Lamar wins 72-58. A good win for Lamar as they held UIW below their season scoring average. Brooks said after the game that Hamilton was at full strength tonight after some kind of treatment over the holiday break and holding him back the last couple of games. Hamilton had sixteen points to lead the team.
Played five and a half minutes so far in the second half before the first timeout and UIW has chipped away again at the lead, now at 47-42 making three-point shots. Their leading scorer Bailey has gotten hot this half.
Lamar plays good defense and gets some good shots to extend the lead back to nine points at the half 39-30. UIW has twelve turnovers compared to six for Lamar. Hamilton is leading the way for Lamar with twelve points and five rebounds.
That under sixteen-minute media timeout broke Lamar's streak and the game has been pretty even over the next eight minutes with Lamar leading 25-17 at the 7:57 mark.
Cards face UIW tonight at 7 PM. Will Lamar start the conference out at 4-0 for the first time in a quarter century? They definitely have a decent chance to.
UIW outscores Lamar in the second half but are unable to overcome the first half deficit. Lamar improves to two and zero in conference play one game back of Southeastern who has won their first three conference games. Final score LU 69 - UIW 47
UIW outscore Lamar by one in the third quarter as Lamar's shooting percentage falls and UIW starts hitting some shots. Lamar still committing way too many turnovers as they now have twenty-one for the game.
Ladies open like they never took any time off with a 21-7 first quarter. Cards shoot 64% from the field and lead in rebounding. Only rusty spot is turnovers where the Cards have two more than UIW.
Lamar women return to SLC action Thursday at 7PM versus UIW. Cards won their opening conference game in December before closing out the non-conference schedule and taking a long Christmas break.
I'm afraid Lamar may be approaching the point where they can't get peer level non-conference teams to come to Beaumont. As a whole the SLC may be approaching that. The worst thing that can happen to a mid-major or higher program is tp loose to what is considered a lower-level team. Even Gonzaga has had to play games almost 300 miles from campus a couple of times a year to get quality opponents to play them in Seattle.
Final score Lamar 82 - SA 65. Unimpressive outing for the Cards. Too many turnovers, inconsistent offense, need more energy on defense. Probably overlooked the opponent as it is a lower division program.
Unless Hamilton came up with some kind of injury during the off time, Lamar isn't taking this game very seriously as Hamilton isn't suited up tonight. Not using the regular starting five seemed to get Lamar off to a slow start as at one point Lamar was shooting 1-10 from the field and weren't taking good care of the ball either. Since then, Lamar has slowly built a lead and with 7:31 left in the first half the Cards are up by five 22-17.
Cards return to action December 30th against A&M San Antonio to restart after the Christmas break and close out their non-conference schedule. A victory will give Lamar a six and five non-conference schedule and over all seven and six record for the 2024 portion of the season. This game should give the Cards a good warm up to get ready for the rest of the conference season and starts the first of five straight home games. Tip off tomorrow is an hour earlier than normal with a 6 PM start.
Lamar outscores Northern Colorado 17-5 in the third quarter to take a 36-25 lead on good defense holding NC scoreless through about the first seven minutes.
Lady Cards appeared surprised by NC's height and full court press to begin the game falling behind 9-0 before scoring and slowly coming back to a one point deficit at the end of the first quarter 11-10 and then played even in the second quarter to still trail by one, 20-19 at the half.
Disgusting first half for Lamar. Down twenty-seven points at the half, 49-22. Shooting 29% compared to 48% for Tech, out rebounded by seven, twice the number of turnovers as Tech, did not shoot a free throw.
Lamar continued to slide until getting behind by nineteen with 9:05 remaining in the half. Turnovers and poor shooting are hurting the Cards. Tech has two bigs out today.
I don't have a problem with an extension but I think there are other ways to support and show appreciation for what a coach does. Give me a Tommy Lasorda who worked on one-year contracts with the Dodgers for well over a decade. MLB is definitely not loyal to managers in general.
