There have been several comments I've read on this site which have referred to the football and men's basketball programs as the "crown jewels" of the athletic department. And while this is a common theme and thought-process among most athletic programs and fan-bases I have to wonder if it is an antiquated and / or short-sighted way of thinking - UConn has certainly proven that an athletics department can be built by and carried on the shoulders of something other than football or men's basketball. Shouldn't the programs which are winning consistently, in terms of win percentage, championships, or both, be considered the "crown jewels" of the department? And while I ce…

https://lamarcardinals.com/news/2019/7/18/football-cardinals-picked-fifth-in-slc-preseason-poll.aspx Cards play three of the top four picks and does not play number one pick Nicholls. The pick is probably a realistic one based on last year and LU history. Here's hoping the team proves the pick to be too low. My guess is the first two SLC games will set the tone. At SELA and home against SFA.

https://lamarcardinals.com/news/2019/6/27/steward-steps-down-as-womens-golf-coach.aspx I hate to see coaches from the more minor sports leave if they are having success. I hope Born is attempting to identify a plan to keep these kind of coaches in the fold. Why are they leaving? Is it to get closer to home, more money, stronger conferences? What is LU missing?

https://lamarcardinals.com/schedule.aspx?path=wsoc Women's Soccer appears to have a tough non-conference schedule including home matches with Oklahoma State and Alabama. There are no apparent automatic wins and by the time the ladies get to conference they should be well prepared. Good to see, hope both basketball programs have similar schedules although I know there is little chance of getting an SEC or Big 12 school at home. You have to be somebody they believe will help them get an at large bid to the tourney for them to consider coming to Beaumont. Gonzaga got most of their earlier years big name programs to meet them in Seattle until just the last couple of year…

Anyone else have the sense if the Men's program doesn't at least finish top 3 in the standings and have a good showing in the conference tournament that we will move on from Tic Price... I feel he has had talented teams and they constantly underachieve ( outside of our win streak last year to propel us up the Southland ladder ) It was nice to see but I feel that's our ceiling under Price... Yes I get it 19,19 & 20 wins but take out the non D-1 wins and look at the record very average at best. Gut feeling says we underachieve and we have an opening for Head Coach after this season ... Don't get me wrong Tic worked nothing short of a miracle after the litt…

The whirlwind single-season for Kopp with Eagle Basketball concluded with a scholarship offer to Lamar University. He struck a particular chord with head coach Tic Price who was an assistant at Tennessee-Chattanooga in the 1980s when Kopp’s father Will was staring on the university’s tennis courts. “(Price) expects me to earn freshman of the year in the (Southland) conference and be part of the core that takes them back to the NCAA (tournament),” Kopp says. “The style of play … moving without the ball, catch and shoot, pick-and-pop, isolation match-ups … plays to my strength.” Kopp’s arduous journey to upper echelon hoopdom required a fully charged industrial streng…

These basketball trivia questions gave me a couple of flash memories, back to my Lamar time, of the early 70's. One was at Halftime of a Centenary vs Lamar game, that was played at the old McDonald Gym. I was sitting on the bottom row and next to the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms. Robert Parish walked by. The 7'0, future NBA multi champion and Hall of Famer, Robert Parish, walked by not 3 feet away and he was one scary looking dude. Yeah, he made such an impression, that to this day, I can still see his pissed off looking face. Another memory was, of the 1972-73 battle between Bill Walton, of Mr UCLA and NCAA all Everything fame, vs Elton Hayes, for the FG% made …
