-worse loss since we brought back football

-Schultz can be out coached by the opponents water boy

-offensive scheme is some where between pop warner and jr. high

-offensive line got owned

-defense, no pressure on qb, no wrapping up

-there’s a whole, bigass field out there....we attack it 2 yards at a time.

the only player on that field tonight deserving of a scholly was the kicker, and I think he’s a walk on

Schultz is creating Juco U. Can’t build a program that way. Be decent every other year, maybe.

I didn’t like the hiring of Schultz, especially after realizing he was more franchione than Patterson.

I’da fired him at halftime

Been off the site awhile because life got in the way but took the time to hop on today and see if all the sunshine and rainbows which were being blown up everyone’s backside by the likes of Dracula had finally been replaced by the reality of the sh*tstorm this program actually is - Puddin’ you DID NOT disappoint!!!! When you get a decent crowd out to Provost-Umphrey it’s best not to lay a golden turd against a team that’s 0-4. The absolute ONLY chance this team had of making the playoffs this year included beating teams like SFA and then upsetting at least one of the leagues elite teams. 0-2 in conference, losing to an inferior team, and having a newly-extended coach get out-coached is not going to inspire people to come spend their hard-earned money out there, especially when there is high school football which is substantially better than what Lamar’s producing at the moment. Patience is already wearing thin with the football program within the community. Lamar administration needs to start taking a very hard look at the leadership of the football program and make substantial changes to improve the product on the field or my guess is the program will not be here in 5-7 years.

I was a student when Billy Tubbs AD and Dr. Simmons, School President lead a vote for a student fee to fund football. If the student fee didn't pass they would not have brought back football.

With the student fee so important, I can't see it being a minor amount of the annual football budget.

Funny how life gets in the way, when LU is 2-0 or even 2-2, yet those life clouds sure disappear, when you see a legitimate opening to rip the program. Good news for you, if you're this ecstatic about LU's game performance vs SFA, you must be absolutely drooling, over the potential whacking in the upcoming Sam game. Still, nice to see you back and I do hope those life clouds are temporary and everything is or will be fine. I know you're not kicking the kids just the coaching staff and me but I see these kids trying, hurting, and that's a fine line I can't walk but different strokes for different folks.

I watched the game again and all game long there were a lot of early popping open receivers, wide open receivers, that never got a look. I don't know if this is an OC Scott Linehan vs Kellen Moore type of controlled coaching situation or it's on, an injured or not, Hoy. Either way, Schultz is going to have to make a decision and I wonder if Givins is going to get a shot next game?

The student fee was initiated to pay off the bond debt that was incurred to cover costs associated with stadium renovations, etc. - it was not meant to subsidize the program once those bonds are retired. I’m not knowledgeable on how the implementation of student-approved fees works within the Texas State system but I would assume that if the issue voted on was specifically for funds to be used for the bonds that the fee will be eliminated when the bonds are retired.

Being 2-0 against an NAIA team and a team you should have beaten by three touchdowns but had to squeak by in overtime to win is not really something to celebrate. I believe you were the one who said I’d be “eating crow” because this team was on the way up, thanks to Schultz. At what point are you going to quit making excuses for him? And you’re correct, I’m not kicking the student-athletes - I have no doubt they’re giving 100%. Schultz, on the other hand, gets paid a sh*tpile of money to make sure those athletes are adequately prepared for their opponent (I would say he failed against MVSU and SFA) and to make sure they are prepared mentally to not be making the stupid mistakes that are costing them games. Schultz is not the answer and needs to go!

From the link you provided.

The bond retirement, Simmons said, will be covered through athletics revenues, a student-approved student fee increase of $8.75 per semester credit hour for long semesters and $4.50 per semester hour for summer sessions and through more private donations.

If enrollment holds, Simmons predicted the increased student fees will bring in about $2 million per year. The president also said projections show the addition of football will lead to a significant increase in future enrollments.

I've haven't changed my opinion, of the program, and you haven't changed yours. We're right back, where we left off several weeks ago. Game on.

