PeckEm Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) That was an impressive win. Was nice for us to maul SHSU’s A$$ for a change. Now, I can’t help but wonder what the hell is wrong with SAM. Their defense was horrific. We are going to run, they know we are going to run, and they can’t stop it. It really did look like we swapped uniforms from prior years because they’ve been mauling us. And our pass defense was fantastic. They couldn’t run and it looked like from the first snap they knew they shouldn’t bother trying. So, yes, I think they threw for over 300 yds but they passed a ton. I was very impressed with their QB but that’s about it. Their offensive line seemed way below average and their defense, wow, just terrible. I’m thrilled about the win but I’m not a believer just yet. But I will say, that was by far the best performance we’ve had under the Dulz era. I was also pleased to see the number of times we blitzed. Oh, and I wasn’t even mad about all the boring a$$ running we did. Hell, they couldn’t come close to stopping us. Just about the only drive killers were holding calls. Edited October 21, 2018 by PeckEm Quote
KABrother88 Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Missed last week due to a wedding and missed the first half tonight due to my daughters soccer game but was able to watch the 2nd half. If what I saw in the 2nd half was the same in the first half I must say that might have been the most complete win I’ve seen since the rebirth. When I say complete I mean in all phases doing their part. Offensively, the OL was opening massive holes and there really wasn’t a need to throw any more passes than they did. I’ll give OC Dan Dodd credit with the call for the TE seam pass in the last scoring drive. Lamar looked almost content with a 3-and-out so long as they were all runs to keep the clock rolling. Sam could see this and were selling out up front. Sikes has the size and skill set to be a matchup nightmare at this level and you could see it on that play. Defensively, yes they gave up some passing yards but they stiffened when when they needed to. 10 of the 15 SHSU drives were under 30 yards and 8 of those were under 10 yards although one of those was a scoring drive after SHSU was set up at the Lamar 9 yard line. Also, they were getting very good pressure on Brock and from what I watched, Crosley just absolutely had his way with their LT. They missed some pretty bad holding calls in that matchup but he still seemed to be getting pressure regardless. Kick game was solid as Martinez made all of his kicks and Slaydon had a good 44 yard average. His final one was big...48 yards and out of bounds at the 5. I don’t think this win was as big as the last win against SHSU in hindsight because frankly this SHSU isn’t nearly on the level as they were in that time range. If I remember correctly, they were ranked #2 at the time with some polls having them at #1. Not diminishing this win in any way because this win could prove to be monumental in changing the direction of this program. Quote
LU17 Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Wow, they passed for 300 yards!!! I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t checked the stat line. That was a very quiet 300 yards. I have been critical of Schultz, but again I have to admit WE CAME READY TO PLAY!!! I thought a few more passes would have opened up the run for LU. They pretty much knew in the second half we were going to run and they stuffed it until, we hit our TE on a big pass play. Because we run every down, he is always open. If we threw a little more our passing game could compliment our running attack. Everybody knows we are going to run, but passing more would soften up the defense. This was not a fluke or SHSU having a bunch of turnovers or pick sixes. We flat out beat them up and down in spite of a lot of BS holding calls. Okay, beating SHSU makes me think we might be able to pull out a decent season. Hey, if Schultz can make us a winner I will stand with him. I was very proud of how our team played. Hoy came in and looked like a champ. It seems like our QB play has been a lot better. Our QBs aren’t dropping back to pass and immediately running. Maybe it’s because we aren’t calling as many designed passes. Either way, our team looked great. This was a dominating win against a good team. NO LET DOWNS!!! Quote
geezer Posted October 21, 2018 Author Posted October 21, 2018 UIW defeated McNeese by twenty eight points to move into a three way tie for first place. LU still has to go play the games, but if LU can maintain the effort they had today a winning season is still possible. Hope the coaching staff can keep the players from laying an egg next week. NorthoftheBorder Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 This is a solid win! Congratulations to the players and coaches. Good step in the right direction. Quote
WildCard Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Lamar still has four games to play this year and two of them against the what should be the first and second place teams after today is finished, but if Lamar wins two or more I among others could be eating a lot of crow by the end of the year. I'll be sitting at the same table and enjoying my crow--it's tasty with a winning sauce. Quote
coachacola Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 A few notes and thoughts: 3 of the 4 remaining games are on the road. The winnable games are SFA this weekend and HBU at home in a few weeks. Two tough games against conference contenders Central Arkansas and McNeese. A 5-6 record on the year looks pretty good right now, and to be honest, I'll be disappointed if LU doesn't win 5 games. Tyler Slaydon is special teams player of the week. Who would ever guess LU would excel at special teams? How was LU able to rack up 435 rushing yards against SHSU? Wasn't LU giving up that many rushing yards a game last year? Will Schultz stick with Hoy the remainder of the year of go back with Colbert if he's healthy? Anyone know of any good recipes for crow? Quote
geezer Posted October 22, 2018 Author Posted October 22, 2018 From watching a couple of shots of Colbert on the sidelines after the injury, I expect he will be ready by Saturday. Even though Hoy played solidly, assuming Colbert's ready to go he'll be the starter. Only thing might be that Schultz would consider going to Hoy if Colbert was struggling. Quote
Dracula Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Colbert should start, if he is healthy, and I think that he is. If Lamar's running game is as good as it was against Sam, SFA is in for a long night. A good crow recipe, https://bertc.com/subfive/recipes/threecrows.htm Quote
