not sure that Lamar will see a similar Kentucky team depending on the extent of their injuries. geezer Posted November 19, 2019 Author Posted November 19, 2019 2nd half UV forced Kentucky to play zone. The guard that I thought was a slasher also showed he can shoot the three, six to eight feet beyond the three point line. The dude shot 5-12 on deep threes. UVU defeated UAB on the road, whom Lamar plays after Kentucky. Quote
lamarfan360 Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 Utah Valley lost by eight to Kentucky. They should be a tough for Lamar. Quote
SportsGuy Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 Utah Valley lost by eight to Kentucky. They should be a tough for Lamar. I'm afraid Lamar will lose by 20+ in this one. I don't share the same optimism as everyone else! Quote
geezer Posted November 20, 2019 Author Posted November 20, 2019 Compared to a thread from the summer, I am optimistic about the season. I think this team has potential to compete for a top three finish in the conference race. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see a big loss at UVU and an even bigger loss at Kentucky. I am hoping they can come back and play UAB close and mayber even pull that one out. Don't really expect a win at Texas Southern either. As I said at the beginning of the thread, the UVU game should give a pretty good indicator of what to expect for the next two games. Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 Lamar starts Jefferson, Holmes, Sullivan, Atwood and Buster. Through the first four minutes Lamar has played solid defense and have held UVU scoreless. Lamar up 6-0 at the first timeout. Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 UVU comes out of the first timeout and goes on a tear. The Cards are taking poor shots, allowing UVU to move easily in the transition game and get clean open shots which they have hit easily. UVU uses three treys to move out to a 14-6 lead over three minutes. Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 Lamar responds to the extent that it stopped the bleeding by getting back on defense and hitting a few shots. At the under eight minute time out UVU leads 17-13. Quote
lamarfan360 Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 UVU leads at the 3:26 media timeout 26-22. Lamar has cut the lead to 4 pts. Quote
lamarfan360 Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 What's up with Atwood? Lamar is down by one with our best out of the game for most of the first half. Score 34-33, LU down one. Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 (edited) Atwood picked up two fouls and Price has held him on the bench to protect him from picking up a third. Atwood, Jefferson and Buster all have two fouls. Holmes has three. Edited November 22, 2019 by geezer Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 Lamar has stayed in the game with second chance points (Sullivan is the leading scorer with 10) and points off of turnovers. Quote
lamarfan360 Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 With 12:59 left Lamar is winning 45-41. Quote
coachacola Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 47-41 LU and Sullivan has a double double! Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 Cards have continued to play good defense other than about a four minute period of the first half. Lamar has held UVU to only around 30% field goal percentage. Sullivan' play is a real nice surprise. Quote
lamarfan360 Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 Hopefully the Cards will finish strong! Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 Lamar up by ten points at the under eight timeout. UVU has shot very poorly in the second half, but they have a couple of streak shooters from deep. At this point that or poor execution against late pressure is my fear. Quote
lamarfan360 Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 65-60, LU leads with under 4:00 left. Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 UVU closes the gap to five points at the under four minute timeout. We'll see if LU can hold on. Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 Lamar still has a five point lead (68-63) with under a minute left to play Quote
geezer Posted November 22, 2019 Author Posted November 22, 2019 (edited) Lamar wins 74-68. This is a big win for a young club. Cards closed the game out at the free throw line as they did not get a field goal over the last two and half minutes, but also did a good job of controlling UVU forcing them to use a fair amount of time on offense and not giving many open shots to UVU in the second half. Sullivan lead the Cardinals in scoring with 17 by Atwood with 13 all in the second half. Edited November 22, 2019 by geezer Quote
