Preston Mattingly, the son of Don Mattingly, who played basketball for Lamar from 2013 to 2016 has been named the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. I saw his dad at a Lamar game, sitting with Gilligan.

2024-25 Southland Conference Preview Cardinals picked #7/12 in this Southland Preview article which is two spots lower than the Preseason Poll which had us at #5. Article talks about the return of Hamilton and Knight and also mentioned the JUCO transfer Marmolejos as being a key contributor. Has some good content about some of the other teams in Southland as well. Good read.

We're hitting the home stretch of conference. We're at 2-1 while Southeastern is at 3-1. After a pair of bounce-back wins, it's time for the Cards to assert themselves as a top-tier team in the Southland and games like this are the start of it. So important that even I'm coming into town for it!!!

Only four conference matches this week. At the end of three quarters UIW is up big on HCU. Lamar is up by seven over SLU and just ahead of the half SFA is defeating Nicholls. Commerce plays McNeese this evening.

The Cards are now at #19 and 25 on the Stats Perform FCS poll and the FCS coaches’ poll, respectively. Apparently, the matter in which they won didn’t hurt them as much as I would’ve expected. Peck ‘em!

Only live stats to go by, but Lamar up by nine points at the half. Offense is scoring, but LSUA is scoring also. Junior transfer Marmolejos is leading all scorers with 17 points in fifteen minutes of playing time and is 5-7 on three point attempts. Looking forward to hearing from those that could attend this game.

One non-conference game this week as Commerce takes on Prairie View. After this weekend only one conference team will be undefeated as UIW plays SELA. The remaining games should start to put end of the season standings in order.

The women took care of business with a good start against East Texas Baptist over matching them 70 to 39. I have neglected this site, but plan to post photos taken at Lamar Athletics events. The Facebook site is a page and open to the public, so anyone can see and download the photos want. https://www.facebook.com/media/set?vanity=bigredfan2&set=a.575293751682618

Cards travel to Natchitoches on Saturday to play NWST at 2 PM. NWST is winless so logically this should be a win, but just a win is not good enough. Lamar must play each play like the conference championship is depending on it.

The SLC and UAC are probably second tier FCS conferences in football. They have some head to head games in the non-conference, so how will that turn out. First up is Week 0 Tarleton State versus McNeese St. McNeese went winless in games played last year including an opening loss to Tarleton. Tarleton finished the year 8-3 including three wins against current year SLC schools. Lamar will play Central Arkansas in a few weeks, not sure how many other head to head games are on the schedules.

Lamar travels to Commerce this Saturday at 3:30 PM for what is probably a must win game in regard to the Cards success for the rest of the season. Commerce comes into the game with a 1-1 conference record, both games were on the road with a two-score loss at SELA and a three score win over NWST. SELA is currently at the top of the conference standings with wins over Commerce and HCU.

Like last week this week is conference only games with Lamar at Commerce the one we care most about. Two other games are significant to looking forward for what to expect the rest of the season for the Cards and conference standings. First SFA travels to current conference leader SELA. Next McNeese travels to UIW with both future opponents for Lamar. UIW has only played one conference game and McNeese's conference win is over SFA. Last NWST is at Nicholls.

Conference games only this week. I suppose for each school their game is the top game of the week, but for me it's a toss up between UIW versus Nicholls and Lamar versus SFA. Using the rankings UIW/Nicholls is the game of the week, but Lamar gets their shot at both of them later and the results of that game gives indication of what is to come. For me Lamar is the key game this week as SFA has a conference loss to McNeese on the books, so they need the win to stay relevant and Lamar needs the win to maintain the preseason expectations. HCU has a chance to prove last week's win at McNeese wasn't a fluke if they can take down SELA and NWST has what might be their best ch…

Although Lamar doesn't play this week there are still five games involving SLC teams. Three are conference games and two are Non-conference games. The two non-conference games are both against SWAC members with UIW playing Prairie View and Nicholls taking on Southern. The conference games are McNeese at HCU, Commerce at SELA and NWST at SFA.

Things are quiet this week with no game on Saturday. Hopefully the offensive staff is scheming and working on opening up the offense. This is a chance to heal up the nicks and bruises, and get better with our playbook and execution. I am still positive about how this team can finish, but I have tempered my expectation to 8-4 being a really good season in year 2 of the Rossomando era.
