  1. Not sure what to think about Lamar this week. Texas St played Arizona St to a three-point loss and had chances to win it and defeated UTSA soundly last week which would make you think a little higher of Lamar, but last week Lamar probably should have won by a bigger margin and then there were all the penalties. Weber St is #25 in the FCS coaches poll, so it will take a strong effort for Lamar to get the win.
  2. Lamar soccer ends their non-conference schedule with another draw versus UL-L. Lamar was ahead for most of the game but gave up the tying goal with about four and a half minutes left in the match. Conference play starts Sunday at SFA.
  3. Northwestern St. offense scores a touchdown on one big play but that is it for the rest of the game. The NWST defense could not stop South Alabama offense. Final score SA 87 - NWST 10
  4. Through the first quarter of Northwestern St game. South Alabama scores on all four of their possessions for a 24-3 lead. It would be 28 but for a third and goal penalty on SA.
  5. Week three opens Thursday evening with Northwestern St taking on FBS South Alabama. Probably a blowout win for South Alabama. Notable games this week include UIW versus Southern Illinois, Nicholls at Sacramento St and SELA versus Eastern Washington unless something happens to this game as a result of hurricane Franciene. For me Lamar versus Weber St is the game of the week. Conference play opens with SFA at McNeese.
  6. One of three SLC games this week versus the Big Sky Conference. Lamar needs to step up and get the win as do the other SLC teams. UIW plays MVFC Southern Illinois for the fourth game this week against perceived stronger FCS conferences.
  7. Soccer gets back on the winning side with a 4-1 win over Texas Southern.
  8. With all but the Commerce game at UC Davis complete, I would say it is a disappointing day for the SLC. Commerce is trailing at the half and Lamar is the sole winner for the conference on the day. Two biggest disappointments are UIW falling by twenty-one to South Dakota St and Northwestern St falling to Prairie View A&M. It's not really surprising that UIW lost, but the three-score deficit doesn't help the conference resume when it comes to playoff berths. The bright side might be that none of the FBS losses were blowouts.
  9. Although a very sloppy game for Lamar and way too many penalties, Lamar gets their first home opener win against a Div 1 school since 2014. Lamar wins 28-14.
  10. Lamar defense makes a big stop in the fourth quarter on a fourth and one play to get the ball back with 6:10 left in the game. Lamar drives down the field before a penalty pushes them back. A face mask penalty on MV gives LU a first down and Griffin scores to extend their lead to 28-14 with 1:04 left.
  11. Another penalty kills Lamar's opening drive of the second half. MV comes back with a solid drive to score on a twenty-yard touchdown pass to close the lead to 21-14 Lamar.
  12. So far this evening in my opinion most of the games are progressing with what could be perceived as a positive for the SLC. UIW and SDS are in a good battle with SDS up by seven at the half. SELA is within one score of Southern Miss. Nicholls is down nine to LSU. One surprise is that SFA is leading North Texas. The one disappointment so far is that Northwestern St is trailing Prairie View A&M. Although down by eleven, I think HCU is playing better than I expected against Tarleton.
  13. Lamar up 21-7 at the half. Should probably be one or two more scores for Lamar but the penalties are killing consistency. Lamar has eleven penalties for 105 yards. Early in the game it was the defense, but by now the penalties are getting close to equal between the offense and the defense. Example, Lamar got the ball back with 1:20 left in the game, started to move the ball but then had a false start and two holding penalties to force just running the clock out.
  14. Following a good punt return, Lamar scores on a sixty-three-yard pass from Coleman to Hyder.
  15. Lamar offense answers with an eight play seventy-seven-yard drive to retake the lead 14-7.
  16. MV finishes their second drive with a four-yard pass and ties the game at seven.
  17. Lamar defense has to clean up its play. Two penalties in the first two MV drives keeps MV offense on the field when they should have had to punt.
  18. Lamar forces MV to punt, then the offense moves down the field and finishes the drive with a touchdown pass to Rhea with 10:11 left in the first quarter.
  19. It's game time. Lamar kicks off.
  20. I'm still disappointed with how Lamar started last week, but that score makes Lamar look better.
  21. Week 2 has the SLC playing four FBS schools and five FCS. The marquee game this week in my opinion is UIW at South Dakota State. The Commerce-UC Davis game should decide whether SLC is in the plus column for FCS wins this week.
  22. Volleyball keeps their win streak alive taking two games on Friday. Next action is next Friday in Memphis for two games on Friday and one on Saturday.
  23. If I have read all the weekly schedules correctly, the SLC has ten games against Big Sky opponents, eleven against the SWAC and four against MVFC opponents in addition to the five against UAC. I think the SLC has a chance to prove it is worth more than one bid, but everyone has to perform well against these other FCS teams.
  24. Lamar takes on Miss Valley Saturday at 6 PM. Miss Valley fell to Tenn St in their opening game in a battle of FCS schools. It is a home game against a FCS school so Lamar should be slightly favored. Keys for Lamar in my opinion are reducing the penalties, moving the ball consistently on offense and the d-line controlling the line of scrimmage. O-line needs to block better than last week to give Coleman time to get passes off and open holes for the backs to get to the second level.
  25. Volleyball gets first win of the season at Prairie View A&M. Next two matches in Thibodeaux. Neither are conference matches but might give an idea of what is to come for the rest of the season.
