KABrother88
Was announced in the press conference that All-American Bret Treadway likely will miss the game Saturday with mono...big loss up front but it looks like either Connor Ward or Kanon Mackey will fill it. Ward started 3 games last year and played a lot last season and Mackey is a transfer from Texas St. This would be the first start Treadway has missed since he redshirted as a true freshman...35 straight starts since then. KABrother88
Cards Face Chanticleers in Opener After nearly four weeks of facing their teammates on the field, the Lamar University football team is just two days away from kicking off the 2016 season. For the fourth consecutive season, the Cardinals will open a new season at home, but Saturday's opener may be the toughest for Big Red since the return of the program. Big Red will take on first-time opponent Coastal Carolina who enters the season ranked 16th nationally. The Cardinals enter the new season looking to improve upon a 5-6 record last season that saw them finish tied for fifth in the Southland Conference. The Red and White had to overcome serious injuries to the quarterback position which saw LU's top three quarterbacks miss parts or all of the 2015 campaign with injuries. Coastal Carolina spent a good portion of the 2015 season ranked among the nation's top five before advancing to the NCAA FCS Playoffs. The Chanticleers finished the year 9-3 (.750) overall. Although the Chanticleers appear in the preseason top 25 (one of three consecutive nationally ranked opponents to start the season for LU), Coastal is not eligible for postseason play this season. The Chanticleers are in the first year of their transition to the NCAA FBS level. "We've had a good fall camp but it is to the point where our guys want to play against someone in a different color uniform," said Woodard. "It's a case of the good and bad when trying to get ready for Coastal Carolina. What we know about them is they're a good football team. Just take a look at what they have done over the past four or five seasons – perennial playoff team, top-10 national rankings and numerous All-Americans. They do have a new quarterback this season so we will be doing some guess work about him but more adjustments take place in the first game of the year than any other time of the season. KABrother88
Lamar's Harrington Against Coastal Carolina's Henderson To Be A Battle Of Elite Running Backs Few college football running backs have Kade Harrington's credentials, but De'Angelo Henderson is the rare exception. The Coastal Carolina senior is the reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Year, a 2015 STATS National Offensive Player of the Year finalist and a preseason FCS All-American. Lamar's Harrington is the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year and STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Year runner-up. The battle of elite running backs, neither of whom stands taller than 5-foot-9, will be the marquee matchup when Lamar and Coastal Carolina meet at 7 p.m. Saturday in Provost Umphrey Stadium. "(Henderson) is a phenomenal running back and a heck of a player," Harrington said. "I'm definitely excited to see what he does this season, but I'm hoping he doesn't have his usual good game against us." I thought you might have left us! Good to have you back. At the game and here is my halftime analysis: Defense is playing really well. CCU's Hopkins has some yard but he is an exceptional back...he's gonna get his. This defense is MUCH better than last year. There is a lot of speed out there. Kade is up to his usual tricks with a 60 yarder and a 65 yarder. Marcus Daggs has a couple of big catches.
eagle eye
I have never seen a team flip from one half to the other the way Lamar did tonight. Pitiful and it all started with a terrible pass by Earp that ended up being a pick six. Lamar was driving at the time and the whole game changed in CC's favor. When I left it was 31-14 and I hope it didn't get worse. If you had told me Kade would have over 200 yards rushing and 2 TDs I would have thought, "great, we won!" but it just wasn't the case. Crap. geezer
Disappointing game. Earp winds up with two interceptions. the first of which was a game changer. Really no sustained drives by the offense. Punting game sucked, stupid personal fouls and questionable calls by the coaching staff. I'll give CC credit as being a good team but this was a winnable game that after the pick six LU just seemed to fall apart. What was the idea of going for it on fourth down early in the 4th quarter after finally getting away from your own goal line. If you punt you have a good chance of pinning CC inside their twenty maybe giving your defense a chance to regain control. By going for it and not making it you give CC a short field that they have already displayed they can play well with. Another questionable call why re-kick a punt in the fourth quarter after CC gets a five yard penalty? Net result was one yard and eight seconds off of the clock. Your punting performance sucked up to that point, do you expect a great punt? Edited September 4, 2016 by geezer

