Where do we see changes in the depth chart?

Alright, since the release of the depth chart at the end of the spring season there have been quite a few additions to this team. I think all told Lamar might have something like 25 new scholarship players so this will be a team that will look drastically different from what it looked like even in spring training.

Here is a list of signees from February:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Lamar_Cardinals_football_team#Before_the_season

(note exclude brock wempa he was signed later than february)

We've also signed:

OL Brock Wempa 6-2 310 lbs Jr.

TE Cory Soto 6-8 255 Jr.

QB Dillon Barrett 6-5 Fr.

WR Kevin Johnson 6-1 So

DE Joseph Okafor 290 So.

WR B.J. Oyefeso 6-4 215 Jr.

That's alot of new faces and most of those guys are at playing weight.

I think the most obvious guy who will start is Kevin Johnson, he looks like he can be a stud WR he produced well in Oklahoma States spring game. Okafor certainly has the size to start but we will have to wait and see since their was a bit of a question about his motivation. Brock Wempa should also easily find a place on the line because he's got such size and Woodard seemed really excited about this particular guy.

There are a handful of freshman I could see possibly making it to the field as well. Gladney or Nelson at WR, Luke Campbell at OL, any of the Running Backs have a fair shot at that position. I also think we might see some surprises.

What do you guys think, where do you see changes?

So we have probably signed over 31 players, I just counted everyone and not including the RB from Waco we have 31. I think maybe one or two guys from our initial signing class might not make it here, seems like we didn't have that many scholarships to give.

Keep in mind Brock Wempa was already on the depth chart as the #2 behind the starter (?).

That's odd, for some reason I thought Wempa was signed after spring practices.

I also forgot to account for all of the Juco guys already on the team, Longino, Nashon Davis, Tyrus McGlothen, and Courtlin Thompson. They were already on campus when the depth chart was made.

The coaches did a great job of getting some late good talent and signing them. I can't wait to see the depth chart after 2 a days...

So did we sign Darrell Harris or did that not work out?

As far as I can tell, he signed with the Cardinals on February 21. Here's a tweet that I found from one of the guys at 1660espn (Central Texas). The tweet was re-tweeted by Tyler Hedrick with KCEN tv in Waco.

David Smoak@DavidSmoak

Waco RB Darrell Harris has signed with Lamar University, 310 carries, 2,592 yds, 24 TD. Great pick up for the Cardinals.

There were also several posts on BRI that he did as well as an article in the Waco newspaper (Waco Tribune) and mention in one of Bob West's articles (Port Arthur News). He was also mentioned in the thread about freshmen showing up on campus. I think at that time he had not arrived.

One caveat: I'm pretty far removed from things living in Houston and am just going off of what I read. Maybe the true "insiders" can confirm if things have changed since February. He is on the BRI version of the roster which includes this year's recruits.

What happened to RB Duenta Byrd. I did some research on him, i believe he was a walkon that Woodard immediately added to the team in the spring.

The only sources i can find on him are Beaumont Enterprise articles back in the Spring. '

??

I added him to the roster. I couldn't find any background info on him though, all I know is that he's a sophomore running back.

Byrd was a walk-on and so we wont really know about him being on the final roster until the fall. Teams are only aloud 100 player rosters with I believe 10 more players on a scout team.

Lamar hasn't always put the scout team players on the roster, although some schools do.

According to the walk-on policy on Lamarcardinals.com:

NCAA rules state that only 90 Student-Athletes can participate during the assigned preseason (two-a-days) workouts. This number (90) includes scholarship and non scholarship student-athletes.

Once school starts, the Lamar athletic department has capped the total roster limitation to a total of 100 for

scholarship and non-scholarship student-athletes.

In order to participate in the walk-on program, YOU MUST SATISFY ALL OF THE FOLLOWING

REQUIREMENTS. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.
