These kids better watch out getting into the transfer portal. In FBS football 987 players entered the portal with approximately 600 maximum scholarships available. So at least 300 just gave up their opportunity to play under scholarship in the FBS and FCS. They do have options going to D2 and NAIA. D3 is non-scholarship. Western Kentucky led the NCAA in football transfers at 21 players, Univ. of Tennessee was 2nd at 19 players. This does not include graduate transfers.

not basketball, but yall know where Michael Lawson and Mason Sykes ended up after doing the portal? Western Illinois, the doormat of the MVFC.

Lawson wanted to be closer to his daughter (in California??? )

and Sykes, after not playing at Boise, chose Western Illinois for the chance to win the national championship. At Western Illinois???

Softball. Kendall Talley is riding the pine for the Cajuns

quotation marks dont work either.

$150K is a very high price for a D2 coach to be making.

By looking at WTAMU record, they run a high powered offense. Their attendance in the past 3 years (not this year), was ~1400 at Canyon versus Lamar at ~2100. This was the 3rd highest average in D2.

2100 in Canyon with offense (offense puts butts in seats almost as much as winning does... winning WITH offense puts a lot of butts in seats) is about 4000 in Beaumont. And if you're putting butts in seats, the money will be there to pay him a lot more than $150K.

Tex Gator is doing something different. Maybe a desktop? Tried iPad with auto correct and manually. Did not work. WHATS HIS SECRET?

I'm just a baller... shot-caller...

What I was afraid of; Kasen Harrison is entering the transfer portal. Geez, he was on his way to being the best point guard in the history of Lamar University. Now, he is just history.

Wow! That's a big jump... may I introduce you to: Matt Sundblad.... Atiim Browne... and ummm, Alvin Brooks?

I stated he was he was on his way to being the best PG. He was not there yet. But he had a better freshman year than those you mentioned. Alvin Brooks was a JC transfer having played his freshman year at Sam Houston.

Even in those 2 years, he accomplished a LOT. Being on "All America" lists is a big accomplishment, even with only being there 2 years.

But, I'd like to redirect back to the matter at hand- getting a new coach.

Up to three players that have entered the transfer portal. Bennett entered today.

Bennett might have trouble finding a home. Did start but showed limited outside shooting production. Would not have started at ACU, SAM, or SFA. That said, not sure any of the Lamar starters would start for those schools.

Another former D1 coach looking for a job is Jim Ferry, former interim coach at Penn State & was a head coach at 2 other programs. He may be like Menzies a little long in the tooth. Ferry is 61 & Menzies is 59. Price is 65 & Rick Pitino is 69. All too old for my liking.

Here is my current top 10 coaching candidates:

1. Greg Marshall (Wichita State)

2. Tommy Conner (Utah)

3. Luke Murray (Louisville)

4. Tom Brown (West Texas A&M)

5. Russ Springman (Oral Roberts)

6. Austin Claunch (Nicholls State)

7. Alvin Brooks III (Baylor)

8. Archie Miller (Indiana)

9. Jordan Mincey (Florida)

10. Ulric Maligi (Texas Tech)

I say current since it seems to change daily as more coaches become available and others on the list get hired. Most are young coaches with the exception of Marshall (57).

Norman Bellard was the point guard following Brooks. 2 solid point guards back to back.

Most schools used the vacancies to sign juco or freshman since there are scholarship limitations on total scholarships. Those limitations apply to active players and redshirts. Limit for FBS football is 85 scholarships. Even if the kid is on academic scholarship, his scholarship counts against the limit.

Limit of 13 for men, 15 for women

Limit of 13 for men, 15 for women

This is the rundown of scholarship limits imposed by the NCAA as it applies to Lamar.

FCS Football - 63

MBB - 13.0

WBB - 15.0

Baseball - 11.7

Women Soccer - 14.0

Softball - 12.0

Men Tennis - 4.5

Women Tennis - 8.0

Women Volleyball - 12.0

Men Track & Field, CC - 12.6

Women Track & Field, CC - 18.0

Men Golf - 4.5

Women Golf - 6.0

Lamar can choose to give less scholarships to men to offset the football number as per Title IX, but with the new federal regulation allowing males to participate in women sports , this begins a huge court case to protect women athletics.

Keep the debate, and any discussion, of transgendered athletes to another thread. That isn't what this thread is about.