Not sure what it is going to take to get LU to a consistent winning program in multiple sports, but I don't think anyone would argue Woodard wasn't going to take the program any farther. Schultz doesn't appear to have been able to really turn the corner yet. The lack of hiring quality coaches has been consistent in all sports. The exception might be the Women's basketball program but then again I don't believe they've gotten past a first round of post season in the last two decades.

I just realized we extended Shultz contract through 2021.

Yes and no. I would imagine there is a buyout clause. Marco, if he is still around, has skin in the game and bigger job stars in his eyes. An underperforming football program is a broken step on the AD ladder. Just my opinion.

sfa also has around 40 new players this year (new coach)

according to box score- they started 6 freshman, 1 sophomore

Carthel took Schultz to the woodshed.

some coaches are are lifelong assistants at a bazillion different schools for a reason

but hey, 20 years ago he coached LaDainian

I may be stubborn and a hard head but I also try to be a realist. I don't want to speculate, on the QB play, because Hoy played hard and probably hurt but, in my unprofessional opinion, something physical, mental, or both is effecting his play. LU plays at home vs ACU. This game should be winnable much like the SFA game should have been winnable. How this game plays out should answer a lot of questions.

Watched every play, even their kneel down--came to my feet maybe twice. We are right where we were this time a year ago; horrible after 5 games. When we finished big and made the playoffs everyone forgot how bad we started the season. Do I think we'll do it again? All we need is to block a field goal and run back for a touchdown. That happens a lot, right? Maybe all the towel waving will get us started--rah, rah, rah, go team! It reminds me of M. L. Carr sitting on the end of the Celtics bench and waving a towel--I hated that guy.....and I was a Celtics fan. But never fear we've got Schultz wrapped up until 2021 so no one else can come steal him away. Get mad and prove me wrong--I will be grateful.

Another very interesting fact is that not one player on the SFA roster was from the Golden Triangle area. Lamar has around 20, maybe we need to stop recruiting locally! SFA roster was loaded with kids from 6A schools from the Houston and DFW areas.

Hmm...arguably two of our best recruits: Reggie Begleton - Beaumont West Brook; Rodney Randle, Jr. - Beaumont Ozen. Where players are from makes zero sense. If you are good you are good, if you aren't you aren't.

Sorry, I'll have to disagree. We definitely are not right where we were several weeks ago. I don't think the biggest pessimist would have predicted us struggling to beat MVSU and us losing at home to SFA. No way, no how (I say that because, with Dultze at the helm, I'm probably the biggest pessimist and I thought we'd blow them both out).

The we're is Fear the Bird's and my different opinions of the leadership and the direction of the football program. Our opinions haven't changed over the last several weeks, maybe longer. I'm not crazy happy about what happened last week vs SFA but I'm still believe that the situation will work itself out.

Looks like SFA will be kicking our tails for years to come: #3 ranked recruiting class in FCS in 2019. Also landed the top FCS recruit in the nation, some defensive lineman from Lufkin...he's probably one of the ones we couldn't block.

Here is a cheerful note. https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fcs/current/individual/11

HBU is #25, in the latest FCS coaches poll, but , hold on it gets better.

My thoughts....

LU seems to be trigger happy when it comes to extending contracts after one successful season. They did this for Pat Knight and then for Schultz. I think this is one reason why LU is so inconsistent in putting up back-to-back winning seasons. They need to stop rewarding mediocre coaching!

Hiring coaches, I admit this is pure speculation on my part, but LU seems to rely on the "who-they-know" process in hiring coaches instead of picking the most qualified. That seems to be a southeast Texas political thing and it's bled over to LU athletics.

If you look at the athletic budgets for LU, SFA, SHSU, etc, you'll notice that outside sources (donations, ticket sales, etc) only pay for maybe 10% to 20% of the athletic budget, the rest comes from student fees and other university resources. In Texas no tax money is allowed to go towards athletics.
