Agreed they have not been in a very good conference but they are getting one thing several LU fans have wanted for a long time which is to go FBS as they are joining the Sunbelt. I'm not sure if that has let them start increasing their scholarships yet or not but if they have then that could give them a little extra depth.

Naw, I think Sam is 2nd best on schedule. Coastal plays in a weak ass conference

I agree with you that SHSU is the 2nd best we will face this year. Coastal is actually and FCS independent this season. Since this is they are transitioning to FBS and this is thier last year as FCS, they are ineligible for a conference championship and the FCS playoffs. Insteady they are playing a 12 game schedule with 8 home games. They are over the 63 scholarship limit for FCS as they get thier roster to 85 for FBS but most of those extra numbers will be freshman this season as they signed 29 this past class.

Also feel like there are some things working against CCU and things working for SHSU.

CCU Cons

- They will be over 1,000 miles from home.

-It will be extremely muggy and I doubt that Conway, SC is like Southeast Texas.

-They have not seen Kade Harrington in person.

-There will be no film on what our new 4-2-5 defense will try to do.

SHSU Pros

- They are going to be an extemley talented team this year.

- They will be looking to avenge last season's loss.

- They have seen Kade first hand.

- There will be 2 games of film on our defense

I wouldn't say you count on the weather being a factor. Conway is a southern state aren't they all familiar with humidity? I compared Conway and Beaumont weather and they are very similar with Conway currently cooler because of rain they are having. Later on in the week the temps there will be in the mid 90's and the humidity is roughly the same as ours. Conway has milder falls and springs and an actual winter time but in early September we just don't differ that much. As a matter of fact the 10 day forecast is showing temps in the 97-98 range. It appears they know hot and humid in Conway.

I also think CC will dig up game film of a 4-2-5 defense so they will have some game plan in mind. The fact is WE don't know what the defense will be when games start to matter. It is an advantage but until the players make the new system work it could be a plus or a minus for Lamar.

CC is in a crappy league but I'm glad nobody has a reason to bitch about playing a D-II or D-III school. A quality test to prepare for conference with a real chance to win. I think that is what everyone wanted, right?

Thanks for the weather report there EE...I based my comment on a coworker who is from SC and always complains about how hot it is here. After looking into it the early September average for Conway is 85-90 with a heat index of 90-95. Beaumont is around 88-93 with heat index of 95-100. Realistically not that big a difference when it's played at 7 PM. Just always go back to the 2014 opener against Grambling when it's was so muggy you would nearly cramp up walking out of the stadium. Conditioning is always the key early on though.

While yes they can and will pull film from a 4-2-5, I made that comment due to then having no film on how we will run it. TCU is the go to to see who it's run effectively but frankly we don't have the same athletes that TCU does...so I would expect some different nuances to mask deficiencies. I had originally planned on doing a position preview this year like last but there are so many unknowns to me on defense that it's just about impossible. Without a depth chart and a currently not up to date roster (position wise) I don't think I could do it very accurately.

And to answer you final question...yes this is what people want...we may lose this game but this is a much better preparation game than a Texas College or Bacone. I just hope the casual fans realize how big of a step in that direction is and show up for the game. They need to understand that no FBS team is going to come to Beaumont and this will be as close as we get I feel.

sadly, the average casual fan doesn't know the difference in Coastal Carolina or Bacone.

if you follow FCS, you know this is a big game.

In reference to puddin' tane's post, If you want folks to show up we have to give them a reason to come out. This program needs to start winning. Fans won't lay down their hard earned money or spend time at the stadium if they don't get a winner. This is not unique in sports. How many times did you upgrade your seat at an Astros game because the team stunk and all you had to do was move down to the field boxes. Try getting a seat close to the field now that Houston is winning again. Remember when Lamar was a basketball powerhouse? They outgrew McDonald Gym, the outgrew the Beaumont Civic Center and they came close to filling the new Montagne Center on a regular basis as long as they were competing for the NCAA or NIT tournaments. Now, you buy a cheap nose bleed seat and sit courtside because Lamar hasn't shown their fans any reason to come and see them play. If you remember the mysterious whisper to Ray Krebbs in Field of Dreams, "If you build it they will come." I offer a similar whisper, "If you start winning they will come." Whether or not it's Coastal Carolina or Bacone or Hamshire-Fannett the expectations are Lamar will eventually lose so why bother. That has been the legacy of Lamar football, ever since I can remember, it has been a losing program. Win conference and win it again and as the winning seasons pile up people will include Lamar in their list of things to do on Saturday nights. Ray Woodard has had the program going in the right direction and early success last season gave way to disappointment because of the mid-season implosion of the defense. Win consistently and people will come to games. Success breeds success and one thing feeds off the other. All the Cardinals have to do is Just Win Baby and you'll see "They will come." (How many clichés can one guy squeeze into a post--I'm ashamed of myself!)
