Just got a text about this 10 minutes ago and was coming here to post.

Seasons not over yet, but what has Woodard done to deserve this? Didn't he have another year left on his contract anyways?

Very confused by this news.

Is this good or bad news?

If Woodard and the team win some conference games this year and look good doing it maybe it will be good news, shouldn't we wait until then? I couldn't imagine him being hired away for more money right now, he makes decent dough here. Very odd timing.

So hearing this was his last year on contract, if that's true this move makes a little more sense, don't know how it would have looked to some coaches if he was canned at the end of the year. Probably wouldn't have had any good candidates.

I would like confirmation of that though.

I agree CA. Not too sure of what they are protecting. With another year left on contract I could understand doing it next year if things are going good but why do it now? Is Woodard getting or seeking other opportunities?

A little puzzled with this one.

edit: if what you just stated CA is true and it is his last year, then I understand.

According to this tweet by Chris Dabe, Woodard still had another year on his contract.

Lamar coach Ray Woodard has contract through 2014, the school announced. Terms probably differ from 3-yr deal signed in 2011.#BEscores

I want to be clear about this. I want coach Woodard to be successful. I am just not seeing the little things that give me comfort that we will be successful and that we are improving and have the systems in place to get it done even if we are short on talent still. That is my take. I think that, just like in the for profit market place, you have to have performance benchmarks in place to measure against. That should be the case for 2014.

Some of this is to keep Woodard from appearing like a lame duck coach. It's telling the players and guys he's lined up to be signed for next year that the program is stable. If that's the reason I get that. If some of this is based on letters of intent and promises made by prospects, especially, O-line prospects then I get that. Hopefully, it will also have a contingency that the O.C. is gone, maybe I get it. The fact is though, you can't keep changing philosphies on either side of the ball. You have to decide on a system and give it time to work. If we keep changing coordinators every year Lamar will suck until someone comes along to install a system and stick with it and an A.D. who is patient enough to allow it to happen. The teams that are successful year in and year out stick to their system and recruit players who fit that system. They will tweak the system to fit the skill sets of players but, it's basically the same system. Continuity and stability are important if you think you have the right coach and staff. I wonder if we won't see the best of what Ray Woodard brings until the 5th year of actual play. If you stick with Woodard that means the same system and the same O.C. and D.C. for at least 3 years by Lamar's 5th year of actual play. Everyone has been throwing Gary Kubiak under the bus but the Texans got better every year since he was hired and now his team is in the discussion for a Super Bowl. If the offense sucks maybe a new O.C. would help just like the hiring of Wade Phillips turned around the Houston defense. You just have to be careful not to jump the gun. What are we now? Seven games into the season with a new O.C.? I'm just saying. We are young especially on offense. Maybe this pot needs to simmer a little before it's really ready. We waited 25 years for a football team, maybe we can wait a couple more before we decide this version is in need of a change.

This move makes sense. Georgia State is dealing with a lame duck coach and their only win is over another winless team. This gives Woodard three years to win with his upgraded staff. I like the analogy eagle eye gave about the Houston Texans, Kubiak would have been fired years ago if the fans had their say (or if Jerry Jones owned the Texans).

3 yrs he has been here 12 wins at a total of 450000 equals 37500 per win, he may have 13 wins at the end of the year which would be 34615.38. Are we getting a bargain!! Unbelievable!!

I agree Egale Eye hit very well, main about the players fitting the system It's seems Lamar has been a spread team since rebirth, and this year's freshmen class has the best spread type as a whole since the program restarted. You have a pass offense and the try to chage passing type linemen into down hill run players. I feel most import is get us an O.C. that can put together a scheam to use all the recruited talent. We have (ACC & ICU) joining us next season I do not wish for to be the bottom of the well here. Let's just get it wright...

This is a tough one to wrap my mind around. I'm really trying to support him. I want him to do well.

But I just haven't seen anything to make me believe that he can turn things around.

Not a fair comparison between Gary Kubiak and Ray Woodard. The texans records have progressed over the seasons and we have not. I would love to see this staff and coach Woodard make it work. So far I have seen no progress. If not for our talented players, our record wouldn't be as good as it is. I think we have won some games in spite of our coaches game plans.

Just one comment, with the production from our O-line against FCS and FBS schools it doesn't matter what kind of offense you are trying to run. The qb doesn't consistently have time to throw the ball and the running backs are on their own.

Here are the Massey Ratings of both the Texans and Lamar since both teams brought back football. I'm sure there are other ratings that differ from this one but this will give you a good indication of each team's progress:

Houston Texans

Year, Rating, Record

2012, 4, 2-1

2111, 11, 11-7

2010, 24, 6-10

2009, 13, 9-7

2008, 16, 8-8

2007, 14, 8-8

2006, 22, 6-10

2005, 32, 2-14

2004, 15, 7-9

2003, 24, 5-11

2002, 29, 4-12

Lamar

Year, Rating, Record

2012, 77, 3-4

2011, 101, 4-7

2010, 81, 5-6

(124 total FCS teams)

Houston improved the first 3 years then regressed the 4th year. They improved again then regressed in 2010. Jerry Jones and the fans probably would have fired Kubiak that 4th year.

Lamar is only in the middle of the 3rd year. They regressed last year, this year they've improved. But the hard part of the schedule is coming up. We're about to find out which direction this team will go. They've won 2 FCS games a year, this year only 1 so far. Will winning 2 more and going 5-7 be an improvement? Or what about 4-8?

I used the Texans as an example because Gary Kubiak was under the gun so severely in Houston up until last year. The fact is, Houston's talent base has gotten better every year since Kubiak was hired and he weathered a storm early on for drafting Mario Williams instead of Vince Young or Reggie Bush. I think we can agree history justified the pick as being the right one. As many have posted including me, this is only the 3rd season the Cards have fielded a team. I think the talent base has improved here as well. Maybe a new OC would help but you have to be careful not to pull a trigger too soon. In Houston the DC before Wade Phillips sucked. That was born out on the field and by the fact that Phillips took the same players and made them really good. Has the offense sucked that bad or do we need to get young linemen in the weight room and make them stronger and more powerful? Do we need to recruit better linemen? I think the effort is there every week. I haven't seen any give up so far. It's just that some games they were over matched. That is a good sign effort-wise. Changing coaches can be a slippery slope. I'm just saying.
