sleepy Posted December 20, 2013 Author Posted December 20, 2013 The team is getting better???? They are 1-9. If that is an improvement than we have some problems. The fact is last year was the worst year in the history of lamar basketball. HISTORY!!!! That means no team has EVER been worse. This year will not be much better if it is better at all. I don't want roc back I was simply making the point we would have been better off keeping him. PK is not a head basketball coach and that is the bottom line! Quote
coachacola Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Massey Ratings: Knight era: currently: 335 (1-9) 2012-2013: 345 (3-28) 2011-2012: 134 (21-12) Roccaforte era: 2010-2011: 281 (9-17) 2009-2010: 276 (10-18) 2008-2009: 203 (11-15) 2007-2008: 163 (15-11) 2006-2007: 210 (13-17) Billy Tubbs era: 2005-2006: 203 (14-13) 2004-2005: 159 (14-11) 2003-2004: 291 (7-18) Those records are against D1 teams only. Tubbs and Roc were only averaging about 11 1/2 wins per year so Knight needs to win about 11 games this year to match that. I'm guessing he'll end up with 6 to 8 wins this year. Does Pat Knight have another year on his contract? I thought he only has a 3 year contract. Bob West said in his column a week or two ago that Henderson and the new LU prez wanted to dump Woodard and get a new coach. If that's true will they try to do the same with Pat Knight? Quote
Cardinalrule Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Last year told me everything I need to know. We should have canned him after that embarrassment. No, I did not expect a winning record but that was pathetic. I really liked Roc but he was constantly outcoached. I don't care how good of a coach you are, if you can't recruit then you will lose. It is obvious that Knight can't recruit. Hell, I don't even know if he is all that good of a coach. Remember, last year it was going to be all better once conference started. Everyone seems to expect our conference to be pathetic...including Knight. I don't know if our conference teams are all that bad or not but obviously we are VERY bad. So news flash...if you suck you suck. Again, I am sick of this shit. Either get serious with athletics and spend some money and get some athletic programs to be proud of or scrap all of it. Quote

Redbirds Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 I went and watched a high school game for the first time in about 15 years Friday night. I took Lazeek's advice and went and watched some kids that are the better players in this area. I was very impressed with the PG from WO-S, the shooting guard from WO-S and the tall thin guard from HJ. Not sure what numbers the Paige kids and Bosha kid were wearing, but can only assume that that was them. Both of them could play for LU right now. Quote
KingSnake Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 There are 8 kids at LSCPA that are better than anything at Lamar, plus a better coach Quote
Redbirds Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I believe what you say. But can they get into Lamar? Quote
KingSnake Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 My understanding is that that program is full of good citizens and kids that keep up their grades. One from last season is playing at ULM now, Tre Bennett (#15 scoring nationally) has already signed with Indiana State. My guess is, if he can play for Indiana State, he could squeeze intoLamar. Anthony Allen (7-1") center, leads the nation in blocked shots (5.8 per game) after leading the nation last year at any college level with 6.1 per game. They have 5 players averaging in double figure scoring. If you don't go see them, you are missing out. Quote

Redbirds Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I agree. LU doesn't need a JUCO coach. Maybe a hire a JUCO coach as an assistant who will bring his two best players with him like LU did with Skelton a few years back. Quote
geezer Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 What ever direction LU goes next, it will take time, luck or both. Quote
KingSnake Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Seems we have somewhat less than a juco coach now. How would we get any worse? We lost to Nichols State. Quote
KingSnake Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I'm betting there are 3-4 teams in the region LSCPA plays in that could consistently beat the Cardinals and their "D1" coach Quote
geezer Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Skelton was the coach behind Roc's early progress. When Skelton left Roc's teams got worse every year after. Just because a guy is a Juco coach doesn't mean that he can't be ready to move to D1. A winner will figure out what it takes to win and get there. Quote
Chad Cooper Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 my how things are changed...what you really need to do is go back and find the video of the presser of him being introduced as the new lamar coach and listen to those comments & compare them to what he is saying now. Comparing Lamar to North Carolina? - This is the SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE. Don't need "years" to rebuild. Cant fire the football coach when the basketball coach who has won 4-44 in his last 48 games is making more $. I was called "crazy" when I said this was a bad hire 3 years ago. Quote
badndn Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Bring back Skelton. Guy turns programs around at the JUCO level and we know he can coach at this level. I hoped they would hire him three years ago. Still Do. Quote
coachacola Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Didn't Roc beat Knight when Texas tech came to town? That should have disqualified him for the job! Quote
CoachPace Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Yes we did beat texas tech. I was on the team for that year before I became manager. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
CoachPace Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Just to answer your question if we beat them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

eagle eye Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 This is Coach Knight's third year but really only his second recruiting class as most of his 2011-12 team were Coach Rock's recruits. People say he doesn't recruit locally but how many local kids, quality players, would stay when they can go to bigger schools in established programs that will showcase them for the NBA? Not many, maybe none. Ray Woodard's football team didn't show much until last season as his first class started to come of age. We now have some hope that the football team has turned a corner and we can hope for more next season. As long as the kids play hard for him he deserves the chance to see his freshman class as seniors. When rebuilding a program a coach need 4 years, 3 minimum to allow his first recruiting class to mature and you will finally see what direction the program is going. He is only 1-1/2 years in according to his first recruiting class. The results so far aren't good but IMO it's too early to pull the plug just yet. Quote

I would have agreed with you last year, but there's only 2 freshmen on the team this year. Pat Knight brought in a lot of JUCOs because they should be able to contribute right away. There's 7 upperclassmen on this team, they should have won more than 1 game this year!!! After taking Lamar to the NCAAs two years ago he should have had a banner recruiting year. Instead he brought in a lot of (what many said) was sub-D1 talen. As a result they've only won 4 games in 1 1/2 seasons. That is not rebuilding!!! Quote
geezer Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Personally my problem with PK has less to do with the current record and more to do with his apparent attitude toward the fans. While I don't think he needs to suck up to the fans, he doesn't need to make statements that insinuate "the fans are stupid and don't know if a player is D1 material or not" or that there is something besides his recruiting ability that keeps him from getting better players. All he really needed to do to satisfy me was be honest about last years debacle and to explain that this year was like starting over because of last years class. Quote
diaspora Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I think that's a good point Geezer. Some openness about why the team is in the position it is in would be a good way to show some respect/appreciation to the fans that are still showing up. It would also indicate that he has some plan in place. Its currently hard to imagine any light in this tunnel. Quote