coachacola
That interception changed the game. And why does Woodard always try to go fourth down at midfield? I don't think it ever works! Plus the kicking game sucks. Can't blame the defense when the offense can't stay on the field.
CardinalClaw2
The offensive playbook must only have four plays in it, predictable as hell.
geezer
Not saying you blame the defense, but the total time of possession wasn't that far apart at 2.5 minutes. Field position is a big factor also. Lamar spent almost all of the second half in their own end of the field. when they finally had a chance to flip the field they go for it on 4th down. We didn't look like the same team after that, almost like they lost every bit of their confidence.
Dracula
Lamar's QB play just wasn't good enough. The passing game stunk. Was this because Earp just doesn't have a passing game or was he following a poor OC plan? The new defense looked weak on the edges but did hold CC to just 3, in the first half. I've got a feeling that, if not in the Houston game then by the Sam game, Lamar will be using two QB's, Earp and Andrew Allen. Having posted the doom and gloom, I think that Lamar is going to beat Sam and go to the playoffs this year. KABrother88
Noticed the Center Matt Oubre was limping very noticeably (think right before the pick six) and ended up leaving the game. Coach Woodard said in his weekly presser today that Oubre would have an MRI tomorrow to see the severity of the injury. Honestly by Woodard's tone it made me feel like it wasn't a good outlook. bigcam2903
Praying All is well with the young man. Met his parents on game night, very nice & very supportive of their Son & the program. I said it last year when I heard U of H was on the schedule; this ain't Baylor. Take it one play at a time & get out of there injury free. More concerned with Conference wins, although CC should have been a win, or rather a lot closer than the outcome. No time for pity, the Cougars are riding high & ready for their home opener. Let's Go Cards!

Your punting performance sucked up to that point, do you expect a great punt? I have no problem with the decision to go for it. I didn't really like the play call but where in the world was Earp throwing that ball!!???? We were on their 37 yard line. IF the punter did what I imagine he would have, CC would have had the ball somewhere between the 36 (a 1 yard punt) and the 20 (punted out of the end zone). So, at worse I figured CC would have the ball on the 37 if we didn't make it. But damn, there wasn't an LU receiver anywhere close to that pass??!!! I think we rekicked the punt because the first one was only 25-30 yards? That was a bizarre game. We played well in the first half, and our punter was great in the first half. The second half we looked like a below average high school team and our punter looked like pop warner!! Anyway, like someone said earlier. Same old crap

Having posted the doom and gloom, I think that Lamar is going to beat Sam and go to the playoffs this year. Earp looked like a true freshman with the jitters. He has looked like the best QB of the bunch all fall so hopefully he has it out of his system. IMHO Allen hasn't been impressive at all in the fall as he's way too quick to tuck it and run. The line on both sides of the ball got pushed around pretty good. They missed Treadway's play and leadership on the O-line. If it wasn't for the two big runs by Kade, the game woulda been even more ugly. They're gonna have to go deep more often earlier in the offensive series to try and keep the other team's defense honest even if it's an incompletion. I think they bounce back, just not this week lol. Hopefully they get through the Houston game injury free. Great atmosphere, bad outcome. It happens. Coastal looked pretty legit to me actually. Special teams definitely weren't very special.

The talent seemed comparable to me but I'd have to agree on the line play, their line play beat ours, no doubt. Tebo, one tackle?? Wth, make some damn plays. And like many others have said...our play calling is soooooooo boring. I'm curious, our receivers looked VERY slow to me. Is there any information on any of them on 40 times? Do we have any receiver that can stretch the field or make big plays??? If not, put Kendrick King out there. I know that kid has plenty of speed/quickness.
