Hey Cards. Mean Green alum here. Our thoughts and prayers are with you guys as you deal with things much bigger than football. I had a very last minute thought and tweeted to our AD about the possibilities of creating something...but are any of you guys who are planning to come to Denton interested in hauling back a load of donations to Beaumont from NT fans? Seeing how late it is it's likely not to be a huge donation...but you never know. Just feels like we need to do something bigger if this game goes ahead and gets played. Anyone interested please feel free to email me tyler@centexsf.com. I live 2.5 hours south of Denton in Temple so I'm counting on other fo…

Obviously to many this doesn't feel like the Monday before the college football season kicks off (yes there were games last weekend but this week is the big one). Everything that is going on in the coastal bend area and Houston is devastating. Here in the Beaumont area things haven't been as bad but we still are in the line of fire of more rainfall and potentially a second landfall in a couple days. I'm not sure what plans are for the game this weekend in Denton as they could still see heavy rainfall come this weekend. This storm is breaking all kinds of records. I'll try to treat this as a normal week in terms of the boards in case everything stays on schedule. My …

Cardinals made easy work of their first opponent. Upon further review, McGill was coming off a win over Kent State. They also took SMU to OT in Canada so the Cards will take the win!

It's that time again. I will be running the Pick'em Contest again this year and will keep it the same as last year. For those that didn't play or need a refresher, her are the rules for the game. • There will be 15 games to pick each week. - If a game is cancelled then the following week will have a game added to the list. • All games will be Saturday games with kickoff at 11:00 AM or later. - Exceptions to this rule will be in the event Lamar plays on a day other than Saturday and games played Thanksgiving week. • Thread will be locked at kickoff of the earliest game on the list. • One "Game Of The Week" each week with a score prediction - Game Of The Week wil…

Texas Tech walk-on QB Luke Gonsioroski has died of cancer at age 18. He committed to TT in January as a preferred walk-on. In March of 2016 a tumor was found on his lung. He was declared cancer free after undergoing 2 rounds of chemotherapy. Three months later he had the tumor removed. According to Joe Kusek of the Billings (Montana) Gazette the tumor was about the size of 2 footballs. Two months after committing to TT the cancer returned. Luke was able to walk across the stage to receive his diploma from Baker HS in Baker Montana. Luke died of the cancer yesterday surrounded by family. Gonsioroski was a 4.0 student who also played basketball and ran track for Baker HS. I…

The Cowboys finished their rookie mini-camp and there were positive things that happened during the weekend. One thing I was so pleased to see was that our own Kade Harrington was in the Cowboys rookie camp this weekend as tryout guy. Hopefully, he was able to show enough to stick around for a while!!! Go Kade!!!!

Beaumont native and New Mexico Lobos guard Jordan Hunter is transferring to LU. He was a 3 star recruit back in 2015. I like this from the article: https://bustingbrackets.com/2017/07/17/new-mexico-basketball-jordan-hunter-transferring-lamar/

The Southland Conference has announced its 2017 preseason All-SLC members and Lamar was given only one representative in Jr DB and Beaumont native Rodney Randle who earned 2nd team honors. Looking at what Lamar returns from last season that's not surprising because probably the only other player who could have made a case for one of the teams is LB Cameron Hampton. This goes to show how much turnover the roster has seen from the 2016 season. I'm not saying some of the guys we have for 2017 aren't capable of earning a spot on the end of the season team but typically preseason lists are based on what is returning from the previous season. Not surprising though is the nu…

Mike James signed an NBA contract with Phoenix last week. Saw him playing in summer league game Wednesday night--had 18 points and 7 assists--a lot crisp passes in a summer league game made him stand out. Announcers said a lot of good things about him. http://www.nba.com/suns/blog/james-looks-provide-veteran-leadership-rookie-0

With the college football season approaching soon, anticipation is building in Southeast Texas to see the Lamar Cardinals under new Head Coach Mike Schultz. Schultz, hired December 22nd to replace Ray Woodard, has was kind enough to answer a few questions for us here at BigRedInsider. BigRedInsider: You have mentioned numerous times that the recruiting area was a major draw for this job. Aside from that, what were some of the other factors in making the Head Football Coach at Lamar University a desirable job? Coach Mike Schultz: There are numerous reasons that make Lamar University a desirable spot to be a head coach. In addition to the quality of high school ta…

When I heard that RB James White was coming to town, I thought that we had caught lightning in a bottle. Coach Powell's history with building offensive lines, Lamar has some big OL kids, and James White, look out SLC. Can it get any better for the first year? Then, I read and watched the HUDL highlights for RB Cole Starnes. At 6-2, better than 200lbs, runs 4.4, and doesn't mind sticking his head into trouble, It looks like it just did. He'll be on the field this fall. Coach Cam Clark is the recruiting coordinator, I think that he found a gem here.

RHP Carson Lance 16th round to Detroit C Brendan Arredondo 23rd round to Baltimore RHP Jimmy Johnson 28th round to Arizona OF Reid Russell 33rd round to Houston Lance being a JR, he has the option to pass on the MLB and return for his SR season although if he does that he loses all negotiating leverage if he were to get drafted again next year. I was surprised to see Russell go so low although I was surprised to see him go undrafted last year after he hit .354 with 18 HRs. His numbers were down this year to .317 with 10 HRs. The biggest knock I heard about him last year was his plate discipline. Last year he struck out 63 times to just 19 walks. This se…

Regional play is wrapping up but the big story so far is Sam Houston just took down national seed Texas Tech to advance to the Super Regionals. This is the first time a Southland Conference school has made it past the regionals.

Saw on the LamarCardinals.com site that Price has added a graduate transfer from La Tech for this year. The player is listed as Da'Shawn Robinson, a 6-3 guard who was injured early last year and appears to have gotten a medical redshirt as he played two years at Navarro and one year at Tech prior to last season. Price indicated that he had tried to get him coming out of Juco but Robinson chose Tech instead. The 2017-18 team will have several seniors but still only one who has spent all four years in Beaumont.
