I don't care that Lamar didn't beat Rice at Reckling Park last night. I am happy they made a respectable showing against the 14th ranked team in the country and it's important they made a game of it. Losing 7-2 to a top 20 team is nothing to be ashamed of. This weekend's series against SELA could very well decide who wins the SLC regular season. SELA is 18-3 in conference and 32-13 overall while LU is 16-5 in conference and 31-12 overall. If LU can win the series they will be only one game behind SELA for first and could actually take over second place in the SLC from SAM who is 17-4 depending on what SAM does this weekend against TAMU-CC. SAM is likely to sweep last plac…

Lamar has added UH to next week's schedule and will play them at 6:00 Monday at Vincent-Beck. Lamar has had to cancel a couple of mid week games due to weather so this gives us a chance to help our RPI if we can beat them. Lost 4-3 to them earlier in the year then reeled off the 15 game win streak. So this now makes for Rice, SELA x 3, Houston, & SHSU x 3 in a span of 12 days with the first 5 games coming in just 6 days. Will really test our bullpen.

While mid-week games in the middle of conference are not normally a real indicator of anything other than development of pitching prospects and maybe some position players who don't normally play on the weekend, a win would have potentially helped in gaining an at large berth for the NCAA tourney. The good news is that for the conference regular season championship and the post season LU holds it's destiny in it's own hands. I think eight and one over the last nine conference games might be enough to get the regular season championship.

Usually Big T keeps us up to date with the Lady Cardinals softball team and since I haven't seen any posts recently I figured they needed a little love too. Currently the Lady Cards are in 3rd place in the SLC behind McNeese and Nicholls of all teams. They lost 2 of 3 to McNeese this past weekend at home which is a little heartbreaking since we won the first game of the series. They travel to Thibodeaux, La this weekend to play a big series against Nicholls to close out the tournament. A series win, or sweep might propel the Lady Cards into the 2nd seed of the tournament. If Lamar loses or are swept they could fall to as far as 6th seed if UCA and Abilene Christian win th…

The series beginning tomorrow is big. Lamar should win but sometimes that doesn't mean much. The pitching has been good and if the offense can get back on track we should come out okay. This series and the one with Incarnate Word next week are big, not just because they are conference games but both series are on the road. We take care of business away from VB Stadium then the road gets easier. Besides 10 of the last 16 games are on the road so LU needs to become true road warriors. How sweet would a sweep of both series be as we head into home games against SELA and SAM? But, it isn't a good idea to look too far down the road because it all starts tomorrow in Houston and…

Congratulations to the Lamar Men's Tennis team for winning the SLC conference tournament over the weekend beating TAMU-CC in the finals on Sunday. It is the first conference title ever for Lamar and the first win in the past 3 seasons in the conference final vs TAMU-CC. The win qualifies Lamar for the NCAA Championships. The selection show for the seedings wills be next Tuesday at 5:30 PM and can be seen on NCAA.com. Nice job Cards!

I was flipping through the ESPN channels this evening and ran across SFA Women versus Nebraska for the team bowling championship. SFA won the match four games to three to win their first NCAA Bowling Championship. Congratulations to them and good for the conference. Personally I really don't like anything SFA but since LU doesn't have bowling to my knowledge and they are a conference member, I swallowed hard and posted it anyway.

What a compete bunch of chicken shizzle on Lamar Baseball for canceling a midweek baseball game AT McNeese. Why would we do this? Quite obvious why this game was cancelled...probably nothing to do with the new addition to the McNeese staff huh? McNeese plays at Lamar for the weekend conference series this year and in return Lamar travels to McNeese for a convenient non conference midweek game. Next year the situation is flip flopped. Win-win for both teams. Now today, in the middle of the season, long after the schedules have been agreed upon, Lamar renegs on their commitment. What an embarrassment for this program. How blatantly obvious does this stink? I'd b…

My son has been in the marching band the last four years and I have been attending nearly every home game during that time. The first two years I would park in the lot between the Health Science building and the old Gentry Hall building, which is now part of LIT. The last two years I have used the Setzer Center lot. By the way, I was told that it's now called the Set and not the Setzer center. I enjoy walking through the Setzer Center and revisiting where I used to hang out, in my partying days at Lamar, in the early '70s. I enjoy walking through the Quadrangle, both before and after the game, and here again, I have been informed that it is not the Quadrangle but the Qu…

LU wins game one five to one. LU scored four in the first and got an insurance run in the seventh. McNeese scored in the top of the eighth.

Coach Woodard announced today that Eric Roark will be the DL coach this season. Roark had been the DL coach at UTSA since 2009 until he was let go by new HC Frank Wilson. Also had stops at SMU and Tennesee along the way.

I will be at the Crawfish Bowl tomorrow and will be providing updates on Twitter. Follow @bigredinsider if you don't already do. They will not be breaking the team up into 2 separate teams like they typically do. According to the coaches there have been too many injuries on the OL & DL to have enough players to fill 2 different teams. Game will strictly be offense vs defense with a scoring system. Scoring system is as follows: Offense Touchdown = 6 pts Field Goal = 3 pts 2 pt Conversion = 2 pts Extra Point = 1 pt 10+ Yard Play = 1 pt Drive With 3 1st Downs = 1 pt Flagrant Penalty = -1 pt Defense Defensive Touchdown = 10 pts Turnover = 6 pts Mi…

Tre'von Armstead was a standout football player for PA Memorial. He graduated in 2012 and signed a scholarship to attend Baylor University. You can read the articles on why he was dismissed from the team and expelled by the University. The details about his legal problems are so murky, was there a crime committed or not, I doubt if the truth will ever be known. If he wanted to play out his eligibility, at Lamar, should Lamar be interested, knowing that it would be wading into really nasty water, or stay out of it?

In my opinion, last year's play, from the QB position, dropped a notch or two from 2 years ago. I think that Cox, Earp, and Mckenzie will be much better than last year's group. However, the OL graduated its two tackles. Any word on how this OL group is doing in Spring practice?
